I'm super curious...How many have or are in the process of ditching Elite for NMS ?

ED is on hold for me until Q4 but the more I play NMS the more I am preferring it over ED. Still prefer the look and flight model of ED but NMS is so playable in a way ED never was. If Hello Games continue to improve NMS I may well uninstall Elite, just had enough of Frontiers inept Design team and today's debacle just reinforces my view that they are pretty much clueless about their own game.

I've become tired of empty promises of 'jam tomorrow', when tomorrow never comes.

I'm still waiting for NMS to get into a more-or-less final form before I jump in. Sounds like there are still a lot of bugs, features that have been mysteriously removed, and other odd gaps I'd rather avoid.

Is that your video or one you came across. Never seen a planet bombardment like that in NMS, looks very good. Is it a mod or from the game ?

.

What happened today ?

Not really ditched it, but rather just put it to the side for now until next major update. I might play some again in the coming weeks but it's not going to be as much as it used to be.

True.

I prefere ED flight as well. They're two different games to me. Elite is the flying solo in the empty void of dark space, while NMS is base building and having just fun.

I heard about this before. It's somehow related to those systems where a freighter under duress are spawned. And somehow (not sure how you do it) it's possible to get it to spawn in the planet. Essentially, it's a bug causing this, but it's really cool to watch anyway. And I agree with the gamer, something like this should be added to the game (properly).

Btw, have you started the new community event? Not sure what to do with the collected magic poop though.

And massive base building... I'm currently spending 90% building, 5% other things, and 5% community events. Bought the "Hah!" emote just a moment ago. LOL!

Never going to happen. I quit NMS Next after about 90 hours, and half of that was forcing myself through the tedious busy-work required to complete the story lines. Much like the original release version, the thing I enjoy most about the game is taking screenshots. Unfortunately they're all 1280x720 with all the settings turned to off/low because the game still runs ridiculously poorly at 1080p, and I still have to restart the game every time I change graphics options, which is more effort than I care to give.

Base building stlil seems completely pointless in a game about exploration, but I gave it a shot anyway for the science dude quest. I created an underground room in my base, then came back a bit later to find a random tree growing right in the middle of my underground, walled off room, and it was sticking right up through the ceiling. Ok no big deal, I destroyed the tree, finished off the room and left it for a while.

I returned a little later, only to find that the save point POI that was previously nearby on the surface was now sitting in the corner of my underground room. This was more annoying than the tree, since I couldn't destroy the save pont, but it still wasn't the end of the world. I walled off the save point and moved the entire room a couple of blocks to one side. Out of sight, out of mind (well, sight, at least).

Finally I returned to the base the next day, only to find that all of the terrain had reset, leaving the entire underground section of my base completely filled in with rock. That was the final straw, and the end of my interest in base building.

There's really nothing about the game which holds my interest anymore, and it's stlil absolutely packed full of bugs.

I realise this is quite a negative post, so I will mention one positive experience I had. The first crashed ship I ever came across, was a B-rated 35 slot mess. Due to all the damage, it had less available slots than my current ship, but I figured it would be worth it after doing some repairs, until I could find something better. The repair costs were much steeper than I expected, so it took quite a few hours to fix it up, but in the process of repairing the ship little by little, I grew quite attached to it. I already liked the design, and it had enough total slots to be useful all throughout the game. That little damaged ship stuck with me throughout my entire playthrough, and I couldn't imagine giving it up, even for a 48 slot freighter.

Here she is:

And a few extra screens from my journey.

I shelved ED while playing NMS, but ED has too many things that NMS lacks for me to ditch it. A game is going to have to replace ED gameplay-wise before I walk away from it forever. Bethesda's Starfield might be such a game, but nobody really knows right now.

I've currently shelved ED for Star Wars Battlefront and Overwatch, and I suspect it will remain on the shelf until Q4 (the "Gnosis Incident" being an exception).

It's also a hangar for your ships btw. I just wish we could decide which landing pad they'd go on

Had that exact same thought a few times meself...but Im not on any nms forums so...haha probably a good thing on hindsight.

