The mapping gold rush in 3.3

I didn't know that the Codex will be populated by "First mapped by" tags though. Well, it makes sense, but is unfortunate. Personally, in my opinion adding a "first mapped by" tag was a mistake, but Frontier have said that it's deliberately so that new players can get to tag stuff again, even within the bubble. Meaning it wasn't an unintended mistake, it's by design.

The "first mapped" tags will only apply to stellar objects mapped using the new probes as far as I am aware, this is a new category, the old tagged names will still be present so this will in no way replace those, so first tagged will still exist, people who used their DSS on planets and moons will still have their name on the bodies, but the "first mapped" bodies with locations will be added. It's maybe not ideal, but it was always going to happen considering that ED is very much a game in development. And just imagine when atmospheric bodies finally get added, we will have a whole new raft of things to put our names to. Someone did suggest we should also have a "first landed" tag as well as a "first mapped" and that's not as silly as it sounds at first, I mean who doesn't want their name listed as the first person to land on the "planet of death" or the landable body with the highest gravity ever found.

If this was a game developed following traditional processes we would all be let free into a pristine galaxy with the opportunity to put our names on lots of different things in many ways, but then we would still be waiting for it to come out of alpha like another game that I shan't mention here!

Because they chose to release it this way there are always going to be issues like this, it's inevitable and getting upset about it isn't going to stop them now or in the future when similar issues crop up.

As for my answer to the OP's question, I plan on hovering around my home space. Despite being in the Federation/Empire border region, it's a pretty quiet area of the bubble (most systems have "0-5 ships" on INARA, and usually fewer than 5 ships in the Traffic Reports) and there's plenty of small Unexplored-but-inhabited systems about, so I'm hoping to bag at least a few of those spots.

Actually, it turns out I'm going to be interstate when the update drops; I can watch the drama unfold on the forums but won't get to fire any probes until a few days afterwards. I suspect all "the good ones" nearby will be snaffled up by then... :(

Beagle Point and Sag A* and others like that will be camped with people who have played with the Beta, be there the first moment the new update comes around and it'll be a scramble to get the scanning firsts, not to mention all the other big areas around the galaxy before having to rush back to civilization and be the first to cash it in.

Big thing is I've realized, is I think so many of hard core explorers, don't even read the names of the people who have discovered things as it is. I now just see a yellow text and know it's not worth much for me to go on from there. I am pretty sure my 10's of thousands of first discovered systems and planets and black holes and Wolf Rayet's, etc get unnoticed by everyone passing through the same way I do.

So instead, since I'm out here already in an area with a lot of black undiscovered areas, I'll just focus on learning the new system and then eventually learn the scanning part down the road. After all, there's so many undiscovered systems still, and that means a plethora of scanning for years to come to get your name on things...

I seriously considered taking out a lightweight armed Corvette out there to Beagle to spawn-camp and kill all those not-real-Explorers (;)) for delicious salt,
but then I remembered I'm a good guy :D

Anyone camping Sag A would be wasting their time as its a black hole system with no planets, so there is nothing to probe at all there! LOL

I imagine that would be kind of fun though...

And that's a good point then (you can tell it's been ages since I've been there). I assume a lot of the core stars in a lot of the popular nebula's will also be hot spots and those planets near the outer bases between Colonia and the Bubble, I imagine...
