Sorry to bring this one back, but there was an interesting P.O.L.R related example from the new Call of Duty here. They're finally adding female avatars to the multiplayer, but the character models all have to be the same size. It will be interesting to see if that looks a bit odd... The rationale is that smaller characters would provide harder targets, which would unbalance the game.

Makes sense. It needs a level playing field. It's a direct element.

btw, were skin and hair tones customisable in the game before? I'm guessing not from the description. Does being a darker/lighter colour in certain settings give you an advantage, I wonder?

Having never really played the game beyond a few quick goes at someone else's house, I wouldn't know. I guess that with the tiny amount of flesh on show in combat gear, probably not though. Also, the lighter skinned folk can probably wear camo'd face-paint.