The combat is ok but simplistic and basic in nature...it reminds me of freelancer from 20 years ago, a game in which I excelled in and almost had it cost me my marriage at the time. Which is sorta why my gameplay in space tends to lead to me flying a short range fighter almost all the time...I simply dont have space fer the drives needed to go anywhere nice, so I either sacrifce firepower and sheild/speed for cargo space and range/star type...hmm nicer problems to have and all that.

The combat itself can be good when yer taking on 5 and yer sheild drops on the first pass cos yer in a small fighter that cost less than 8m...its little things like that that distract me from actually getting the damn base setup let alone built, now I gotta build the module to change appearance which means expanding...again!

Seriously...90% of my base is either on the water or under it...thought bout sticking the teleporter underwater too then invite everyone round. Expansion is not without some shall we say, issues with whatever richard designed the place in the first place...

What was the question again? Guess Im just lucky and unlucky cos Im actually enjoying both the combat and non combat stuff...lucky cos it means Im having fun and unlucky cos its like trying to do everything at once so progression has been slower in most areas despite the time played. Itll come...laters ^

I'm playing (albeit infrequently right now) on the Xbox One X and it's been improved a bit with the last 2 patches. The initial loading screen is faster, there are less crashes and there's a bit less lag here and there. I haven't gone back to my underground base that I deleted to see if it would still end up almost unusable with all the terrain filled in. I would likely build it in a different location as NMS allowed me to build an underground base close to a trading post. Not only did you constantly have to dig yourself out from underground, you would randomly get a notice that you entered the base and couldn't do any building. I also found that I could leave from 1 underground tunnel but outside there were 2 distinct entry holes, really weird quantum mechanical holes I guess.

I've put in about 40 hours on creative mode and about 15 on normal. I like the game but I don't think I'll ever love it. I could elaborate with all the reasons that I don't love it but it really just comes down to personal preference. I will play it from time to time but I know it won't replace ED or even a few other games I have. So, no I won't be ditching ED for NMS.

I shelved Bethesda's Starfield might be such a game, but nobody really knows right now.

There seems to be no info on it. But it's from the guys that made Morrowind..so it's gonna be great. Quest, items, everything..a real game. Now if they pull off the whole huge procedural generation of a galaxy, and now since ray tracing is starting to get big...in 1-2 years when they release it, better nvidia ray tracing maybe rtx 3000 series, it's probably gonna obliterate everything in the space segment.

t looks very interesting (if a bit cartoony), but I doubt I'll leave Elite. Perhaps it's just nostalgia, but I've been playing Elite since 1984 and can't see myself stopping now.
I

Its rare I buy a game and don't play it, again and again. This is because I buy more or less only sandbox style games or sims. So most every game/sim I have, will get revisited when I'm in the mood to play it.

The game series I have the most hours (uncountable probably), is the Arma series and A2CO + all dlc's in particular and that's not really a game to me but a hobby, so it gets more love than most. Not the 'game' itself, never played any of the released campaigns for the Arma series, its all about the Editor and the war gaming world you build yourself, or with a group, inside the gaming world. Far more spectacular than the campaigns.

With all sandbox games, its what you yourself build out of the game, your own gaming world. Not following someone elses game/storyline. All of the games I have, I build a gaming world for me, or indeed from the Arma point of view a group too. That is why I buy the games I buy really.

I can't really say any of the game/sims I have, have been played fully, because if they had, its my imagination that would have stopped working. Until that happens, I'll play in my own world and way. ;)

Well more accurately it is from the 'guys' that made Skyrim and fallout 4. It is however from the same company that made Morrowind and the older Bethesda games.

As for NMS, my new HDD is working so i may well start the process of getting the new NEXT update, but in terms of patches it still sounds like i might be waiting a couple more releases before i start playing again.

While some developers are sleeping and still do not know what they are going to do with their game, HG continues to work and evolve their game without stopping.

Hello Everyone!
Thank you for your feedback and kind words after our last development blog post. We hope to continue sending these updates for a little while. It’s nice to be at a point in time where we can share information and updates with the community.
While some of us are also beginning to work on new features and content, the team continue to work hard making fixes. We listen intently to the community and appreciate the effort people go to in writing up bugs and feature requests.

