The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Tend to agree. It's certainly not ideal and I'm sure frontier know it, are addressing it. Needle in a huge haystack whether blindly searching the rift, or blindly checking core system local galnets stories. To me, drews hint on the "core" sounds like the latter, plus it fits with a game mechanic thats been in the game for a long time, even if most people aren't aware of it, let alone believe it, e.g. persistent poi, albeit a surface one. (the conda wreck is real, even though many dismissed the Galnet clue as typical frontier fiction not even built in game yet.)
Just my 2c anyway. :)

Yeah ... I've personally visited a Conda wreck based on Morse code from a local news feed.

I've been casually observing this thread, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned.

Are people remembering there are local galnet news items ONLY visible at a system's starport services? e.g. like at Orrere, there's the anaconda wreck coordinates. The Orrere Herald, carrier signal compromised.

That's my bet for we're we'll find real clues. Around "core" systems local galnets. Not just the galaxy galnet ones.

His post was pretty vague, but if you look at the context (what he quoted) people were debating whether it was the rim of the galaxy, spiral arm, a nebula etc.

I suspect that by quoting these and directing people to think about the core of the matter he was trying to steer people back to 'rift', which is obviously none of the above.

I may well be wrong, but I do think we need to look at the context in which hints are offered.

In regards to being able to subscribe to news threads from specific systems, I just got this answer from Frontier's Ian Dingwall:

This is very much on our ‘to-do’ list, but unfortunately it’s quite a long list, so I can’t promise it’ll be implemented any time soon!

Edit: Is there any particular reason for the ablative case in the word Formidine?
I don't quite get it, but that may be because my native language has a limited case system.

I don't think that form is the the ablative here, that wouldn't make any sense. I rather think it's an adjective ending -ine, as in "riverine"= pertaining to rivers. "Formidine" then is "pertaining to formido (=fear)".
There are many adjectives, derived from Latin, in English that end on "ine".
(Most, however, already are adjectives in Latin (asininus, alpinus, ... = asinine, alpine, ...) while there is no "formidinus". But riverine shows that -ine can also be added as a suffix in its own right without a base in Latin.)

Well, it would make sense if it is a quotation, so to speak (see my posts above).

That's possible, but how probable is it that Drew created a new word out of a rather unfamiliar Latin word which no one forced him to use as well?

Not more probable than assuming an ablative IMHO. But yeah, it's a possibility. I am looking forward to finding out (eventually)!

As I approach the H&S travelling under the plane of unscoopables I've not seen a tagged system in hundreds of stars. However I can see someone doing some sterling work filling in the void of the Rift in EDSM - hats off to whoever's doing that

I did a bit of this in my 35ly Conda, until the madness overtook me. I was resolute not to use jumponium and plot only the navigable tendrils and dead ends. Someone was deeper in than me at the same time but was un reachable with my jump range. I was mainly core side edge of the rift H&S side of the RR line.

Have any of the chaps out there found/explored any Asterism's?

They seem to be everywhere in the body of text, even Salome was at it (even on the logo thing). I assume they would have to be pretty prominent and easy to spot though as the stars thin out.

Good thinking here ;)

Turns out there is a quite important asterism involving cassiopeia : the Three Guides.

These are : Beta Cas, Alpha Andro, Gamma Peg and allow to visualize the zero hour circle.

*There might be something to dig here, as Kahina arrives on earth ~20th of march i.e. vernal equinox, not far from Greenwich (zero hour circle for earth).
In astronomy the ref. circle for celestial coordinates is the zero hour one, and it is defined as the one that passes through the point where the Sun crosses
the celestial equator at the vernal equinox. IMO this is quite remarquable.

it'll be good to see some tags, it's been one in hundreds of systems!

I can feel the madness already, it's suitably named. It's very lonely out here and long way to go yet really. I really think that you've got the way it's just where to actually start entry, but I have a theory on that. Will prod it, go mad then share it in case anyone else has luck

I have heard it several times, sometimes with the suggestion that it has been tried and works. However, always in a 3rd hand manner (just like this), someone reliable needs to test it and say Yah or Nah

I am way out in the void and have picked up a few of these, did not think to scan them and see whats what, am on later i will give it as go and let peeps know the result.

Had a thought what if the rift is the Red layer of stars and the RR line points to a specific location within the layer.

So, I don't mean to derail any trains of thought here, but I just finished reading Reclamation and I think there may actually be some ambiguity as to the ownership of the Seven Veils, stemming from these lines in the epilogue of Reclamation:

'Hassan?'
'Told you I'd got a plan.'
'No      ... this your ship? I mean ... you serious? This ...'
'She's quite a sight isn't she? An Imperial Clipper.'
'But how did you afford ...'
'Let's just say somebody owed me a ship.'

Up until now I assumed that the Seven Veils was Kahina's ship, partly because any GalNet article referencing it refers to it as her ship. So, every time she showed up somewhere in GalNet with the Seven Veils, where was Hassan? Was he in her Asp during that period and they traded out when they hit the road, or was he traveling with her, unseen by the media? If so, then what could he have been doing behind the scenes leading up to their departure?

Another video in my Formidine Rift series. Yesterday I hit a major snag: OUT OF FUEL. A death sentence for me because I'm playing under "Iron Man" rules. No insurance screen. I go straight to "clear game save". Thankfully Commander TankYou was willing to cross the expanse of 13,000Ly to come to my rescue ... and it wasn't easy. Crossing the Formidine Rift is not for the faint-hearted! Here's the video:

I should be back tonight. Got about 800-1000 or so systems from in the rift. Not sure where to dump though? Dark Wheel or CoR stations?

The idea of using an SRV to scan data packs is certainly interesting but it does fly in the face of the assertion that you don't need Horizons.

Admittedly there may be a bit of a semantic distinction between:
  • Don't need Horizons to see whatever IT is if you randomly stumble upon it
  • Don't need Horizons to resolve clues as to whatever IT is.

It's absolutely worth following up in terms of information and because it may prove interesting for other mysteries but the above coupled with the fact that FD is changing those things from randomly appearing out to 5KLY or so to much closer to the bubble make me feel it's a dead end with respect to the Rift itself.

That is true, but keep in mind that old Rebecca Weston managed to find the <thing> in a Cobra, either a Mk III, a SuperCobra, or a Cobra Courier. At any rate she did mention needing weapons to make it past the frontier in those days, so she probably wasn't using a stripped-down exploration loadout either. Either way if I remember correctly the numbers discussed earlier in the thread, her max jump range was most likely 24 Ly or less, but possibly 27 Ly. An Imperial Clipper could manage either, but only around 24 Ly if it's equipped for potential combat. I'm still of the opinion that Salomé's Clipper was originally intended to be the ship would take on her trip and the prototype modules were a decoy, butshe had to leave it behind due to whatever happened that required her presence on Capitol.

Then, there won't be many possible paths in the actual Rift. From the exit, I couldn't find 12 systems without a 31ly jump. :|
