The game isn't the same anymore.

It will take time, Im not saying it will happen tomorrow.
I believe that the Distant Worlds 3 project are planning to build a chain of colonial locations out from human occupied space towards the Orion molecular complex which includes Barnards Loop. They want to create a launch site for the DW3 in 2026.
So already there is a plan with a large group behind it which are moving in that direction.
If you use the colonisation mode on galmap you can see quite clearly where the hard boundary is;

Love DayZ! I'm at 2k hours but that doesn't count the original mod which I loved too. DayZ is actively developed though and gets regular content releases. They even did a major engine overhaul some years ago. And Skyrim is entirely supported by modding.
Whether a game gets patches or not isn't even my argument. What I'm saying is there's a difference between content and meaningful additions to a game, and knowing the difference is what separates good devs from the rest. Content by itself just means stuff. It doesn't mean good stuff.

Has DayZ ever had these meaningful additions though? For the most part all of their updates are either adding assets (weapons, etc) or new maps. The original Chernarus map is still the best one IMO and that shipped with the game. They did add the contaminated zone feature but that was just... okay.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's the core game itself that has long lasting value for people. For Elite that would the sum of all the core features that the game shipped with. I'm not sure if there's a feature release that FDev can push that'll add the kind of depth you're talking about. I could be totally wrong... in fact I hope I'm wrong.

Not really but I didn't say Dayz specifically had. It's just a game I can play forever. 8k hours deep. o_O

Yup, though I believe Elite has something more than the sum of its parts. Almost certainly a feature release won't add to the depth. Some would like to see more of the old school updates rather than a content roadmap, but this is what we have now. Gotta make the best of it.

It's early days though. FD's experiment last year was a success, and they're repeating it this year. Could be they'll expand the scope of their development when they're in the position to do it. 🤞

Very true.

There are several ships that deserve to remain worthwhile but are likely to be overlooked in favor of SCO-compatible ships.

Honestly, I fully expect FDev to start having ship manufacturers "retrofit" SCO functionality into existing ships... once FDev decide there's no more money to be made from however many new ships they've still got in development.
Its just a shame that FD can't (using the same metrics we always had-i.e. use whats in game) give them mild advantages for being legacy- for example CM3, Sidey, Hauler etc being totally ignored by sec forces using the conspicuousness level.

I don't think FD will make old ships more stable with sco, it's not commercially viable because then it will be harder to sell early access for arx to new ships, which must be better than the old ones to be of interest
SCO baked in is a perk, not the main reason (at least for me) why I'd want to buy something.

For example I'd want to buy the Toucan Terror Corsair not for SCO but because frankly its cool.

Thing is, all the new ships that we've had (so far, at least) are better than existing ships in one way or another, regardless of SCO.
The closest thing to a direct equivalent is probably the Python 2 and it says a lot that it is a viable alternative to the FdL, and a far better choice (IMO) than the Mamba,,, which was intended to be an alternative to the FdL.
The T8 hauls more than a Python, the Mandalay is just flat-out better than the AspX or Phantom in many ways and the CM5 is so far ahead of every other small ship that they can't even see it from where they are.

If FDev carry on creating ships like these, having an SCO-optimised AspX or Krait isn't likely to deter anybody from buying (with Arx) whatever ships FDev decide to release in the future.
About the only thing that might be a bit awkward would be if FDev make the Annie, Cutter and Corvette SCO-compatible without releasing a new large-pad combat ship that has native SCO optimisation first... and creating a new alternative to the Annie/Cutter/Corvette that isn't just stupidly overpowered might be a bit tricky.

I suspect it's an entirely moot point.
I'd bet that a lot of people would still pay for early access to any new ship that arrived, regardless of it's capabilities.
Honestly, if FDev wanted to, I bet they could apply early access to paintjobs, ship-kits and modules and people would pay for them.
People just like having new toys to play with... especially if they're toys not everybody has.

At some point, new SCO-enabled ships will come to an end. That is when most old ships have been superseded with the SCO-capable variant.
Projecting FDev's current release cycle (4 ships/year) it may happen in two to three years from now. What then? Create the next unique feature and release another generation of ships? Possible, although I hope that they won't go that route because this is will upset players sooner or later. I wonder what FDev will do with the bugged Anaconda and its impossible jump range - Annie2 but with realistic specs and therefore a lower jump range? :)

Something someone posted a while ago: if you start rolling the ship before engaging SCO, it's more stable. I think it works, I've been trying to decide and I think there's a small benefit.
I may try this if its not just like the old Everquest jest about sacrificing a Ranger for better loot! :ROFLMAO:

I'm going to try this tonight. I'm flying my Cutter with a SCO engineered w/MM delivering CMM and other construction goods. Its great once I learned to fly it in SCO but less jittering would be great.
Regarding the old ships being less desirable, it happens everywhere. When new cars come out, the old ones are dependent on enhancements or detailed maintenance to keep up. Happens with aircraft, motorcycles, etc etc etc. Its the way it is. I really like my C-MkV and my Mandalay but the Cobra is an upgrade plus slightly enlarged.

My only wish, is the game was more sim like, over the years it's become very easy and safe. Even the drop out range at stations has been reduced to being practically on top of the station

Using the ground and station to ram into to stop just doesn't seem right, no damage to land gear or an engine ever.
