The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

I'm not sure what I did. I've only had the Rift (CV1) for a few days, but today, somehow, I must've changed something and now whenever I move my head in any direction, I get a bit of overlapping images. All the text or whatever splits into two images that aren't quite lined up, and then re-merge when I stop moving my head. This only happens in Elite so I must've changed something I shouldn't have. I know I was fiddling with graphics to find this "VR High" choice that people kept talking about (mine said "Custom"), and I'm sure I fiddled with other things but I thought I had undone everything I did and it still does it.

Does anybody have any idea what setting it might be that could cause that? It's very distracting.

Edit: today it seems to be fixed. No idea why. Thanks anyway.

Can it be, that there are CV1's with different lenses? I had the chance to buy the CV1 directly from a kickstarter, who received it very early. So I do not understand the big issues with the god rays. Checked also some Youtube to see for myself, and it doesn't look the same with my CV1. When you are in the hangar and look towards the lights at the wall, I see some shining thing, but for me this looks more like a realistic reflection, when you look directly towards a lamp spot.

Reason why I am asking is, that the Oculus Rift had some delivery problems around May - probably because certain missing parts.

Once you've settled in and feel confident, give this a try ... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=69.

You'll be surprised at the improvement.

Using this tweak, I have a better image on my CV1, (better than ED's SS1.5). By using the oculus driver Pixel Density setting set to 1.2, I get 90fs in stations with 80% GPU use, and the image is still better than ED's SS1.5. Read what I do here .. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=254075&p=4033433&viewfull=1#post4033433

i had seen this on Reddit as well so decided to give it a go.....the improvement is definitely there, very happy with the results. However, I matched my ED SS and set it to 1.5, after 10 minutes in the SRV I had my first VR motion sickness.....not recommended at all.

I'll try it at 1.2 next time.

its possible that some are worse than others but i think all have them.

have you tried....... (cant remember exactly which have it worse) possibly Henry,? at the start there is - assuming i am not confused - some white text on black background which shows the issue clearly.

Hi Mad Mike - I don't see the gods ray in Elite or only very little. So let me check the game Henry and I will find out if there are some with my CV1 or if I am just simple immune towards this topic. Thanks!

So far, this is all working GREAT and is by far my favorite game with CV1.

I've noticed, however, that when I start ED from Steam, it goes straight into 32-bit ED. (Normally when starting ED, it comes to the Frontier login page and you can choose 32 or 64-bit there). Is there a way to get it to start 64-bit ED when launching from SteamVR?

The hurting face will go away with time, wives will always be angry, its part of their genetic make-up. the problem is you never know why or for how long it will last.

Kind of makes me glad I'm in between wives right now :)

I just got my Oculus four days ago. I had to rebuild my PC and started using it yesterday. I'm blown away by ED on the Rift. I'm in the ship. You feel the size of the cockpit. Even when you outfit your ship you have this amazing sense of scale. I'm like, "That's my ship?!"

So, giddy. I sure know my ex-wife would have flipped out by now. Ahh, freedom.

(P.S. I ordered from Oculus on April 29th. My projected ship is in August. Still no date. I got lucky and bought it from Amazon on May 6 before it sold out. It took a month for Amazon to ship it but they finally did. So happy)

The HMD's resolution is fixed at 2160x1200. Any changes you make in game or on desktop are only representative of your monitor. If you were expecting this first generation HMD to look as sharp as a monitor then you didn't do your homework. The light bleed (godrays) are known in both Rift and Vive. If you spend some time reading these VR threads you will find pretty much all your answers.

Ohhh....I had the same question about the resolution.

Strangely, when I first tried it the resolution looked really bad. I saw it was set low and moved it to 1920x1080 and it was so much better. I can't imagine that it was my imagination.

So I came here wondering if I could set it above 1920x1080.

There is some loss of imagine quality but much less than I expected. And the added 3D VR feel totally makes up for it.

I feel a little disoriented after my first flight. It's a little frightening because you completely disconnect from the real world. When you play on your monitor you're still at your desk. But on the Rift, when I move my Ch Throttle in the real world I see my virtual hands move.

I'm so thankful to all the hardworking engineers that made it possible for us to enjoy this technology.

Oh, and docking my ship is just a totally different experience.

glad your enjoying your Rift. If you haven't tried it yet, try the debug tool discussed here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/254075-Supersampling-with-Oculus-works-again! for even sharper graphics

It's Rift day!!

Hi guys, my Rift is coming today. Fingers crossed that work is quiet LOL. I was just wondering if there was anything I can do before it arrives to speed up the setup process? Can I start downloading/installing the software for example?

