The Not so Engoodening of Elite Dangerous Odyssey Review - How I Fell Out of Love

It is really sad to see how Fdev managed to screw things up so bad and slay the feeling we all had for the game.

Fortunately, i've given a chance to NMS and i'm having a lot of real fun (not grind), can take as long they want to give a crap to the game again, i'll be doing great exploring NMS. The game is truly amazing and i recommend all frustrated commanders to give it a try.

Here's how i felt when trying NMS:

It seems like Fdev had taught us how to notice and appreciate good space games, by insisting in their own failure.

@edit - fixing Fdev instead of 'if deaf'
@edit2 - putting the video again. Mods are really looking at this post uh?

Meanwhile, at BlackMaze's channel...

While I have little time for Hawkes Gaming, their unsubstantiated claims about Smear Campaigns or their constant self-aggrandizing, so I CBA to watch the video.

But BlackMaze does make a point. After a rather bug-ridden weekend, I have been leaning towards having a look at Star Citizen - if I'm going to play a buggy mess, it might as well be a pretty buggy mess!

What keeps me from giving SC a closer look is the lack of VR support.

I tried NMS recently, and while I have a ton of respect for how Sean and Hello Games managed to turn things around after the initial release, I still feel like it's not my kind of game.

I'll give Space Engine a closer look this weekend. As recommended by Obsidian Ant tonight - another major content creator who used to be one of Elite's greatest fans, but turned sour after Odyssey. I'm still amazed how Frontier managed to screw things up so badly from a rather comfortable position.

Space Engine is great, hope you enjoy the gameplay.

you should watch it. it is like someone making a parody video of a hawkes gaming video. so over the top. 🤣

According to SC devs, VR is meerely a click of a few buttons away, so you should be happy that shortly after release and some bugs removed, they may get their VR added. Looking forward to that, myself.

Tried NMS myself, a bit. Why cant they just upgrade the look, move away from the storyboard cartoon dev proposal look, to being realistic? The have all the great interaction stuff done really nicely, just up the look. And why does everyone complain when EDO stutters down to 10 fps every so often, but it's ok for NMS to have that? It's a fully released game, I paid for it, etc? Happens to me all the time in there.

Im not sure if it's FDev screwing things up, entirely. It was pretty clear FDev was going to implement walking. With how past releases have gone, to me, that clearly meant being able to somehow be outside your ship, most likely not fluently, but more like how you'd enter your SRV or SLF. They did just that, in implementing the ole teleport/presence to a spot outside your ship, so we'd be able to see our ships, essentially.

Having mission givers, weapons, missions sampling lifeforms, proper looking planets (when bugs aren't messing it up) is actually way more than I was expecting.

How the actually f did anyone expect different? What delusional world are these people in, that they expected to get to walk around their cockpit? Im a VR fan, and enjoy EDH in VR. FDev made it 100% apparent they were not going to have it ready at release, if ever. Why would anyone expect more than what is there now? It's great that there are ways around it, but they didnt say they were going to do that...for whatever reasons.

I can see everyone asking for fixes, more stuff, getting as much as they can for that whopping $40. But to be upset they didnt provide enough, when you've played ED for all these years, where they manage to only fit in the bare minimum, possibly because they can only do it that way, is really off a bit. If you think you like ED, but were hoping somehow you'd have what SC wishes it could become (they's about 1% there, and will max. out at 5%), then maybe its time to reconsider options. Dream of GTA in space, or that new Starfield game (I bet you cant get in and out of your seat seamlessly in that one, oh no...), but stop with the expecting everything. Thats for a future release.

And why expect cockpits when they didnt mention that would be a thing, even though they said we'd be able to walk around? That would be like me expecting MSFS2020 to actually have the earth fully represented accurately, since they said that's what they'd do. I bought that, flew around my neighbourhood, to find it's just a generic repeated model, not my house at all, in its spot. Should I really go ask for my money back?

In fairness to No Man's Sky, it does have mod support. So getting a more realistic look isn't outside the realm of possibility. Mods to change space to black, more realistic looking black holes, more toned down terrain and sky color palettes. There is a realm of possibilities. The only downside for me about NMS is the basic ship mechanics and the whole "star is part of the skybox" bit. But otherwise, those are small prices to pay if you're into the difference in gameplay approaches.

I was watching some videos and saw Everspace 2. Decided to take the plunge, purchased the Early access for $52, and it's already better fleshed out.
I know it's early access, I know it has bugs, I know my game will be reset between releases, still enjoying it more than repetitive scanning on planets that look all the same.

It's a really nice game! I'll give a try!
Thanks for the tip.

The release that, according to CIG, is right around the corner for... how many years now?
You will forgive me for not holding my breath. But I will certainly give it a look once it's out.

I won't go into the rest of your rant. You seem to be angry with anybody who's not happy with Odyssey, and that rarely leads to healthy discussions. I have elaborated multiple times why I think a lot of bad decisions have been made on the road to Odyssey, and I don't want to repeat them ad nauseam.

Just can't see past the extremely arcade flight mechanics in NMS, so that's not an option. SC is an option potentially but I'm in no rush to play it and still unsure about the flight in that from looking at it.

Weird that I'm attached to Elite because I love its flight model and yet I am now mostly only using the ship to get about so I can do stuff on foot :D NMS didn't blow me away there either though. It just felt... plastic. Certainly no more fun than Minecraft...