Community Research Update
The response to our first community mission was great to see, and your feedback is being rolled into 1.59 and 1.6. It was also lovely to read all the messages left by explorers on the Community Research planet – so many notes sent from all across the world and broadcast all over the universe.
Specialist Polo continues their investigation into a strange new phase of galactic generation. The collective digging efforts of the last week have given them a vast store of Hex Cores on which to experiment, and they have several promising leads. What secret do these cores hold, what message are they bringing for the universe?
1-59-screenshot.png

While they continue to investigate, Polo’s mind has turned to biology. Beginning on Thursday 6th September, they will reach out to all explorers and once again request their assistance in documenting the changes taking place in the fabric of reality.
This research project involves finding and feeding animals on a planet that shows signs of previous Hex Core contamination. Dedicated Travellers who explore the diets of the creatures on this world will be rewarded with Quicksilver to spend at Polo’s Synthesis Bot. Polo notes that explorers are free to carry out their own research or refinement projects on any animal byproducts produced during these encounters.
The Quicksilver Synthesis Bot has also developed some new items:

  • A range of new base building parts. Travellers may attempt to curry favour with the Gek or the Sentinels by constructing large metal statues around their home.

  • The sleek, stylised Blazing Orbit helmet, available as a fully-recolourable customisation option to the Anomaly suit.

  • A pair of touching decal portraits of Nada and Polo themselves.
A new laughing gesture, allowing Travellers to experience joy.

The Synthesis Bot is striving to please its masters by creating a diverse range of new items, tailored to their desires. Significant new developments will appear in the shop in the coming weeks, as well as new ways to discover Quicksilver while playing…

Community Spotlight
No Man’s Sky has always been a game that is built on the community and the stories that you generate. The beautiful screenshots, shared discoveries, fan art, stories, comics – these are incredibly inspiring to the team. It’s a privilege to work on a game with such a passionate community.

We also want to give a special shout out to reddit user u/AcoupleofIrishfolk, whose screenshots feature as the wallpaper on more than one computer or phone among the team.

Development Update – Current Patch and Future Plans
Patch 1.59 is live on all platforms today and has a number of critical fixes. It also introduces the new items to the Quicksilver Synthesis Bot.
While some members of the team have been working to make these fixes and to get them to you as soon as possible, the rest of the team have been hard at work on upcoming features and critical fixes, optimisations and Quality of Life improvements. Some of these will follow in the coming days.
We don’t normally do this, but here is a sneak peek, the team are also currently working on:

  • Fixing an issue that prevents shared bases from downloading while exploring.
  • Adding new attack behaviours to the Biological Horrors…
    Spit01.gif
  • Enabling terrain tessellation on PS4 (base and Pro) and Xbox One X. New dynamic tessellation enables detailed terrain height maps without sacrificing performance.

  • New, custom options for body shape have been added to the appearance modifier. This gives players far greater control over how they appear in the universe, increasing the diversity and variety of characters for all races
    BodyShapes_600_2.gif

  • Based on feedback from the community, we’ve added the ability for players on PC to set Hotkey Bindings to rapidly access options in the quick menu. This allows players to bind commonly used functions such as switching to third person, using their torch, or entering photo mode to number keys (or those mice that have loads of buttons).
    QuickMenu.gif

As we continue development, more of the team will become free to work on new features. We want to involve the community in shaping these features, and hope to share some of this plan with you in the next few weeks.
Thank you for being here with us as we continue to develop No Man’s Sky NEXT, and we hope you enjoy all our improvements and expansions to the game.
Thank you so much,
Sean

Patch 1.59 Patch Notes

  • Added new items to Polo’s Quicksilver Synthesis Bot

  • Fixed an issue that could cause discoveries to stop saving.
  • Fixed an issue where players with a specific number of inventory slots would have some slots hidden by other UI elements.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Community Research portals not to return players to the correct galaxy after mission completion.
  • Ensured that the first entry in the Space Station Teleport list will take players in the incorrect galaxy back to their home galaxy.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause portals to close and not lead players back to the correct planet.
  • Fixed an issue where players could become stuck on a black screen.

  • Fixed an issue where the starship was unable to land after changing missions while facing a mission marker.
  • Fixed an issue where players with corrupt saves would be recovered but have no ship (please note – this involves instances where the ship was the corrupt data, and so ships have been restored to default).

Hotkeys!!!!??!! I missed that. Something we've been hoping to get since the emotes came out! Woot! ... Oh, wait, it's in the next update. :/
