I was an inch from the uninstall button when I found this guide. Now I've just bought my Cobra and am outfitting for long-range exploration. This guide really should be stickied, methinks.

Thanks so much.
This is germane to the ED experience as a whole.

STICKY REQUEST - please acknowledge.

Excellent guide. I have found it very helpful. Wish I had read it before I started the game but oh well, I really never was good on RTFM.

Firstly: Bump!
Secondly: Sticky, please, mods!

Excellent guide, well worth the Rep+.

Just one little trick for the explorers out there.

Fuel weighs a lot! I am out exploring in a reasonably kitted Asp, and have noticed that I have never gone below half full due to my habit of scooping from every star that I can. As I have a decent scoop, I really don't need the capacity the Asp comes with, so as I am on my way back, I intend to swap out the standard max capacity tank that every ship comes with for one half the size. This means I will be carrying half as much fuel, and my jump range will go up accordingly. I just have to make sure that the new tank is big enough to let me do a minimum of 4 jumps without scooping and ensure that I always turn back if I hit my second system in a row where I can't. Providing I can do that, and I shouldn't have a problem, then I can save quite a bit of weight which might go towards improving other systems or just increasing range. [Edit]: Standard Asp tank is 32 tonnes, so by going to one half that capacity, I remove 16 Tonnes weight from my ship, making my thrusters more capable and increasing my jump range. If I can remove enough weight from my ship, I may be able to down-grade my thrusters, saving even more weight and increasing my jump range even further. Longer jump ranges mean less jumps to get back and saving major time selling data. [/Edit]
.
If I find the next time I am out in the black that I am still not going below half capacity, then I may consider trading down again when I go back to sell the data again. And due to the minimal chance of finding anyone out there, I have dropped weapons and shields, and I don't use heat sink launchers. The way I avoid getting fried by being distracted during a jump is I set the throttle to zero once the countdown has started. You drop to minimum FSD speed - 30KPS - as soon as you exit the jump. You can sit there until you get the "Found Astronomical Object" message comes up, target the sun and perform a surface scan whilst my ADS is finding out if there is anything else in the system, angle away on course for your next target to scoop and increase to max speed to get there. Make sure you don't hyperspace away straight away, give yourself time to let your heat drop to a decently low base level.
.
OK, I'll need to re-outfit if I wanted to change to hunting or go back to trading, but my current plan is to explore until I get to Elite rank, then buy a much better ship with the proceeds, go back to trading until I get to Elite in that, then outfit for hunting and start taking my combat rank from "Harmless" to however high I can go.

Hope this helps someone.

Yes, replacing my fuel tank did work.
.
All told, I sold both my mining lasers, refinery, and cargo racks, was able to go for a lighter power distributor and a half-capacity fuel tank, added a docking computer and increased my fuel scoop from 294.00/s to 343.00/s . Overall gain was around 3LY increase to jump range, resulting in a 10 minute saving on travel time to where I am exploring, about 1,600LY from Sol, and a reduction in heat of about 5% at the point where my tank is full so I can hit hyperspace that bit faster.
.
Fuel usage is around 1/3rd of a tank now whilst travelling to the site and back, so can't reduce it further, but will have plenty of spare capacity once I start exploring systems again as my jumps will go down from around 31-32LY to an average of less than 10LY.
.
And amazed that the best fuel scoop available for an Asp is the A/6 model, capable of 0.88T/s but costing a whopping 28,763,610. That's a whole lot of fuel you'd need to not buy to pay for that beauty! But of course, faster scooping means less heat generated and less chance of heat damage, plus the ability to hit hyperspace faster.
