The Past 48 Hours: On how emergent gameplay happens

That's one of the changes I've made. My T-9 lasted a long time, maybe 4-5 jump attempts but couldn't get away. I've also added a double engineered FSD with fast boot, don't know if that will help though.
I tried the double-engineered FSD in my T9. It's too hot! Really bad overheating unless you wait until you're a long way from the star before starting a jump.

Yes, I had the same experience, it's on the FC at the moment and will need more work! I've been on foot for a few months and while in space flying the courier that FDev gifted us. So far I haven't been interdicted in open when flying the courier. :)

No thanks. My need for curbstompery by overpowered players is non-existant and my desire to grind engineers against the curbstompery is equally valuated. This kind of "emergent" gameplay can kiss my rear.

I on the other hand can't actually remember the last time I was taken out by an NPC, so the PvP - even though I don't really engage in it myself - keeps things spicy. Billions in the bank now a rebuy means next to nothing .. but back in my Cmdr's youth, playing open iron mouse was pure ephenephrine / adrenalin.

o7 at the OP and some top T9 tips above.

I trade in a T10 so I can stand some pre-wake punishment but I especially like the FSD cut off trick .. and have been known to return in an iEagle to protect shipping, by preventing a ganker from using supercruise until he gives up, if pure firepower isn't your thing.

Billions in the bank and engineered to max is not the average player experience I'd say.

No but sharing the ocean with hungry sharks is a fine incentive to become a good (dare I say even, elite) swimmer? ;)

The OP talked about fighting back but a lot of the rest of the thread has been about survival. Large bank balances and engineering aren't necessary for developing a good evasion game which is more about tactics than hardware. o7

Of all INARA players. Pretty sure the average cmdr is not on Inara.

In that case you don't need to be. If any cmdr exporting data (EDMC/EDDN/Frontier API) "sees" another players carrier it will be in that list.
However, you could also dispute 30,000 is not 50% of the player base, since Inara has 199,000 registered Cmdrs. I'm probably proving your point here, as Steam stats are much higher etc etc

And once we've sorted out "Average", we could get into all sorts of semantics about "Players" (active?). :)

But, my personal guess is that the active ED players (at least the ones you are going to bump into in Open) have had time to earn billions and engineer to the max.

This CG has been pretty active and vibrant. Granted, not every week as a CG like this...
Could be because it's a combat CG? People are flying combat fitted ships and want to enjoy combat?

The mysterious thing is when there's a trade CG and some people wonder why the CG contributors don't want to take part in combat...

I've been campaigning to get Frontier to add "protect the traders" CGs to go side-by-side with all trading CGs, because trading CGs bore me to tears. I confess, when I'm bored to tears, I turn to piracy.. I do try to make my piracy "enjoyable" to at least a subset of the traders in Open (ganking is the most boring gameplay ever IMO), but given the choice, I rather just have a combat-related CG every week in parallel with the traders so that I can enjoy real combat in a populated system with like-minded mates.

Try a shielded double braced fsd.
Yeah u lose range most of my smugglers and combat ships have em. Either double braced or thermal or monstered etc but shielding the fsd in combat is a good idea.
Armoured pp too.
Shielded life support or reinforced if powers an issue. You can buff range with a guardian fsd booster set to mode 4 when weapons are deployed so it shuts down when in combat..
You can offset over burdened power plant simply by selecting mode 4 in module screen so when you deploy weps the mode 4 stuff downpowers, cargo scoop, guardian fsd booster, fuel scoop etc so even if your 104% pp it'll still deploy weps without losing other things like shield boosters etc.
The build is everything.
Squeezing in as much as is possible to make combat easier... more survivable.
I too wish there was more substance to potential pvp, than just the current mindless gank romp that exists today.
Thankfully most have left elite. But it's the games pvp mechanics that are at fault.
Law n order, accountability, imbalanced, block feature etc.

I'll hit you with the TL;DR up front. Open is the best mode, PvP is fun, and these past two days have been dynamic and engaging.