I have an Oculus ID, is that the only login I need?

I'm a bit nervous to be honest. I'm one of those annoying people that are not easily impressed :) I pray that the god rays aren't too bad and I hope the cable doesn't bother me (I don't use my head tracker much because the cable gets on my nerves, plus other reasons). Plus I'm used to 3440x1440 sharpness on a 34" monitor on Ultra so I hope I don't focus on the the lower resolution [blah]

Good luck! Really looking forward to hearing your opinions, keep us posted.

NP... Henry is worth a look anyway, really cute cartoon, great if you have kids.

the rays are not in the video itself just hte intro iirc.

btw its not a game, just a VR short.... as is Lost, invasion and a few others, all cool tho

The setup process is thorough and well done.

I don't think you can install anything in Oculus home until you go through it.

If ED is through steam then you'll only need to install and setup steam VR to play. No, it's nowhere near as clear as your monitor, and no, it won't matter to you. :)

Thanks for the reply, I installed the Oculus App earlier to save time. Rift has just arrived so here we go!...

Try everything free in Oculus home (duh). I was especially taken with the Mythos of the World Axis demo. Shows some of what is really possible in a game designed for VR.

When first trying Elite, I recommend you do the training missions (once you're done just staring at the Eagle in the hanger). There's one in particular for VR and it does a good job of showing off.

Interested to hear how you get on. Are you a complete VR newbie? If so would hope you'll be blown away, even with the flaws with the current generation.

I got my CV1 running at the weekend and have been DK2 user for a while. I had some teething problems getting ED to run which took the shine off a little. All told I remain completely blown away by ED in VR. I would say I'm moderately impressed by other VR experiences, but nothing comes remotely close to ED for me so far.

I'm less impressed with the move from DK2 to CV1 and on balance I do wonder whether, if I could guarantee ongoing support for DK2, if I wouldn't have just stuck with the DK2 until next generation of HMDs. I can't so all's good I guess. And I still think ED in VR is the most ridiculously cool thing ever and I never thought it would happen in my lifetime. :D

My general thoughts on the CV1 experience:

Pros to the CV1 upgrade
-The SDE is less noticeable. However SDE was never an issue for me at all so this is a minor point for me.
-The higher res is good but not in any way groundbreaking. I was completely awed by the step up to 2.0 / 1.3 run time in DK2 in terms of general performance and quality and was actually very happy with what I was seeing in terms of clarity. CV1 improves this a bit, but I feel like I was getting similar clarity with DK2 on Ultra with 2.0 / 1.3. I do wonder though if this hasn't got a bit to do with how focussed we get on text clarity - I did note that my bobblehead was an actual distinct object in the CV1 despite my general slight "underwhelm-ment" so perhaps there is a step up here I'm not really appreciating.
-Weight is significantly better. Despite not feeling like DK2 was a problem it did kill my back a bit.
-Looks great

Cons
-God rays. Was dubious whether this would bother me. It really does. Pretty astonished it wasn't solved. I'm sure I'll get used to it. Only an issue in space and dark environments, granted.
-FOV. I prefer the "view" from the DK2. In the DK2 I feel like I'm looking through a circular or oval portal and it feels natural, in CV1 I have straight black borders in half-vision to each outside edge. Like in the Gear VR. Really don't like it, it feels substantially cheaper and reminds you you're looking at a screen. The trade off obviously is that you can focus them sensibly for your own IPD, but I never had an issue with DK2. So selfishly speaking its got worse for me.
-Sits worse on my head than DK2, sort of has to rest on the upper rim on my forehead with a gap below my eyes. Probably doesn't effect everyone.
-Increased frame-rate does nothing for me so far. Just feels "different" and means I can't run in Ultra any more. I guess we'll see if I find long play sessions better.

So yeah all told I feel pretty neutral about it, but pleased to have a stable, supported product :). I think I can best sum up any disappointment I feel (which is minimal) by saying that for me several factors in the hardware have actually reduced immersion. The god ray and FOV issues for me are both issues right in front of your face that remind you you're in goggles looking at a screen. For me lower res, lower framerate and SDE never really fell into this category. I'm sure that's a personal thing :).

Also this is all based on half an hour or so once it was up and running. May well feel differently after a long session and getting used to the changes.

about resolution, just try to run the debug tool with pixel density 1.5 and put inside the game an oversampling of 1.5 , of course is unplayable because the frame rate, but you can see the big possibilities of the device

HAve you tried War thunder.

Having a air combat in an stpitfire with the rift and Pixel density in 1.3 is symply amazing, (simulation mode, not cheap arcade battles :p)
