The Boeing and Space shuttle are both aerodynamical, so the distribution of mass and flight characteristic might be not perfect, but done with the right manners, with adding some dead weight where its needed it can be within the tolerance zone.
The point is in there you are not placing a totally unaerodynamical, and not flight capable body to the back of the 747, that helps a lot.
