The Powerplay discussion thread.

The point is to strengthen and expand the reach of a Power you pledge allegiance to. This will (hopefully) result in exciting roleplaying opportunities for players and devs, and emergent gameplay for those who don't care about RP.

You get rewards in the form of a weekly credit allowance with some added perks depending on the Power, and based on how much you contributed toward Preparation, Expansion, Control and Undermining in the past four weeks. What these four actions mean in practice is in the official PP manual and guide I linked to earlier.

Thanks but I was wondering about what powerplay is for, not the reputation system.

My eyes just glazed over trying to read through that long instructional chart posted above....... I just want to fly my ship, make money and blow stuff up. I think I'll stick with that instead of getting wrapped up in a long, boring fantasy/sci-fi comic book.

Some just want to pew-pew - you can continue to pew-pew.. PP is just another game option.

Personally, only briefly touched on it over the weekend but find it intriguing... and I shall fight for my lady Duval...

Must say (again), I played some games in my time (since late 80's) but I have never - ever - stumbled upon something as impenetrable as ED's Powerplay system. I'd like to be able to come up with an equivalent but in all honesty, nothing comes even close!

edit: Attack of the Mutant Penguins on the Atari Jaguar! There. I found one.

Have you played anything by Paradox Games? Europa Universalis and such make PP look like Twister.

So, take a new player who just bought the game. He doesn't know much about the game, but he's shelled out $65 and is hyped about all this pp talk , so he joins a faction right off the bat. He can play 10-hours each weekday and maybe 8-10 hours on weekends; let's just say 20-hours a week. He's got the Sidewinder starter ship and wants to progress up to bigger and better ships. How does he do that in PP?

Simple: You do not need PP for that at all.
PP is just a new political dimension on top of a blue collar universe.
You can ignore the PP layer if you only care about bigger and better ships.

I don't think the underlying strategic elements are that complex, really. People tend to exaggerate for effect online, and there's a bit of that going on here. There is probably a way to package what is already here that would be friendlier to the "strategically-challenged" though, and I've made my own suggestions. Writing it off as a failure already (as some appear to have done) is jumping the gun a bit!

I wasn't talking about the Reputation system. I was talking of PP in general, and Merits/Rating.

I know, here we go again with the lingo :p Reputation is a separate thing than Merit, and Merit is used to build Rating.

Argh, I'm not making this any clearer!

Thing is, I'm not really sure how strategic any of this is. We might have a very small effect as part of the larger community, but it's not like we can individually plan huge galaxy-conquering strategies. We just do fetch quests. It's harder to understand than something like CIV and yet has barely any tactical interest at all.

I also think it's a bad for "immersion" (sorry) as it doesn't really reflect how I imagine dealing with factions/powers would actually be. Han Solo doesn't look at a screen on the Millennium Falcon that tells him how many CC points the Rebellion has, he interacts with colourful characters with their own agendas and a rich backstory emerges from that.

I like the mechanics of Powerplay, but I don't think the player should be aware of all the numbers going up and down. We should be interacting with NPCs and other players.

I'm with you on this however, I thank this thread because I now understand. The problem was not knowing what to do but I think what was lacking in any of the videos and tutorials was a sense of PURPOSE. WHY are we doing this, WHY would this benefit me, WHY would this benefit my power, and WHY is my power doing that? Once people understand the bigger picture, then it will make sense.

I spent hours upon hours trying to figure this out but got more confused (looked at all the tutorials and videos etc.). But then today. because of this thread I found what I missed. I went into the Galactic Powers menu from the target panel, selected "view power standing" box, then selected a power. I found something that I did not notice before; In the bottom right corner of the screen, there was a "help" button. It answered all my questions. How did I miss it?!!?? Maybe this will help others.

Well, you can't wag the dog on your own, that's true. I think that's fair enough though - there are hundreds of thousands of players, and only 10 factions at this point. We can't expect to take command. We can choose where we go and what we do, though, so there's that. I think the interface could probably be tweaked to make it a bit more idiot-proof, so we can instantly differentiate danger and opportunities from wastes of time. I don't have any decent suggestions on that front though at present. It's already pretty straightforward, once you get over the unfamiliarity of a new bit of the game suddenly appearing - but maybe tooltips and some form of interactive tutorial (rather than a video) would be a good move for new Powerplayers.

I agree with the number-heavy bit. The thing is, there are numerous players who would complain vociferously if it wasn't all a set of cold hard numbers and progress bars. They actually want spreadsheets in space. When the devs politely told the players that they'd like to keep the minor faction mechanics somewhat opaque from a player perspective, there were large groups of players who made concerted efforts to pull back the curtain and lay all that stuff bare. So you would annoy that crowd if you cloaked the raw data behind colourful characters and hid it in newsfeed articles and bulletin board missions.

it fits into the "mile wide - inch deep" concept because basically I do the same as before.

Yes, I agree. But still I like the extra political dimension very much. I really enjoy it. It helps to give a face to the Elite universe and I feel it is a great foundation to build upon. That is what FD will do. You are witnessing the slow (and sometimes painful for some) creation of the Elite Dangerous universe.

i'd prefer planets instead, I want FE2

Yes, absolutely. Who doesn't? I long to see how planetary landings will be done with this level of graphical fidelity; entering an atmosphere, putting your ship down at a planetary base... it will be awesome. I want that very much. We all have our preferences and we will have to let FD develop the game as they see fit.