Now, if you're still here; I've been out exploring on my main account since late December and have been out of human contact since that time. A few weeks back, having relegated the Battle for Carcossa to the pages of history, I dumped my last few tonnes of biowaste outside the Rock and loaded my alt up on a carrier and came back to the Bubble. This week's combat CG in Kumo-Land caught my eye and so I trundled out here in a moderately engineered Anaconda set up for PvE.

Once in system, I noticed the same folks in system chat that are always gathered for CG's. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. One in particular is notorious for griefing and PK'ing. This time around he was RP'ing as fighting for Trask. Fair play to him. We all know who he is and what he's up to. No ill will at all. Blaze your own trail, CMDR. So I pack off into a Medium CZ and get to work mowing through NPC's. I'm fairly average in combat. I can handle myself, but I'm not terribly dangerous to anything other than an NPC. I've only ever killed one other CMDR, and he was in an SRV.

I say all that to say that about half way through the fight, I noticed my shields are dropping faster than I feel like they should. It is at that point I realize that I am being attacked by a hollow red triangle. You guessed it, that guy. I flip around and start targeting him. He's already down to no shields and 34% hull. I can do this, right? I managed to whittle him down a few percentage points when two other CMDR's wing up with me and go after him. He decides to boost and low wake. We pursue and I - of all people - manage to out maneuver him in supercruise and interdict him....but I failed the interdiction and he got away. I thanked the guys for the wing and headed to bed.

Tonight, I see the same CMDR prowling supercruise space near one of the CZ's. Feeling full of myself, I decide to interdict him again but he makes it into the CZ before I have a chance. I drop in behind him and immediately go agro on him....only to have my butt handed to me. He's in a meta built PvP FdL and I'm in a PvE Anaconda with efficient beams and overcharged multicannons. Believe it or not, I manage to stay in the fight for a good few minutes and schwack 20% off his shields. He's all over me. I can't maneuver to get many shots. He's flying FA Off and I'm clearly out flown. About this time, a wing of CMDR's jump into the CZ and I message them asking for help. My thrusters go offline. I repair/reboot. They come back on line. I boost away and try to highwake. FSD fails. 18% hull. Repair/Reboot. 7% hull. FSD charging. FSD failed. "Anybody out there that can help me?" 2% hull. When all of sudden a Corvette in onionhead paint rockets across my screen, rails blazing. And then I see a Krait Mk2. And then another Krait...and then a wing invite.

And then ship went boop. Eject! Eject! Eject!

I spawn in Crimson Whateveritis to a message from the wing, apologizing that they couldn't save me but said CMDR who made ship go boop is dead now, too. I thank them and immediately fly back out. We all share a wing mission with each other and go to work. A few minutes later, the PK'er is back. All four of us break contact with the NPC's and swarm him. His ship went boop in about 45 seconds. "Romi's Revenge!" was the yop heard in system chat from the three random CMDR's that came to my aid.

80mil CR, a rollicking good time, and some real emergent and electrifying game play.

Try Open(or don't.) It's better out here!

Fly aimless, CMDR's. o7
This is the way.

For how easy they say it's to get trade elite that is quite a low quota. The average player doesnt even reach that.

I wouldn't mind as much if opposing players were "taking it seriously" rather than indulging in shenanigans.

It was fun back when life was simple and an attacker was simply somebody who was "fighting for the other team".
These days I seem to constantly meet people who're more intent on simply ruining my day than actually accomplishing any goal of their own. 🤷‍♂️

I can see where this point of view comes from, but why even worry yourself with the presumed intent of the other person?
Bear in mind that any assumption on your part of their negative intentions is automatically a negative judgement that you will bear. This is the game, how it was designed, NPC pirates will gang up on you and destroy you in no time if you let them, and you will quickly be killed for loitering - what were the intentions of the game designers? Then there is the BGS: you spend months tending to your favored factions, only for all your work to be destroyed in a few days by another bigger player group who you can’t even see.
Wasn’t my intention to psych-analyse you by the way ;-)
