Historians have even more bias than journalists. If you read that the something happens due to X its easy enough to find some who says it happened due to Y. Only at school you only ever get told X, and teachers are on average fairly left wing so X tends to be a left wing anti-american, anti British empire etc, or whatever leftie narrative the topic calls for.
I know. I've read History at university level for some years. Most teachers, at least in my country, are indeed left winged. But I make up my own mind about things anyway. :)

The link you provided may well form part of the lore, but it does not ring true to me, so I suggest it was probably written by a Federalist! :p

It may indeed. Certainly sounded nice in my ears (eyes). Perhaps too nice? So I'll read on and have no urge to make up my mind just yet.

“The heavier the pressure of the
state on the upper classes, the more intolerable became the condition
of the lower” (Rostovtzeff 1957: 430).

i could not possibily agree more!

give me zero tax! do away with any hinderances my enterprises and ventures face (specially costly or time consuming ones) and you all shall be better for it :D

honest!

ps: i agree, civilisation can only be attained via cricket!

Well said.

Every nation has done good and evil because humans themselves are notorious for riding that line.

Back on topic: Empire rocks, slaves yes please

Thought it was "Achenar" .. no middle R . hence the X on your sig ? :S

That's just my nod to the controversy surrounding that last year on the forums. :) I still stand by the R! Even Mr. Starmap himself, Drew, agrees with me! heh heh.

But Mars - The poll in this thread is not fair, with two "Yes" and only one "No" alternative. But no wonder, since it's written by an Imperialist. :p

Hi everyone.

As Styggron mentioned earlier the discussion of slavery is entirely valid as it will form part if the Elite universe, but please be mindful of your post content as you all know the forum has many age groups who participate and some who only view without posting.

Thanks for understanding.

I've just come back from a trip to India and Sri Lanka, sorry to disappoint you sir, but they hold the British in very high regard indeed.

This colonial guilt is western leftie self hatred. Not saying our colonial past is without blemish, but overall, it was a damn fine thing.

I best not tell you what I had as my forth option before I remembered this was a family forum and I thought better of it.....

Seems to me most people here in the forums will be on the Imperial side? Then even more reason to choose another side for me. No fun when everyone is your friend. :p

Not everyone in the Federation believes the profits from slavery should be exclusive to those in the empire. There is good money to be made moving meat cans.

Me? If it was my poll I'd settle for two options: Yes and No. Subtexts aren't necesarry IMO.

Very black and white though, don't you think?
Mars threw in a grey area when he said 'Have a slave but treat them well'. By doing this he was avoiding polarity of opinion in terms of good and evil. He opened the debate into spaces of uncomfortable dilemma and interpretation, not to mention the fantasy world of the unknown future.

We've got to watch those restrictive absolutes.

Maybe a 4th option could be 'No, unless it's legal"? :)

Facts remain though people. There are 70% pro-slavers here. The second option is merely for those with minor pangs of conscience. Personally I would never ever...

...er...there's no way of checking who voted what? Right? T.j?

:D

Maybe, but the problem with subtexts in a poll is that it almost never fits your personal taste. So it only makes it more difficult to find an option to vote for.

Yes, indeed. But to me there are no grey areas here. I'm against slavery. Period. There is no middle way.

I think people can make up their own mind without being steered in any one direction.

Not an option for me. It sounds more like a "Yes, unless it's illegal" :)

I dunno about that. Maybe I got lucky, but at my school (a rough dump of a place in Yorkshire coal mining country in the early 80s...) our history teacher taught us that there isn't a right or wrong when it comes to history, it's all a matter of interpretation. We were given sources and marked on the reasoning behind our conclusions.

That guy gave me a lifelong love of history and a stubborn refusal to believe anything until I've figured it out for myself.
