The Limit Theory Thread

Glad you think so Geraldine.:) Josh tries to keep the FAQ up to date but it does tend to be missed by many who visit the site.

That was a pretty impressive update as usual from Josh, and i'm very happy the guys at FD are keeping an eye on it's progress (Mike Evens etc), that gives me faith they are NOT afraid of competition and just as open minded and excited by the recent resurgence in space sim interest :)

As for the Gates issue, i think it is a neat and believable solution to getting super speed in system, but i always have this nagging question in the back of my mind when i see it as currently implemented in Limit Theory,

'Where is the protection of these gates? Where are the police/drones/weapon system built on the gates etc?'

I would imagine that these would be a huge target for Pirates and enemies of a govenment/system, so they really need some kind of protection in place to make them really fit into the game world more acceptably imho.

Also would/should every system have them? Again coming back to there general usage and how that makes them seem believable in the game world. Surely some systems would be too poor/under-developed to have them? maybe they should just be in place in core systems and rich trading zones?

So those kind of issues bug me the most in relation to them as a technology in the game.

At the moment Zak the "Gates" are just a poor imitation of what they will be in the finished game. If you only knew the number of times I have brought this to Josh's attention through the Council. There is still a lot to be decided but I can assure you that they will be impressive in the finished game

You imagine correctly.

Working on it. You won't be surprised that Josh has some ideas not dissimilar to those you have outlined.

I now have confirmation from Josh that the following was meant to form part of his video update but was unfortunately omitted. His actual words are:

"They (the "gated lanes") will be present only in relatively populated systems. Outskirt / frontier / unpopulated systems will have fewer to none, depending on wealth in the system. I'm in agreement with others that it would be immersion-breaking to have them everywhere!"

He went on to say, "I have three requirements: 1) (They) allow significantly faster travel than normal ship drives (even cruise) 2) (They are) available only between certain destinations, not everywhere, and 3) (They) can be disabled for nefarious purposes (lane hacking)"

I hope that helps. :)

@ Verne, awesome. I know Josh is fully switched on to most respects of Limit Theory and it's potential (but not planet side flying around sadly, as demoed in that video he put up, even as an expansion that would be awesome (more money etc), but i understand he has limits set for the project ;) ).

And i don't hang out at the forums too much, to keep it as 'new' and 'fresh' for me as possible. As a backer of all three space sims (ED, SC and LT), going on what i hear for each one, i'm most excited about LT, as it has nailed it's cross to the SP game experience and mass procedural usage (so endless playing potential) and reasonable system requirements. And it looks amazing for a one man (99% of it) effort!

Ah, I was just going from the Kickstarter although I had suspicions there would be slippage because of the amount of stuff that Josh has been packing into the game! Quite happy to wait for this one, it looks like a real gem.

Obviously Josh has to remain aware of the promises made to backers. He is conscious of the many demands which are being made but he has the capacity to stay focused while he absorbs what he needs from the multitude of sources which are inputing relevant ideas and suggestions. Keep in mind that although LT will be a game Josh will enjoy playing, it is LT2 which will be the game he makes for himself. There will be no KS for that project.

At times I wish I had that luxury Zak. You are probably aware that I share your views on true single player games. I too have backed the triumvirate of awesome space games so we also share that in common. It is hard to know where Josh will draw the line for LT. It has already exceeded his own expectations by a fair margin. Mine too!:D

So, long as it's available at all. I'm quite happy with that.

Will it go to retail or just be digital download?

Josh doesn't have the facilities to do a physical version of the game except for those who are entitked to such rewards for backing at the appropriate level on the KS.

Short answer, just digital download.:)

Indeed! My expectations so far, considering this is a 'new guys' solo effort have been blown, it's looking incredibly professional and deep so far.

I think the biggest challange will be up ahead when trying to meld/cook an overall experience that feels like you are part of a living/breathing universe, without suffering the usual PG issue (Daggerfall/Elite Frontier+FFE etc) of having too an 'impersonal' environment or one that feels very 'samey' over a few replays. If Josh can crucify (for lack of a better image) that issue of PG, then he will be onto a complete winner.

I think it had been suggested to him that he look into using some of the digital delivery services to help him not have to worry about all the logistics, like GoG (my personal favourite), Desura, Steam etc. So yeah, for those that missed the Kickstarter, it should not be a problem getting a copy via digital when that time comes.

I just watched his latest video - PG tech trees.

Stunning ... Really liking the direction he's taking - loving what he's done (data editor - wow ) - kicking myself for not backing ... will deffo pick this up next year as ED will be my "at home" game and maybe LT when I am on the move :)
