I just got interdicted by an honorable pirate

Since the very beginning of my journey, I’ve always played in Open Play. It seems that doing so makes things a lot more interesting, since you can never know what to expect or who you will be interacting with. Everything looks and feels a bit more dangerous that way.
Despite this, I can count as very few the encounters I’ve had with human commanders.

Today I was en route on my current trade route with my recently acquired and quite decently outfitted Type-7 when, all of a sudden, I got interdicted.

When the interdiction warning sounded at the cockpit, I had my attention somewhere else (you know, trading can be a repetitive task and is difficult not to get distracted from time to time), so my reaction was a bit late and I could not regain the advantage that my interdictor had already taken.

So of we went from super cruise and I said: “well, let’s see what we’ve got”. At the scanner showed up a Cobra MK3: ”CMDR …”

OK –I said to myself - it is not a dull NPC ship, things start getting interesting…

I thought of running, but decided to ask the pilot about his intentions when I got a message:

“Cargo please”

“6”

Those were good news.

“OK” – I said, I can afford 6 tons, I’m carrying 216.

“There you go”

I thought it was fair enough. I took a deep breath and jettisoned 6 Beryllium Tons. Then received a couple more coms:

“Thanks”

“Safe flight”

“Same” was my response. I engaged the frame shift drive and got the heel out of there.

Thinking about the encounter, everything happened in a very natural and IMO realistic way. The pirate wanted his loot, and I wanted to make it in one peace. Both got what we wanted while being respectful and cordial to each other.

To be honest, for a trader earning +5 million per day, that was like a mosquito bite in economic terms, but the pirate got more than 45.000 creds without firing a single weapon. A good business I’ll say.

Although I’ve written down the name of the commander, I doubt I’ll be taking violent actions against him in the future, since I firmly believe that people like him make this game a better and more interesting one. If we were all traders, this will turn out boring at the end.

I wish the best for this commander, but hope not to find him in a near future.

Safe flights.

Out.

Thinking I may try some CMDR piracy soon.

More for fun and to say I've done it than anything else. Won't be asking for much, hopefully my victims will take pity on me.

Edit: Planned loadout

Smart pirate, if you destroy the ship the trader may find another route, getting his share and leaving the trader to fly another day is the smartest move.

No! You should have self-destructed!

Joking aside, there are nice pirates and nasty pirates. I like to think I'm nice, though one target today told me I was known as Baby-Eating Tigga, and was suprised that I did a cargo scan and left him go as he had nothing. He said Reddit was to blame.

In my book, I think you're probably fairly safe assume they're nice if they don't go in guns blazing. Some nice pirates like to bargin from a shields-down position, but I kinda think the ones who are willing to do nothing to you until you actively try to escape are most likely to be nice. If I put disruptive mass on somebody I often won't shoot until they charge their FSD, for example. I also don't shoot until my scan is complete. Exceptions exist, of course, if people go silent running/chaff my scan/drop heat sinks, as all block my scans, so it's not really possible to get the scan in first.

I actually was a hero pirate today. Noticed a not-nice pirate in my sector prowling about, he interdiced an adder right by the station (and right by me), I was in the wake in seconds, and managed to kill the nasty pirate who, according to the adder, was about to shoot him for his 0 cargo (nasty pirate had no cargo scanner - often a bad sign!). Was really rather fun, and the adder quickly caught on and fired a bunch of homing missiles to trash the nasty pirate's unshielded hull after I took his shields down.

These sort of posts almost make me want to try open. Then I think of the suicide sideys...

Never seen one. :)

In my Type 6, I was interdicted by an Asp at a rare trade hub system the other day. We played cat and mouse for a bit in supercruise, but he eventually got a tether onto me. I submitted to avoid damage, then ran like hell from him. I refrained from spooling up FSD right away, though - that "drop-and-spool" hole in the interdiction mechanic will be closed soon enough, so I might as well get used to the longer exposure in normal flight.

Anyway, I ran like hell, with a hold full of three different types of rare goods. With my FSD spooling now, albeit slowly, I switched on my PDT, chaffed myself silly, dropped heatsinks, boosted, corkscrewed... the works.

He chased me, trying to wear me down with railgun fire, beams and the odd missile (presumably for the intimidation factor of the big red INCOMING MISSILE message). It was epic. I ended up jumping back to SC with 25% hull. Dropped out again instantly to avoid a follow-on tether, plotted a hyperspace course somewhere quiet for repairs...

...and came back 5 minutes later to try that run again. :)

After making it safely to the station the second time, I undocked, then went local supercruise to chat. Spotted my interdictor, and hailed him.

We had a very nice chat, where he noted I had a lot of anti-pirate defences, and that it was huge fun trying to pirate me. I complimented him on the awesome chase - he very nearly had me! :D

Out of all the day's play, that one sequence of frenzied activity was by far the most memorable, and the most fun.

I can't wait to be challenged by that player again, in another game of cat and mouse.

As a newbie Bounty Hunter, I would attempt to interdict a Wanted CMDR if one of the following were true:
1: The bounty was over 5k, or
2: The CMDR wandered into ideal interdiction range/vector (as happened last night with an NPC) while I was traveling.

I would talk to the target before shooting though, they could be a fellow Bounty Hunter who got a little careless. I wouldn't kill for that.

When I'm brave (and armed) enough, I plan to head to the Alliance systems and watch for pirates interdicting players, and follow them into the wake. The pirates should be around long enough due to cargo scooping, and may end up in an unfortunate 2 on 1.

No doubt some of the traders would prefer the seamless transaction...

Do NPC's actually scoop cargo, or just demand it and stop shooting if you drop it then wait for you to go away?

I did this very thing earlier. Saw a pirate cobra pull out a type 6. Went into the wake, and see him shooting at the type 6 ( which I couldn't see at all, due to island issues or whatnot). Anyways, I saw some floating rares, and decided I wanted them. So I shoot my beam lasers for a few seconds in front of his windshield ( didn't hit him, just a warning shot). Anyways, since I'm in an asp he didn't want to mess around and bugged out. Was pretty fun, but couldn't even scoop anything because a cop showed up ( which is strange since it was an anarchy), and I wasn't risking a huge fine since I had plenty of illegal cargo on board.

Any who, I feel like dropping into wakes should be faster, I was pretty close to that one and it was already pretty much over when I dropped in. Maybe even some sort of notification on radar/info panel that a hostile interdiction was taking place nearby, that would really help others get to it quicker.

Are you still streaming Mr. Tigga?
