I thought the route planner was 100Ly, or thereabouts. It plans all routes out in a bubble though, so if you're doing max range then it takes a long time to draw all the lines in before you can select the 'map route' option on your destination. The other thing to check is that you're setting the map to fastest route, not most economical.
Took my Asp with 30LY jump range out to the Orion nebular and the route planner could calculate up to 150LY at times because the density of stars (amount of stars in let's say an area of a 50x50LY square) was so low. As soon as I got into the actual nebular where there are a LOT of stars, the calculation slowed down so much, you couldn't use it at all (check around EZ Orionis on your map, you can see what I mean and why it happens).
So yeah, definitely would like to have an actual planner that lets you select a star and ONLY plan the route to that. I mean that's how nav systems in cars work, don't they? If I want to visit a nearby city, I don't have to wait for 5 minutes until my system actually lets me select a route because it calculated ways to every city in 100km range, do I?
