The Limit Theory Thread

Sums it up at the moment

Indeed - I still am hopeful that JP can pull something out the bag as from the development videos he released I have to say his approach was the most technical / best looking of them all - easily outclassed SC / ED / NMS and was only 1 man

Ah well .. we shall see :)

LT did (does!) look great, and the most interesting of the current crop from a single player perspective, but it always felt from the videos it was a tech, scripting and graphics demo looking for a game. And as we've now seen with both Elite and NMS, getting a game in there that matches the visuals or concept with content, seems to be problematic with this generation of space games?

Still - really hope it sees the light of day sometime. :)

I've resigned to try to forget about LT. When I watch the old videos...they get me to play Discovery Freelancer for an hour or two (just long enough for me to tell my old factions I'm coming back) then realizing that Freelancer just feels so outdated, I move on....again.

Yeah, it's a year now since the last actual update heralding the brave new golden era. Sigh. The last I heard were just excuses about moving into a new place alone for the first time and helping his girlfriend move to California. Both of them CAN'T be very good for someone in a fragile state. The whole thing is really sad, I really can't think of a similar case to this that ended WELL.

I thought about Josh earlier when babbling on the SC thread and checked into the Limit Theory forums... not a pretty sight. I can imagine that just reinforces the isolation. It all makes me pretty uncomfortable, really. Probably time to move on. If he makes it work, it'll be a terrific triumph of the human spirit story. Sadly, those tend to be rare.

As far as I was able to follow Josh stopped using the forums after he returned from his illness and was, I think, using a facebook group? Anyway - there were regular missives that were outside of the LT forums, because he needed to keep away from the toxic side of things. Which I can quite understand!

I haven't checked for months so don't know about the current state of affairs. I'll get the game when its released I suppose.

So, using the state of the forums as an indicator of current progress/non-progress isn't going to be that useful if he isn't using them anymore.

There is no real news on LT at all. Such a shame, it had a lot of really interesting features and promised so much. Maybe one day it will see the light of day but this one is definitely in the marathon category. Can't see anything coming out this year but I would be very happy to be proved wrong.

Long read but illuminating. He reveals more that leads to confirm my early suspicion that this project was too big for a new developer (mainly why I didn't back 3? years ago and just follow). Certainly well educated and intelligent but, based in my experience managing workflows for development teams, not conditioned for or experienced with the rigors of a large project. He needs a mentor at this point in his mastery but, naturally, that isn't something a lone dev with a KS project is going to have.

I really appreciate the effort he has put into trying some challenging paths and accepting their failures. He is learning a lot and this is very good. I don't expect anything any time soon though. While it seems as he has only a couple big rocks to move out of the way it is almost inevitable, especially since he lacks an architect who can foresee how certain design decisions will play out, that he is going to run into another showstopper. There will be more trial and error, yet, with LT development but as long as he keeps moving forward I don't see why this game won't at least make it to a beta release. Getting to that point should provide him with the ability to sell early access and refill the coffers for the push to final release.

LT, it seems, is not done yet and I'm happy to get to follow Josh's progress again.

He has no teams to manage - it's just him.

I think he has a friend doing the music, and some graphics assets, but that's basically it.

I agree with you though that the job was basically too big for him. I am a backer though, and happy to let him continue on trying to solve the Fundamental Problem of Limit Theory.

As a developer myself (especially as one with mental health issues to deal with), I empathise a lot with the problems he's facing. I just hope he can resolve them before the money runs out, because he's lost a lot of goodwill in the community with his silences. :(

Looks like there's some activity on their forum again, and dev showed up with some info.
Wonder what happened to him, and what are those 'dark days' he's constantly referring to. Was he just tired of this project, or he had some real issues.

He's been suffering with mental health issues since 2014. The "dark days" he's referring to is the time of his breakdown, when he completely vanished from sight after being really visible for such a long time.

I wish the guy well.

Good to finally hear some news from Josh again.

I've been following the game game since kickstarter and I have nothing but good will and sympathy for him.

His post was an interesting read - but again, like a lot of the previous blogs, he seems very focused on 'optimum technology', rather than 'actual game'.

That said, I really wish Josh, and the Limit Theory project all the best.

He definitely seems focused on optimization for the time being. However, his reasoning to optimize, being a lone developer, isn't the best reason I've ever seen. It is a valid reason, sure, but for a project with as big of a scope as LT, the code-base, in my opinion, will not remain an easily manageable size. I hope he strikes a balance, though.

...I wish the guy well...

Ditto - I've struggled with depression and it's not at all easy - so I sincerely wish Josh the very best, and if I was at his elbow I would simply remind him that it's just a game, whereas his life is his life.

Hugs to one and all.

How many games stall for years because the developer can't decide on a programming language? It's very strange.

EDIT: That sounded a bit callous under the circumstances. I just think he'd be better off noodling around with the game without the pressure of a community leaning on him. Officially cancel it, but with the hope of resurrecting it at a future date.
