The Route planner discussion thread

The current route planner does a lot of unnecessary work. I want to put in a destination 1000 LY or more away and have it give me a single efficient route with the least number of hops. Whoever thought that the current system of route planning was a good idea should be ashamed of themselves.

It's a pity the RP isn't a little bit more involved. Han Solo made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs (which is a unit of measurement, not time). It would be cool to
be able to do something like that.

I have problems with route planner also! I have a laden jump range of 18 ly but when asking the planner for fastest route for a 14 ly it puts me to 6 different systms! V wierd as it can reach in 1 jump! Friend in same Asp with similar jump the route planner works while my system it doesnt! Normally there is no difference between fastest and eco route!

I expect that there must be some other factor influencing the planner, as I've found it's been working as designed lately. (In fact, it even perhaps seems a tad quicker than it used to be.)
Selecting faster / economical route causes the expected re-calculation to take place (though the old route will stay in place until you select any new route).
Unless I'm in a big rush I tend to stick with economical anyway, as it saves plenty on fuel and you can pick up cash from discoveries on the way.

The route in it's current state works backwards. First it's using the Nav map listing at the root. Everytime you jump into a jump, the first 20ly are background pre-planned so that 'something' appears in the nav listing console. The problem is that the Galaxy map used that at it's starting point to map stars beyond.

I'm not saying to forget about the Nav console listing, it's design is fine. However opening the Galaxy should let me define how the route planner does the route mapping by the destination I choose. The process of slow mapping close by systems works well for quick system hoping, but long range the algorithm it wrong and cumbersome.

If the mapping went back from the destination to the source, then it would be more efficient. User is at point A, selects point B in the map, and the algorithm works back to front. It's current state is...backwards.

I would bet most of us enter the map with a destination in mind--or after using the map to scan resources, we have a destination in mind. It'd be far faster to start the calculations after you tell it where you want to go, to eliminate all of the extraneous routing you don't need. Kind of like what cmdr.club/routes already does today.

Anythings else I would buy a fuel scoop but in a sidewinder the fuel is so cheap put more cargo in to pay for fuel! If flying lots fuel scoop alway! I have opened a ticket for my planner, was on Team speak with an other asp same spec and planets and it works for him!

This could actually be a bug.

There is a fix. Move the folder:

C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Player to a backup location. ED will recreate the Player folder on startup.

This fixed my bugged out navigation routing.

Couple of threads about it:

After installing A-type FSD on my Asp and starting my trek towards Sagittarius A*, I have to retract my statement. The node generation times have SIGNIFICANTLY risen with the new 30ly jump range compared to the previous 20ly. I don't know how long it would take to generate the full spiderweb as I no longer have the patience, as soon as I can generate a route for ~90ly away, I'll punch it and continue my journey inwards.

"plot route" malfunction?

If i click on plot routr, it plans my way nicely - at least at first glance.
But as i inspect the route, it seems it makes me do unnecessary jumps.
Just ignores possible jumping opportunities and tries to make me do some parts with 1 or 2 more jumps.
For example, i could go from V1688 Aquilae to Brani with 2 jumps, but instead os setting my route as "V1688-Verbigeni-Brani", it sets as "V1688-Verbigeni-Ceramix-Brani".
It doesn't matter is i set it to fastest or economical, i get the same result.
Is it possible, that 2 jumps are better in any way then 1 longer, direct jump?

If you go to navigation, you will see an option for either economic or fastest route.

The first tries to save fuel and the second will give you the big jumps which is quicker :D

Edit:
And thats what I get for speed reading a post and replying... now if only there was a delete feature LoL

I have had this happen before with longer routes but only because all jump points where not fully loaded yet, sometimes it takes awhile for all of them to load.

Could be a glitch in that certain spot but not really sure on the matter. Would love to see them add a way to do a manual route planner.

It happens all the time, even if that's just a 12-15 lyr distance.
Yeah, that would be fine to make manual planning, like Shift+Click to add new waypoint.
But the best would be to have a proper route planner - am i really smarter than my nav computer? in 3301? (ok, ill be very old in 3301, but... :) )

Hi Yale, I had the same problem a few weeks ago and Zananan helped with this very helpful piece of advice:

Got the same thing, try deleting custom.misc (you can make a backup, it's unnecessary though) in C:\Users\(User)\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Player

Fixes it reliably for me, note that you might have to redo that every time before launching the game. Bit of a band aid, but what more than ticketing it can we do.

Hope this fixes it for you, I constantly had to delete the custom.misc file but then renamed the entire folder and it worked fine for around 3 weeks, but since last update I have to delete that file every time I play now. Hope this info helps, once again thanks Zananan.

ah, an interesting one, thank you, i'll give it a try!
if it works fine, i'll just create a launch script to do the dirty work for me ;)

EDIT: No joy :(
From Pices to LHS3564 i can make it with 2 jumps. Yet, it plans 4 jumps. Duh... :-/
But thanks anyway!

Eravate Rares Route?

I read here the other day about an eravate rares trade route. Well now i have my Cobra i fancied seeing more of the Milky Way and trying rares. But i cant find the post even after searching. On http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ it doesn't even mention eravate having rares so i'm a bit confused.

No Eravate doesn't have rares, or AFAIK be anywhere near a rares route. Most of the good routes use Lave as there are 4 rares within 10ly. I prefer a simple route from lave to coquim, it's not too dull. Have tried the full 71 stop salesman route, and did about half of it before getting bored (over a day}

Route planning for explorations

How did you guys go so far already? Ive been to the Coak sack neb which isnt really that far and it was a total pain in the bum finding my way where due to a lack of route planning. I know they are introducing a new route planner in the next update but how did you do it before?

I don't really plan a route as such, I just head out in the general direction of a target and slowly but surely get closer to it.

Getting to the target is not the main thing though, it's about the journey too. Many wonders are to be found before you get there.
