The Majority of Players, Play Elite as a Single-Player Non-PvP Experience?

EDIT:
A new poll seems to answer the question many here have asked.

Yes, it seems if there was more / better multiplayer content, then more people would play multiplayer.

First up this isn't about solo vs open, so don't even go there. :D This is about how people play regardless of mode.

Here's an interesting stat. Naturally it's from YouTube, so comes with all the usual conditions (non scientific etc).

30k votes so far, representing a sizeable chunk of players.

Now, I'm known for being a solitarily exploration player - some of my video content is aimed at that. You would be excused then for assuming that my viewers are naturally similar. So, to balance out the audience, here's a question from Exigeous a very social player who is PvP focused.

And finally, another question from Exigeous about PvP.

I prefer playing alone most of the time. But that's just me, i never warmed up with big communities and responsibilities being somewhere at a defined time.

Nevertheless if I visit the bubble I enjoy other CMDRs company.

Edit: And my "Mostly Harmless" combat rank on my 7+ years main should answer the "Murder a commander" question :)

I'm not surprised to be honest. I wonder how much this actually indicates people's preferences, and how much of it is a direct consequence of the multiplayer in Elite just not being very good. How many of these people who prefer to play alone would say "no" to a focus on improved multiplayer?

I prefer to play with someone, but rarely do. I've hooked up with Morlock and his friend Raven, so maybe I'll do a bit more. With the surface installation frame rate issues that I have, it will be somewhat painful until they fix it.

It doesn't surprise me either. Most of my playtime is playing alone, but the best times I've had in E: D are multiplayer. And that's usually after an hour or so fighting with the instancing so that we can all see each other.

Playing this game with friends brings it up to a whole new level, when it works. And that will be even more the case with the Odyssey additions (others driving your SRV, etc.). Instancing still needs a lot of work, though.

Quite simply, if ED hadn't initially been marketed as having solo off-line play, I'd never have backed it, as I had no interest in playing ED in multiplayer. Elite for me was always about one lone pilot struggling in the galaxy - not something that to me at least encouraged group play. I had other games for getting my MMO fix.

Now, I mostly play ED in solo mode, I do occasionally take part in group activities but the majority of my time in ED, I just want to be alone and chill out / not have to worry about other players.

I've played in PGs in the past with people I know, which was a lot of fun by the way, but most of my 4000 hours were in solo.
I'm not surprised either though, ED doesn't realy offer that much for multiplayer imho besides lollygagging.

Yes. It shows that FDEV is out of touch, who could have guessed?

Releasing a new DLC after years of us waiting, only to have it be a little slice of First Person Shooter and hardly anything for exploration, or trading, or mining, or, you know, all the things most of us like to do? More stuff for solo players, maybe?

Meh. I'm not holding my breath. Even what they have released is broken so badly...sigh.

Even if the networking side of things was super duper stable with instancing, I would still very rarely engage in multi player activities. As others have said, I was a backer on the premise of having a full solo experience. I just don't enjoy social aspects of gaming, and Elite Dangerous is no different.

Yeah not surprised am playing the game pretty much like that myself.

EDO has made this even worse - can take days before I bump into another player, since I spend a lot more time in a single system, which usually isn't a player hotspot. At times I wonder why I still bother with selecting Open...

I'm curious as to how this preference of being alone most of the time also stems from the fact that finding another player, instancing with them, interacting with them (whatever form that takes, pew-pew, trading, socializing etc.) from a matchmaking standpoint is an ordeal because of the fact that the game still uses P2P and thus is difficult to instance with another player properly, friends specifically.

In other words did people develop this preference as a form of acceptance of the fact this game doesn't connect two or more players very well.

PS. Also ironic considering this is supposed to be "An MMO"

Solo: 90% of the time;
Mobius or with friend/friends group: 10%

Logged into Open about 10 times since I started back in 20...13? Only ever as a mistake - quickly log out then into correct player group or solo.

Regardless of the scientific validity of a YT poll, the results are still interesting nonetheless. Thanks for posting @Obsidian Ant, keep the videos coming!

I can probably count the times I've been in PGs in Elite Dangerous on my fingers (both hands), the times I've been in Open on the fingers of one hand (and most of those were by mistake).

I'm just not into social gaming much. The kind of games I like to play most are the immersive, role-playing, story driven types, and I generally find the addition of other human players in those types of games lessens my enjoyment of them.

I play ED because I played both the original and F:E2 absolutely to death, and I play ED mostly the same way I played them - as a single pilot against the galaxy. I do interact and identify with ED communities, like Canonn, but by external means rather than in game.
