It's a good guide, but I have just a couple of criticisms ... hope you don't mind? ;)

You might need to update it a bit for the recent update to the game. I noticed that the Galaxy route planner bit says it the route planner limit is 100LY, this is out of date .., I think the limit is 1000LY, but I'm not sure. I certainly have plotted route of several hundred without issue.

I'm not sure you guide helps people with you referencing which key to push.
Not everyone will have the same key bindings, as you mentioned.
I suggest you talk in terms of "pitch up/down" and "thrust up/down" etc. The guide then works for everyone regardless of control system.
I don't disagree with your suggested keyboard and mouse setting, they seem to make more sense than the defaults.

On the whole it's a daunting task trying to put all the advice a beginner needs in one document, while not overdoing it.

So good job in general

:)

Just be advised that last edit was done a year and a half ago. There's a lot of a new stuff going on. :)
As a basic guide it's still nice, of course.

Techno this is the best guide i have read! It Frontier should have it as their main guide for beginners

Thank you for taking the time to write this...it has Really helped me out

A good read for a newbie that. The mouse and key bindings work very well - much better than my old piece of      Logitech stick. Waiting for the postman with a Warthog though... :)

Haven't read through the whole of post #1 but would be cautious in taking everything on board as the guide was last updated in May 2015 which was version 1.2.07 and before Powerplay.
I would agree with most of the keybindings though.

Personally I have:
Mouse: Pitch & Yaw.
Mouse wheel up/down: Throttle Up/Down
Mouse side thumb buttons first/second: Thrust forward/backward
Q/E: Roll Left/Right
W/S: Thrust Up/Down
A/D: Thrust Left/Right

Throttle increment: 12.5%

Tab: Boost (default) although another said he found Spacebar better as he could use the left thumb for that.
Z: Flight Assist (default)
X: Throttle to zero (default)
C: Chaff
V: Heatsink (default)
B: Shield Cell Bank
/: Throttle to 100% (/ is the key left of <right shift>)
.: Throttle to 75% (. is the key left of /)

Having thrust (not throttle) on the mouse side buttons is particularly helpful in speedy manual docking as once you are hovering over the landing pad and are at 0% throttle you have access to the thrust controls with both sets of your fingers.

thanks harmless

I have been attempting to play ED for a few days so am an absolute novice beginner. I will follow your suggestions but the first thing I read was not to get stressed doing the tutorials which I was doing and ripping my hair out. I just could not find a way to land on that space station in the docking tutorial and was so frustrated I requested a refund from Steam which they denied because I had spent 7 hours on the game. I will take my time now to familiarize myself with handling the game but I only have a gaming keyboard and mouse, not being able to justify the expense of a suitable joystick.

Back in the game after a couple of years away, and this post was so useful for getting back up to speed! Thanks again Michael - live long and prosper :)
