Ten minutes in to the video and I'm beginning to think you're full of bunk, Roybe.

Dav's been talking about, best I can tell, computer and network programming for the past few minutes. He's obviously laying the foundation for wherever this video is going to go, but, you know what?

I'm not an expert in this stuff. It's all gibberish to me. If this was somehow supposed to eloquently and forcefully prove your point that Solo and Private Group efforts can't be kept from influencing the BGS influence numbers and PowerPlay numbers then I'm afraid it's stumbling pretty hard out of the gate.

Which leads me to something else.

You said yourself it explains things better than you could. Now I'm wondering if you even understand what you're talking about which leads me to conclude your conclusions on the matter are probably spurious at best.

So, tell me this: why should I keep watching? Currently paused at 9:15, for the record.

I'm glad you said that, Bob.

It's almost like he expected me to be utterly and completely overwhelmed by the volume of words (I've skipped ahead a few minutes at a time and still haven't seen a word about the BGS, modes, or anything of that matter) that I would just bow to their alleged supremacy.

And, to be fair, I'm learning a lot right now but I don't think it was the kind of things Roybe hoped I might.

Don't look at the man behind the curtain!

The whole point of the video is an explanation of how the game works, subsystem by subsystem, and how they used Google's server offering to make their game do what it does. I can make generalized statements...that you might or might not believe...and all I can do is point you to these factual technical explanations as to why they are true. There is no heading in the video...THIS is the game, and its design...because everything after the Stellar Forge discussion IS the Background simulation.

Again, I can only point at the gist, that the BGS is the game overlay to the Stellar Forge, that 'modes' are only choices people make for interaction, and the game is not built to discern player activity between themselves...only what PVE tokens they move in the Game. Not only that the BGS is manipulated by players...that it really is the whole game...and if there was a way to limit people's activity with it, it would, literally, remove parts of the game from them.

Looks like I finally got to the good stuff.

Y'all watch this, and tell me what you think best supports what Dav is talking about here: Open Only BGS and PowerPlay or the status quo?

https://youtu.be/EvJPyjmfdz0?t=38m15s

Here's where it gets really interesting.

You know where I've found the most compelling and intense player driven stories, the kind that has made Elite: Dangerous the greatest gaming experience of my life?

Open play.

Because you know what Elite is to me? It's not whatever pathetic version you and the rest of the Forum NPCs have conjured up in your minds. It's not the tin pot rhetorical dictatorship you blabber on about at every opportunity.

It's this:

Yeah I wonder why they dont advertise that BGS or PP wars are not happening in the battlefield but instead, its a grind competition between private groups who don't see each other.

Where is the trailer for this? Doesnt exist! I guess because it would as exciting as watching paint dry.

Did you miss the discussion part of 'buckets' in your first post? Buckets only recognize PVE trophies...glad you are understanding the reasons for PVP not counting!

And your second example means that, yes, they expect a bottleneck at CG's...but they also expect people to access those same buckets whatever their choice for interaction.

The BGS is not separable from the 'modes'....

They want the bottlenecks...appreciate that some people will get together for pew pew...but this does not break their singular goal of letting everyone have access to filling up their respective PVE bucket.

Again, to both of you, PVE buckets move the BGS...the entire game. PVP has no bucket....and is not part of the design. Removing access to buckets removes access to the game!

So, play as you will...Open or otherwise...but limiting things to Open..or conversely to Solo...means someone loses access to the game.

I'm done with you, Roybe.

At this stage, I don't care whether or not Frontier can do anything about the modes in regards to BGS and PP because you know what me and mine can do?

Influence the culture of the community around the modes.

So, thanks for that revelation I guess? Anyway, it's been fun.

The modes section had a related discussion.

Would you be happy with a feature in Q4, that involved new gameplay and new mechanisms geared towards PvP only, added on to the system as it is in place right now?

FINALLY! Now you're playing Elite: Dangerous! Just remember, it's ok to be Pro-Open! You just have to remember how the game is designed to push that agenda! All I ever want from people!

The 'modes' are not unfair..as the only way to push the BGS is through PVE trophy movement! You want to do yours from Open...and convince people that PVE trophy movement can matter in Open...go for it!

Not interested in that discussion.
Not planning to have that, but you talked about influencing the culture of the community.

There's more support across the board for added mechanics as opposed to limiting existing mechanics. And at the end of the day, you want fun meaningful PvP. So my point simply was, you'll get more support for your cause if that's the case.

Hoever, unless the PVP people have some sort of access to the BGS...there is always going to be a substandard feel to that gameplay.

Why would I listen to either of you at this stage? Lol.

You seem to understand the problem..and have stated a goal...but if you are going to follow the same tact, then you have just wasted all your time here. Good luck.

And rather than ask to remove PVE buckets from any mode, why not ask for some kind of PvP bucket?

Seriously, even if everyone is in open you will not be able to stop everyone affecting your PF/BGS/PP instancing alone as well as not knowing who your enemies (known and unknown) prevents you from stopping them.

Of course thinking of something that would work for the entire player base is too hard so you try to eliminate the part of the player base that is not PvP oriented. I like PvP and PvE I would hate to loose those options.

(Sorry Roybe not directed at you)

LOL! Let's not get into real possible solutions here...you know, because that's addressing an issue!

<putting on tin foil hat>

Makes you wonder why this wasn't included in the base design, right? Couldn't be the devs do not really want to support PVP, could it? Five years into the development and counting?
