the next spaceship: the eagle

what do you expect more from this new ship ? What would you like more from it ?

It's also the start craft for the bounty hunter profession, so I can't see it being short ranged.

Well if it has a Hyperdrive (and as a player ship, it's likely), it won't be limited to short range/system travel, but rather like the Sidewinder for the starting small trader, a Bountyhunter would have their eyes on something more Cobra sized for the medium term - Ferdelance Lightspeeder perhaps?

The eagle is a tough one for me. I really want to have a go in it, however equally I want to start with a sidewinder.

I guess it all depends on how much it costs but my current plan is for a viper to be my ship of choice so I may end up hopping over the eagle.

Hopefully some missions will involve you having to use a supplied craft, that way we can have a play in all of the ships without having to buy them.

The Eagle already seems to be very much Cobra sized.

The Viper will be (in my eyes) one of the best fighting crafts (only the Eagle and the Viper are clearly dedicated for battle)
I think it will have really cool hardpoints (up to Turret) but it should be less agile than the Eagle. Like a torpedo boat in comparison do hydrofoil.

Let's see what FD will build.... but I'm sure it will be right cool ;)

nobody voted a more functional cockpit...

i guess that is not so important.

btw, it's me or this ship is the nearest to a ''Starcitizened'' style than anyone else in the Elite catalog ?

It's because it has more emphasis on atmospheric flight, I suppose... or just that imperial flare.

I always considered it to be a short range combat fighter, best suited for atmospheric shenanigans.

surprisingly you are right:

..and it seems to me bigger than how it was in frontier... isn't it ?

or i am wrong ?
From memory, it was a bit smaller than the Sidewinder in Frontier.

Basically I don't think we can reliably use the previous games to judge ship sizes, except in extremely general terms.

The Eagle should probably be an "air" superiority fighter or interceptor. Lightly armoured but very fast and manoeuvrable. Not a ship that might last in a prolonged engagement, and wouldn't be used solo but a part of a wing of ships to quickly overwhelm and dominate the enemy.

Honestly this incarnation of the Eagle seems large and sturdy. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a more deadly ship in the hands of a skilled and aggressive pilot than the Cobra mk 3. Or maybe it's better for running down and taking out small, agile opponents like Federal Condor fighters and Sidewinders, but struggles more with a beefy and well armed Cobra mk 3?

I can't wait to get my hands on one, either way. I suspect I'll be spending most of my time in a Cobra mk 3, just for the nostalgia value, but the Eagle is very tempting for a more mercenary oriented play-style.

True, I hadn't considered this re-imagining of it and was thinking more of the version from FE2/FFE. As you say, this could well be a more combat orientated craft and therefore be much more dangerous than the venerable Cobra Mk.III, which after all is a trading craft.
