So with my current 1920x1200 monitor for example, getting a pair of 1280x1024 monitors would make sense - http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net...024_PLP.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150701033204

Not as much as 3x 1920x1200 - but I guess it's personal preference (and how much you can be bothered to fiddle with it).

Personally, it would mess with my head having 2 different sized monitors around the central one - when not gaming, I drag windows between all 3 pretty much constantly, and going from bigger to smaller would be a pain (imho).

Nvidia is easier to set up with this sort of stuff than Eyefinity in my experience - if you're (or anyone else is) going the AMD route, have a look at DisplayFusion, which is well worth it.

Well a Windows key + left/right arrow (or use Winsplit) and a press of the key simply throws windows (& resizes etc)...

DisplayFusion? That seems to simply be desktop related? ie: Nothing to do with gaminG?

..and what if your main (center) screen has a far higher DPI than your left/right monitors? Can AMD and/or NVidia cope with that? Sounds like the answer is no and you instead (ideally) need to stick to a single vertical resolution (eg: 1080) across all the screens and therefore need (approx) the same DPI across all the monitors for it to work/look OK?
