The new Tobii eyetracker 4C is awesome

Very unfortunate that it only works with "small" screens, max 27 inch. It would be a perfect addition for my 38inch curve.

Maybe Tobii could in the future develop a way to make two units work together with the software to support multi-monitors or very wide screens...

I'm playing in a diy gamechair (see signature) and i have to lean forward to touch the panels, i am 1m87 with long arms so i suppose i'm somewhere of a meter away. Tobii says max range is 1.5m.

Their website says max range is 95cm, which is a pain as I sit 1.3m from my screens.

I saw it too. Sorry my bad. (The info about 1.5m came from a different source, i should have checked it better myself)

Damn, I was hoping you were right :) I'm looking at a new desk to get to the Tobii to be practical which seems... excessive. Oh well, maybe just keep the money and put it to an HTC Vive.

I do not share this point of view. Many people use headtrackers in combat. The Tobii 4C is a headtracker AND an eyetracker in one. Perhaps znort would be so kind to share how he experienced this 'useless for combat' statement or is it just a persaonal assumption? Please elaborate.

with head tracking you have two mostly independent 'axes': your head and your eyes. with that comes the ability to set your general view independently of the focus of your attention, and combining both you get great flexibility to control the environment (much like you do in RL)

with eye tracking you are stuck to one axis, your eyes. whatever you focus, just by looking, will become the center of your view after a configurable threshold of time. that's how you are supposed to use the thing! however, if your gaze jumps around, switching between different points of interest (imagine: pips, left panel, target info) the view will constantly wobble and try to follow. for me this happens a lot in combat, and this mechanism just can't keep up with the pace. also, quick looks to the sides for example are simply not possible.

another way to put it is, while a head tracker gets your an immense field of vision you can instantly access, eye tracking is more like slowly panning through that same area with tunnel vision.

now, with some discipline and tweaking i guess you can get used to that, but it has obvious limitations. that's why i called it 'useless' for combat: anyone expecting from this the performance of a regular head tracker will be a tad disappointed. i did and it's gathering dust now (waiting to be recycled in a little project for people with 'special abilities'... don't get me wrong, it's a great device, well made, reasonably priced. but it's just not intended for hectic situations like virtual carnage usually is :D)

i saw the linked video, and similar others. well, that's some very relaxed blue zone rat killing there. is it possible? of course. there's people doing combat with no tracker at all! for them it would maybe even be an improvement (but for that money you can have a head tracker anyway). so it's technically not 'useless' but it's the last input device i would choose for combat.

I am doing a video on the 4C with headtracking and eyetracking. It is a paid sponsorship, but I will give an absolute honest review. So far it works well. I am still tweaking the settings for combat though.

smoothness for me seems to work a lot better than outright responsiveness, but I will thoroughly test this first, and is why I havent completed the video yet.

But so far the combination of head tracking and eyetracking has made the unit far more usable in combat than just eyetracking alone.

The combination of eyetracking and headtracking in the 4C is what makes the difference. And having separate settings for both allows you to ease off on the eyetracking so that it still works, but feels more weighted and very gradual, whilst making head tracking control the head movements more realistic

I have a tracker IR, and I can honestly say the 4C is starting to feel a bit better.. but I am still messing around with the settings.

Got an email today from Tobii saying that owners of the EyeX are eligible for 70% off a 4C. That would drop the price to $70 shipped...

The question which would interest me the most is: how is the range on this device? I have the first version, and while i consider it very useful in combat (and usually keep it switched off outside of combat), my only real problem is its detection range. When being relaxed in my "pilots chair" (which really is more like a racing car chair, but hey... ) the eye tracker is unreliable for me, so bigger detection range would be -the- selling point for me.
.
I would appreciate if somebody could give me the info on this before the 70% off expires. :)

nice device if you want to gently fly around or hover over planet surfaces. useless for combat.

edit: note these comments were about the original version w/o head tracking, not the 4c.

I own the original and imho its very useful in combat. It follows your target flawlessly and quick. It makes combat a lot easier. At least it does for me. Only problem i have it follows your eyes constantly which can be annoying. But that can be easily fixed with a hotkey turning the eyex on/off. I am tempted to buy the 4c but not sure yet how well the headtrack works in combination with eye tracking.

I also -was- tempted to buy it. I got as far as ordering it on their website, along with the 70% off voucher. Unfortunately then i crashed into their payment options. The first EyeX i was able to pay, at that time they still accepted PayPal. Now they don't take that any more and would only accept credit cards, which would be effort for me to get.
.
I am a little confused and grumpy about this at the moment... why do they block all payment methods which allow me to pay anywhere else but with them?

I bought mine from Amazon yesterday, arrived today. Must say, it looks the dogs **** and is at the same time barely even noticeable on the monitor bezel (black on black works).

My problem is my OS.. pre sp1 Windows 7 means I can't install the software to run it. Can't install the SP1 upgrades and so today is looking to be an expensive birthday. W10 and a new SSD ordered, so it could be a while before I fly again and actually test it!

Does it use the same monitor mount as the EyeX?

Yes, it does. I just got my 4C yesterday and it mounted perfectly on the monitor I used for the original Eyex. So I have an "old" Eyex to give to my son, plus 2 brand-new unused mounting strips that came with the 4C.
