If you don't go either armed to the teeth or in something very fast you deserve to get wasted, it doesn't take a genius to realise its a trap

That sounds like the exact kind of sentiment Helmut was accusing me of having with regard to PvP threats...which isn't really wrong. I think their should be some risk, even to those who are minding their own business and that the game should be very difficult for those who refuse to account for such threats; anything less doesn't really do justice to the setting. Regardless, I was pointing out that the game does feature unwanted, purely PvE ,threats that qualified, even if they were notably more acute in the past.
The first time I encountered one of those gold traps--which were outwardly indistinguishable from any other common signal source (they originally didn't have threat levels, and after threat levels were added, these were all threat 0) that frequently contained canisters that weren't part of any ambush--I came closer to seeing the rebuy screen than during any of the hundreds of PvP gank attempts my CMDR has experienced where he wasn't looking for a fight. My CMDR has literally never been shot down in any situation where I didn't specifically opt out of, or willfully delay, escape at least once in the encounter and I can credit the less forgiving nature of the early game for some of that.
There were still plenty of complaints about presumed PvP ganks during those days as well, when the the only thing separating them from some PvE encounters were hollow contacts on sensors. Difficulty and consent can't be the only factors involved in the antipathy some have for PvP.
Going to upgrade my first FSD.
What are you doing there, tough guy?
Putting a secondary on my 583rd FSD and maybe getting some escape and evasion practice on the way. More rarely, shooting down a novice aggressor or two who mistook the Backer # that is still my CMDR's handle for 'newbie'.
Alternatively join a PG like Mobius, play with friends and avoid the muppets.
Muppets are the best content the game has ever had.

Shame they were replaced with Thargoids, who have no sense of humor and don't even fight people inside stations anymore.
