Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Finally got it, not seen any of the goodies apart from fires on a hot planet and the UI change., Major plus point, my old mouse - jpad problem seems to have gone/been fixed! YAY!

It seems to me that NMS is finally looking more like it did in the original previews. I read somewhere that the procedural algorithm they were using was protected under IP laws so they had to quickly do their own and now that original algorithm is free to use.....is all that true? It would make a bit of sense considering how different the game looked at launch and now is finally starting to look like what was originally shown.

You might be referring to this about the "superformula", and the answer is 'kinda'. Another company claimed copyright over the algorithm, but they settled it amicably. It never went to court, and it wasn't rewritten.

The HG offices were destroyed in the floods of 2013, which meant that they did have to rewrite a lot of stuff. That was when Sony came in to rescue them.

Ah I see, so they used that super formula from start?...hmmmm, oh well I enjoyed it loads back then and I'm enjoying it loads after every update. Happy they added disable hold to confirm, except I still have to hold it to log discoveries....which is a PITA!

Only thing I want now is different bimoes per planet, cold at the poles warm at the equators and temperate inbetween (and variations thereof).

This is where addons like Fast Actions (and it's companion Small Cursor) come into their own - and I'm glad to see that they have already been updated for Origins.

Agreed, that would be cool. :) Not sure if their planetary biomes algorithm is that granular though - would probably need a rewrite. It's also a point where Odyssey might score heavily over NMS in the future.

Yeah. Bye Elite, I guess my Carrier stays in Ratraii and I go for a stroll in NMS.
Looks great.
Sadly, the video only shows the first surprisingly good bit I happened on in a few minutes of looking around. The next jump took me to a system with 3 stars and a bunch of planets that look most interesting, it could be a welcome distraction to find a few more of the bits the launch video shows :)

HG said from the outset that a single biome per planet was there to encourage (force) players to move between planets.

I really liked NMS and ED from the start. Both have got better through time, ED 'rather slowoly' with planetary landings being my favourite. NMS having been releasing meaningful updates at an impressive rate and to my surprise my favourite has been base building.

However I don't find the game's comparable. Broadly one is flight and space based, the other walking and planet based. I easily enjoy both. Whereas a certain other developer must be very upset about the addition of sandworms, with their game experience being largely jpeg and imagination based. :ROFLMAO:

I love also that HG are saying that this release is starting a new phase for NMS, and that their passion for their project seems undiminished. All addons are for free. What an amazing group of people they are! As they say in the Tour de France, chapeau.

I'm pretty sure that was one of the earliest mods I downloaded back in the day, but now I mainly run it vanilla.

Ah I suppose that makes sense, but I would prefer it to be multi biomes per planet.

And all these updates, I can't even remember the number, are for free and no microtransactions either.
Fdev is gonna charge for Odyssey so imho they'd better come up with something realy good.

It's amazing how much a small team like Hello Games can produce and bring out a bunch of bug fixes in between too without us having to wait untill something gets fixed with the next major update or being fixed ever at all.

I find NMS a little like a boiling kettle. When the kettle boils its hot (err), stay with me. Everyone jumps in and makes a cup of tea from the water. However once the water starts to cool off, then.....
The boiling part would be the updates, its what happens after that.

Its a shame, but I don't think HG could boast of players that spend huge amounts of consecutive hours in the game, certainly not many anyway. I'm like that, on release of an update I'm there, but I can't say it keeps me engrossed for long hours in a row.
I have a lot of hours in the game, but for 4yrs, its probably not that many, spread out.

Get my point.

Why is that ?

Honestly if they added multiplayer shared base ownership, or let me bind "roll" on the ship to an analogue axis, I'd probably never stop playing the game. As it stands, I keep observing and admiring each successive update while hoping for at least one of these two key features. Eventually I'll return to the game regardless, and it'll be awesome to have so many stacked layers of new content to mess around in. But yeah overall I think NMS is pretty similar to Elite in this one respect, where people flock to the game for a couple weeks to check out the updates, and then hit the snooze button for the next 3 months or however long.

I'm similar, only got 500+ hours in the game, but I think I've enjoyed those 500 more than I've enjoyed Elite (I've still enjoyed Elite just not as much and time wise it has a lot of uninteresting time sinks when travelling around.)

NMS is far more of a "chillout" game. I feel I "should" play it a lot more, but then other games come along. But like Elite no other games outside of racing sims have had me back year on year on year.

It happened gradually, but today I don't play Elite anymore yet I play NMS regularly. It's just SOOO much better for exploration gameplay, and it keeps improving with regular substantial updates. NMS feels alive and ever changing for the better.

Yup, I think NMS has replaced Elite Dangerous for me.

500 or so hours in Steam, untold numbers on PS4... it's a game I'll play solidly for a month and then put down for another three (until the next update, basically). It's very much a chill-out game... something to pick up when I want fun gameplay but nothing too stressful or involved.

The only thing that stops me coming back for "just one more system" constantly is that after a while, you run out of biomes and variations on planets. It's not quite as 'samey' as E: D for planets, but it does get that way if you play for a long time consecutively. Addons help, but there's no addons on the PS4 and you're reliant on what HG give you.

This patch seems to have addressed a lot of that - with a lot more variation on planets. It'll probably be the case in a month or so I'll grow tired of those too, but that just opens up a window in my time for another distraction / game. I'm totally cool with it being a drop-in, drop-out kind of experience.

It's long since replaced E: D for me as an exploration game, but now it has to compete with MSFS too which is a whole new level.

The more I see & read of Odyssey, the more it just strikes me as all too little, too late. I'm not interested in "not at launch". It should have come out four years ago, immediately after Horizons 2.0. Unfortunately, they've completely squandered the time since IMO, and E: D is now pretty far down in my playlist as a result. It will take something pretty special (and complete) to change that. 🤷‍♀️

...Why is that ?

I would have agreed up until base building, but since that I've sunk 'far too many' hours into the game. Each to their own of course, e.g. I can't see the point of going to Hutton Orbital.

Honestly if they added multiplayer shared base ownership...

You can configure the game so that anyone can edit your base, and then you could share the base location with your friends. It's not quite what you're after, but it is close.

I have the same feeling sad to say. However I've got way than my '50 hours of value' out of ED, so no complaints really, it's just disappointing, and very disappointing when compared to the many updates from HG.
