ISTR FD said it was basically impossible without re-writing the Stellar Forge and resetting the galaxy. Manual patching to "smooth out the edges" might be feasible but impractical as it would add or move millions of stars.
I treat it as part of the lore now, or at least my head-lore. The
ED galaxy is already a weird place with ancient warring aliens and moons that defy their Roche limit and worlds that are pretty much barren except for a scattering of plant-like lifeforms that share similar characteristics from one end of the galaxy to the other. And then there's Mitterand Hollow...
Clearly there's been some seriously impressive astroengineering and genetic seeding in the galaxy's history, and it might still be going on. So I just treat the star cubes as part of the same mystery. I like the idea that some sort of industrial accident or act of war might have occurred billennia ago that somehow carved massive straight-edged chunks of stars out of the sky. It seems fitting for this galaxy, and lends an air of awe and even a bit of fear when exploring those parts of it.
