The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Yeah, but FD would let someone do CMDR Superman and CMDR Clark Kent too.

And if DC Comics, as the intellectual property owners of those two characters, issued a cease and desists to Frontier Developments my guess is that they would force the players to change their Commander names. The reason why players get away with some of these names that are obviously references to other works of fiction is because it is completely off the radar of the IP holders. In this case we have a player openly flaunting the usage in front of the IP owner (Drew reads this forum). I'd be very surprised if we don't see this 'Kahina' have his/her character renamed very, very soon.

Is that legit? I always thought it was the Old Woman that went to the Rift and saw what she saw...not Kahina/Salomé?

Thanks to Jaiotu for the notification about this one. Whoever has created this avatar is nothing to do with me and will probably be leading you up the garden path. ;) It would appear they haven't even done their homework properly.

Still, imitation and the sincerest form of flattery,etc...

I will investigate. CMDR Salomé is the only one you should be listening to. Kahina is not a 'CMDR', she is a Senator.

Cheers,

Drew.

Thanks Drew.

As much as anything the fake CMDR is saying is probably irrelevant...I WOULD be fairly interested to know who was responsible for the wiping of the Old Woman's mind, if it was indeed any individual at all...Just to fill in one of the blanks in the story as much as anything :)

I presume it was the imperials based on the story

If Drew's 'Oolite Saga' has any bearing on it, I'd guess it was Galcop. There are mentions of Galcop 'hex-editing' people in Status Quo.

This line of dialog, spoken by the president of Galcop, always makes me think of the old lady in Reclamation:

'The Lave authority logs and your homeworld electorate information will be edited appropriately. True, you yourselves will need minor hex-editing, so you can fit in with your new identities, nothing more serious than that. Your memories will be intact, but we respectfully ask you not to speak of certain aspects this incident.'

It's the tenth anniversary of my unofficial Oolite book 'Status Quo' this week on the 19th of May. I have a little bit of fan-fiction planned to mark the occasion.

Cheers,

Drew.

Maybe it was the doctor in the clinic where the Old Lady met Kahina...

Oh nice! Guess this isn't what you teased to be revealed in June though. Hints?

You mean Dr. John Graham? I don't know ... can't help thinking that I've seen his face somewhere before.

I am posting this here so as not to burden Luke's thread with tinfoilery when he posts it.

PDL* Theory #509

I will not go into extreme detail but my search started in the Prism system and it's alleged significance. Prisms led me to Emil Wolf, an optics physicist, who has written a book (published by Cambridge Uni Press) about light (enlightening visit) polarization. Light polarization in astronomy led me to spectral lines (...read between the lines?) and peculiar stars, whose (undescribed) spectral peculiarity is denoted by 3 dots (...). While reading on peculiar stars i came upon a speciffic one named Epsilon Ursae Majoris; Alioth (Alliance shines light on Prism Senator), which happens to be the 31st brightest star in the sky as seen from earth (Ulysses 31? nah...).
And that's as far as i have gone with this theory. What i cannot understand is whether we can use star spectra to get something usefull out of this theory, which, i will be the first to say, seems too far-fetched and plain wrong :)

On a side note, in the "Alliance shines light on Prism Senator", we read : Alliance representatives from Alioth have extended an invitation for her to visit their star-systems with the assurance the her trip will be free from “bungling bureaucracy, petty-minded procrastinators and deranged docking debacles.”. Does anyone else find the quoted phrase and specifically the choice of words used, strange?

" b b, p(-m)p, d d d."

Alioth is one of the seven stars of the Big Dipper. Kahina's Imperial Clipper, the Seven Veils.

The old woman's mind was not completely wiped out, only parts of it, because she remembered and described to Salome her adventures when flying as an Elite pilot, her mind was edited not wiped.
.

"She paused for a moment as memories flooded through her mind."
.
"Ah, it'll all come back to bite them one day, it's all there in the Imperial databanks somewhere - and they thought the Thargoids were trouble ..."
.
Quotes from Elite: Reclamation.

edit: Please tell me if this has been discussed already (I cant be bothered to check through 200 pages)

I'm going to focus on this one sentence.

This is the problem right here.

I'm not having a pop at you specifically, Flash Baggins, it's just that your post happens to highlight a major problem, which is...

If you're wanting to contribute to the thread, please read it in its entirety beforehand - or at least the Original Post (if it has been constantly updated - check the Last Updated bit at the bottom of that post to find out). Otherwise what happens is we get endless repeats of tinfoil, because someone's had a brainwave and posts their wisdom to the thread without realising that said wisdom has already been spouted before and was debated/accepted/rejected.

Again, not a personal pop at you Flash - this is aimed at everyone in general who wants to contribute something towards Solving The Mystery

But I'll be the first one to admit that the forum format is THE WORST for this kind of mystery solving, unless the OP updates with the latest findings on a regular and short gap basis.

But still - read the posts. And little bit of humour/goofery isn't bad either, to lighten the mood a bit ;)

HaHa, fair enough, I did read the entirety of the first post, Drews comments and the google doc spreadsheet, but I dont have the time at the moment to read the entire thread (the cant be bothered was a little bit of goofery as you put it :p) thats why I added it there, as you say I dont want to repeat what has already been done.

I will try and read through some of the tinfoil that is this thread at some time though :)

I doubt even a fleet of Thargoids could prevent that from happening. At least we can try and keep the OP up to date in the next one. (No pop at Acheron - he did a great job. Anyone know what happened to him??)

However your post has proven to me that connections can be found in almost anything if one digs deep enough...

It's seriously time we had a firm lead in all this. Heading back out to the rift again next week. Just getting Cisco tuned up and ready for another tour.
