The pain of starting over or... a second pilot slot?

ok but go you have to install the game again?
Or is there a way to link your new product code with your current account?

(Plus a reference to later post in which text is really unreadable colour.)

I have two separate installations, the main reason is that I want to keep the logs for each commander separate. That and having separate short-cuts, so not having to log out and in, are the only reasons. The downside is that you have to go through the upgrade process twice each time.

There is no need to copy over mappings (I assume bindings was meant). - The options you set up (controls, graphics, audio) are shared (they are stored in a common location under the Users/*Yourname*/AppData tree) so there is no need to worry about separately having to set up each commander, the downside is that you can't make each commander different (i.e. one on HOTAS the other on a gamepad for example).

..., every CMDR takes up storage space on Frontier servers. That costs money and allowing multiple CMDR's would increases the data storage burden for no appreciable gain. That info will be there forever. Not to mention wading through that data stack would slow everyone else down.

If you want a second CMDR, buy another copy of the game and support the company. ...

This is, of course, the real reason behind FD's stance. And rightfully so, in my opinion!

On the other hand, I can see some equally justified desires of players:
- The desire not be forced to purchase the same paintjobs for every account.
- The desire for an easy use; The necessity to change user profiles in order to play with different commanders is not realy compfortable!
- The desire to play the "complete" game, even with your second commander. Buying a second commander for the base game (eventually on sale) is one thing; having to purchase the lates season as well is quite expensive! Especially, as there is not really more storage necessary for "Horizons"-saves in contrast to "vanilla"-saves.

In order to make the developer's need to fund the increased server space compatible with the mentioned customer's desires, I would suggest additional commander-slots purchasable at the 'Frontier Store'. The price of the base game (or maybe a little bit less) might be justified and a win-win situation for both sides.

i can only back that. for me, that 9,99 sale on base game was a good price for a second base game account. a second save slot for my main account with the season(s)? around the price of the base game - that would be reasonable for me.

concerning those being afraid of misuse of that feature - i think managing misuse should be even more easy with the same frontier-store account attached, instead of independent frontier-stores.

Dropbox gives me 2gb for free but FD can't store the tiny amount of data associated with your commander for you? :p I can certainly understand it being a financial reason but it isn't because its taxing to store the data.

I agree with the rest of your points though and do think being able to buy another slot that shared cosmetics would be the best solution :)

Easy to counter: Block / Bans affect the account, not the commander.

Also, whilst I accept *some* would do that the majority wouldn't and would in fact find the extra slots useful.

FD said they would allow it during the KS; last update I remember some time ago was Michael saying there were "complications" (paraphrased there)

I really wish they would - On a 2nd account I could try to go to Sag A* and beyond and not have to worry about Space Madness ...
Yes, I recall a quote from Michael Brooks a few months after the initial release of ED saying that multiple commanders was still in the plans but not any time soon. Then last year, before the release of Horizons I think, he said it was no longer in the plans. Personally, I suspect the FDev likes it this way. As testified by this thread, many including myself have purchased additional accounts which is not only more revenue for FDev now but from multiple upgrades in the future.

Totally agree on the matter of misuse. Anyone who wants to do it now can do so by purchasing a second account which have been really cheap at times. Misuse can actually be managed better by having multiple cmdrs tied to a single account.

I just realized that (being a solo player) I could buy a hard copy of the game (apparently not available) and play with different ships and cmdr's as often as i like.
Sometimes a game only allows one save, so you copy it, place it in a folder and make a new character. Good for allowing my grandsons to play when they visit.

Why isn't a disc available? Is it too costly? Is it to make people play online only for .... who knows what reason?
