The Limit Theory Thread

Had a look but couldn't find a Limit Theory thread so here goes.

Latest update video can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrFoesWWT30&hd=1

I have to say this one is surpassing my Kickstarter expectations so far. The monthly video updates are starting to look really good and for a one man show the game looks like it's going to be really good.

Edit: Here's the original Kickstarter link https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/joshparnell/limit-theory-an-infinite-procedural-space-game

And for good measure the LT web-site http://ltheory.com/

I think once he completes this he could get any job with any games company he wants. Josh has impressed a lot of people.

I can't help thinking he might get a taste for being his own boss.

But yeah - with what looks like being a success like this under his belt he probably walk into any games company.

Great to see someone doing something they obviously love and making it work.

ETA - @ OP - must check that latest video out - have seen the others so far..

Have to say I am blown away by LT and what Josh has done - really does make me question my loyalties.

If I was him I wouldn't bother - partner up perhaps, seek investments to found your own games company perhaps, but once you have had a taste of being the boss there's no turning back.

I 2nd that - love being my own boss :)

I'm really looking forward to lt.
Frontier should take note of the way Josh keeps his backers updated with daily devlogs and monthly progress videos that actually show progress.

I'm a bit disillusioned with the way frontier handles the updates.

I've let the Limit Theory forum know about this thread. Josh will be pleased I think to see his game being discussed here. :)

Thank you Geraldine for letting the Limit Theory forums know. I am sure Josh will be pleased. Many of us have a foot in both camps, including Josh. :)

We've actually been getting plenty of updates in the form of newsletters, videos and the very detailed DDF archive proposals and discussions.

Updates for ED and LT are actually pretty good. I don't think one can compare updates for one with the other. ED has teams working to fine tune the parts of the game; LT uses procedural generation to flesh out almost all the game so it is understandable how the approaches for updates are different yet I am happy with the amount of updates I've been getting for both. :)

I don't think you can back LT at the moment as I don't think Josh set up a paypal payment system. It's due out in January 2014 but I'm not sure how he's planning to distribute it yet but you may have to wait until then.

One of the main reasons I backed it was because of Josh himself. Comes across as one of lifes good guys and is working damn hard to make LT a great experience. It also reminds me of the way the original Elite was programmed for some reason. Someone making a game that they want to play and that they think others would as well.

Can this game still be backed or is it closed now?
Like Verne mentioned, he's not taking any more pledges (even after multiple forum threads and requests for him to open up some form of pledging system). Just hang around the forums (just one more forum to register to! ;)), you're more than welcome to contribute ideas towards the game or discuss how a certain feature in the game should be. Josh frequently scours the forums for ideas to a problem he's facing so your idea/suggestion could make it into the game in one form or another. :D

I've got money in all three of the upcoming Space games (Elite, SC and LT). Obviously Elite is the game that started it all, and my interest in wide open procedural generated 'worlds', but i'm secretly rooting for LT to maybe, just maybe, be the best of the bunch.

Now this is entirely from the perspective of wanting a pure SP Elite-like game experience over anything else, and so far only LT has focused on SP exclusively.

Elite has the history and pedigree, SC has the bling, but i tend to root for under dogs and it is frankly incredible what one-man-band Josh has so far done in LT. He can't obsess over graphics (which is a 'good thing' for his overall game design) but has them looking certainly better than i need to invest in his 'world', and is shifting most of his effort on game elements and game play aspects that always sound like a good call. I think he really gets it and has a clear strong vision for LT, and that is boding well for the game imho.

Until all the games our in our hands i guess we will just have to wait and see which we prefer?

I can assure you that all suggestions are carefully considered by Josh. I am part of his Elder Council and have regular contact with him. He still surprises us with the ideas he comes up with and the speed with which he implements these ideas. His core vision for his game is very strong.

I am in a similar position to you Zak. I pledged for all three of the games you mentioned (and a few you didn't). It was Elite Dangerous that introduced me to Limit Theory and I couldn't help but be impressed by Mr Parnell and his "little game". I saw in LT what I have wanted for many years. A natural successor to Freelancer but with so much more depth of game play. Like you, I much prefer SP games as I am from the generation that grew up without having access to on-line gaming. I have been frequently disappointed with the notion that a game can only be truly awesome if it is multi-player. I have little doubt that Josh and Andy will deliver my dream game. They are a very talented team.

Don't get me wrong, I am still excited about ED and SC. They are shaping up to be a terrific experience for anyone who loves the space sim genre. You couldn't fail to be impressed by the progress being shown by the development teams on both projects.

@TanC Glad to see you posting here.

I backed ED first then I was pointed in the direction of LT by someone on the ED kickstarter. I had a look at SC but at the time i had invested rather more than planned into ED . What little funds I had left went into backing Godus and LT. I have to say SC looks really impressive but overall I don't think it's for me (and I don't think I'm going to have time to play another game as I intend to spend a lot of time playing ED and LT!)

How wise you are Philip and such self control. I've heard of backers offering their children for sale just to have the funds available for another KS project or to enable their move to a higher pledge tier. :)

I frequently wish I had never heard of Star Citizen. (just kidding) It is a beautiful looking game and includes many features I find very attractive BUT if you lack self control you are an easy target for the marketing sorcery practiced by CIG. I think many of us have pledged far more than we intended to these projects.

I am more fortunate than most. I have the time available to play these games but I agree that backers of several projects will need to make tough decisions about which games they will play. None of the three space sims (ED, LT and SC) are casual games. They will be voracious in devouring your free time. You will spend long hours in their company. Phrases like, "just another ten minutes" and "finish this mission, then sleep" will be common again all over the planet.

I am already anticipating the updated Limit Theory Prototype from Josh. :D
