The problem with typing in VR ...

... is that I think about it too much!

I'm actually a decent touch-typist, but I apparently require an occasional glance at the keyboard. And the little bumps on most F & J keys are so small these days that I can barely feel them. So first it takes forever to get my hands in the correct position, and then I start wondering where some letters are that I usually just type w/o thinking. And don't get me started on the number keys, which I never learned. [where is it] Then I invariably press some wrong keys, and I get paranoid I'll hit the return key instead of backspace, and then get all mixed up and can't find the correct keys for the life of me. [knocked out]

I guest it's just going to take practice, practice, practice.

On the Rift there is that wee gap below the nose to sneak a look with your lights on. I pilot with keys/mouse so I'm mostly touching them. I also use lots of VoiceAttack binds for Fastest Speed and panels and targeting modules etc. I don't always get it right but if I can not turn then I must be one set of keys off hehe!

There is http://www.hellov.io/ which also has a popup keyboard. My system is not powerful enough for the 90fps to use this but it works for Browsers and other APPs within your HUD.

Oh and then there's Virtual Desktop if you like to Alt/TAB to switch to your desktop although I'm not sure the HMD changes to this from ED!

Try gluing sand onto your keys ;)

Personally I hope Frontier is going to add a 'local' voice chat, which would allow VR/hotas and normal users to talk together easier.

Yeah, I really only have the problem in text chat.

A local voice chat, kind of like unicom in planes, would be nice and social, but you'd probably need to turn it off in CGs. But normally there is just the 2 players in the instance.

Put a little velcro square on F and J key. The plastic rigid side of it. Thank me later

I did away with my keyboard completely, it was such a pain in VR. I use voice attack and works great. I can even dictate my text chats, by spoken words and/or by phonetic alphabet!

This sounds really interesting actually. I use VoiceAttack a tiny bit, but only to model keyboard/button macros that drive ED Toolbox functions (e.g. to read out galnet news articles to me). I always felt like a bit of a saying things like "deploy landing gear" out loud so I never used it in that way.

So the Oculus has a built in microphone. Does this mean I could use VoiceAttack to convert my speach into text that can end up in the chat window? If so a) wow and b) how?

Problem for ME when it comes to typing in Vr is that I do not sit in front of a desk, so my keyboard isn't in a fixed position, and trying to find the right keys blind can be a bit of trial and error.

I've said this before, what VR really needs is an iPad(ish) sized touch input panel it can recognise and display as a panel in game. Have sensors on the corners so it can display a touch keyboard (or anything else) in game.

YES. In voice attack I make a command for "dictation" , which basically has a script to open dictation, then set a 4 second pause timer, and then to paste whatever has just been dictated. So when I'm in the in-game text chat window, I simply say "dictation" followed by whatever I want to say within 4 seconds, and voila it appears in my test chat box.
I also include in the script to say back some feedback to me like "you may commence dictation now" and "dictation stopped" to have an idea where the script actually is in real-time.
Also, I've made commands for "erase", "back" incase of errors. On top of that I also made commands for numbers and phonetics. For ex: "alpha" will spit out the letter A. This helps when voice attack is having trouble with dictating a specific word, so I just have it spell out. This works great too by the way when searching for a system in the galaxy map.
Also, realize you can train the windows speech software and add to the dictionary using your voice for the words having trouble being recognized. Voice attack uses what windows speech recognition software learns. At least this is the way for windows 10.

Brilliant - thank you!

Yeah, I added some bumps to my old keyboard. Then I got a tenkeyless to squeeze between my joystick & throttle. Now I'm trying to find something to stick on some keys.
Thanks for the reminder.

I've been meaning to look into using VA for text chat for a year now, but I never seem to find the time.
Maybe I should just quit my job to free up some time. Hmmm, maybe I'll wait to see what happens with Season 3.

Can anybody tell me how to select a system while in the galaxy map? (While using VR)
I can move around the G/map no problem, & type in a destination to plot a route, it's just can't work out how to select systems.
Many thanks in advance

Are you using a joystick/hotas and do you have you interface mode keybinds defined? You know, for moving around panels and etc?

So you move the cursor around the map. If you can't see the map cursor (not the mouse cursor), you need to tilt the plane. Each system sun will have a line going up or down to a little blue disc. When you move the map cursor near one of the discs, it should snap to it. Then press the select button (or spacebar by default) to select the system. You should also be able to navigate the system panel to plot a route, place a bookmark, and open the system map.

Thanks for that info Cliche,
I am using a Hotas set up, & I have it set up, so I can move around the main cockpit panels.
I can use my hotas to make selections on the G/map, & also use the mouse, to zoom in/out & rotate the G/map etc, but I'm having difficulty working out how to select random systems when viewing the G/map.
I know what you mean when talking about the little blue disk thing, but they are not always visible, have I deselected something?
& how do I get the mouse to highlight a system when I hover over it, like it did before I started using VR?
Cheers mate, I do appreciate your help on this matter as it's proving a bit frustrating.

If the blue disk thing is not visible you probably have to zoom in a bit.
Mouse is not working like in 2D, so hovering over a system does not work,
it's only there to use with the galaxy map menu's but I don't use a mouse at all
since I use hotas buttons to do that.
You get a system highlighted by moving the 'map cursor' on the blue disk thing.

Cheers Dree, I can zoom right in, but no disk thing.
The mouse works the zoom/rotate feature in the G/map.
Is the 'map cursor' a mouse pointer or a circle?
