Indeed - I could wail and gnash my teeth that Lotro is advertised as an MMO - yet I can't sit in the Shire or Bree (or anywhere else) and whack noobs all day to show off my l33t skllzor. Lotro must not be an MMO! Gaem needs pew pew and lazors or will die! ;)

No I did not go back 3 years worth of data reading everything before I bought the game! to expect as much is preposterous!

Yep I never disagreed with you on that point. We just disagreed if it is the "fine print" or not!
I still think it is the "fine print" and even more so after my control F search for single player turned up ZERO matches on the ED main page.
You can argue all you want but I am only listing the facts! I have not attempted any word play or trickery to make my point (cough)

From these forums:

FAQ- Elite: Dangerous
Where can I pledge to Elite: Dangerous?

You can pledge to Elite: Dangerous on Kickstarter here or by PayPal here

Can you release “Elite” on the (iPhone/iPad/Console/Mac/Linux/Oculus Rift/Raspberry Pi) platform?
Yes. It would be great. The PC version comes first though, and then we will look at the demand for other platforms. If the game exceeds its target, then there will be scope to increase the number of platforms. We will discuss with the backers in the design discussion forum, and how to address the issues that will arise, but I have every hope that we will cover some or all of these platforms. (Link)

Will you have Newtonian physics in the game?
Yes. The degree of the fly-by-wire to override the feeling of skidding is something we will carefully tune.(Link)

Will I be able to speed up time?
No, not in the sense that “Frontier” allowed you to travel huge distances in a short period of time. Instead we plan to use ‘local hyperspace’ travel. This is because time has to stay locked between the players (otherwise multiplayer doesn’t work). (Link)

Will space be blue?

No, it will be black, with a rich, realistic-looking star field and other background objects. The reason I had the background blue in “Frontier” was so that the planets could be seen as dark against a brighter background – but on some people’s screens it looked awful. It was supposed to reflect the rich mass of background stars. (Link)

How will single player work? Will I need to connect to a server to play?
The galaxy for Elite: Dangerous is a shared universe maintained by a central server. All of the meta data for the galaxy is shared between players. This includes the galaxy itself as well as transient information like economies. The aim here is that a player's actions will influence the development of the galaxy, without necessarily having to play multiplayer.

The other important aspect for us is that we can seed the galaxy with events, often these events will be triggered by player actions. With a living breathing galaxy players can discover new and interesting things long after they have started playing.

Update! The above is the intended single player experience. However it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server. You won't get the features of the evolving galaxy (although we will investigate minimising those differences) and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again we'll investigate).

Does the £750 tier include a +1 to the UK launch party?
Yes it does!

How will the Star System named after me work? Will there therefore be five star systems with the same name?
For those who get to name star systems or space stations, the name will be your choice, within reason. It does not have to be precisely your name – it could be your nickname or something else (within reason). So if your name were John Smith, it could be Smithworld, John Smith, Smithy’s Station, JS Station, and so on. Some have asked if it could be named after a relative who is no longer with us. All these things are possible. It should be something that isn’t offensive, or legally we cannot use without permission, or has some other problem (so if your name is Coca Cola, then maybe you might want to use your nickname!). If you are naming multiple systems, then we ask that you choose a different variant – so they are not identical. For the star systems there will be scope for a sentence, appearing on the system information in the game – for example “This system was first discovered by the famous explorer John Smith, who came from Paris, Texas, Earth”. This sentence should be no more than about twenty or so words, and should fit the character of the game, and will be agreed with you. If we cannot agree then a standard sentence (like the one given here) will be used.

Will the game br DRM-free?
Yes, the game code will not include DRM (Digital Rights Management), but there will be server authentication when you connect for multiplayer and/or updates and to synchronise with the server.

Speed of Communication
Players will be able to communicate directly with each other. This has to be done instantaneously, otherwise we think it would be very frustrating. Space is truly huge, so an inter-system distance would mean delays of several years or more if we were being realistic!

How does multiplayer work?
You simply play the game, and depending on your configuration (your choice) some of the other ships you meet as you travel around are real players as opposed to computer-controlled ships. It may be a friend you have agreed to rendezvous with here, or it may be another real player you have encountered by chance. All players will be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” – that is how they are distinguished from non-players – so you will be able to tell who is a player and who is a non-player easily.

You will be able to save your position in certain key places (probably just in space stations, but possibly while in hyperspace too, if we feel it is needed). A save-and-quit option will be freely available at those points, as will the subsequent reload, but there will be a game cost for a reload following player death. Your ship will still be intact in the condition it was when the save occurred, but there will be a game currency charge (referred to as an insurance policy) for this. This is to prevent the obvious exploit of friends cooperating and killing each other to get each other’s cargo. If you can’t pay, then it will accumulate as an in-game debt, and the police may chase you!

There are no multiplayer lobbies, and the game will be played across many servers, augmented by peer-to-peer traffic for fast responses. Session creation and destruction happens during the long-range hyperspace countdown and hyperspace effect (which is a few seconds only), so is transparent to the player.

We have the concept of “groups”. They can be private groups just of your friends or open groups (that form part of the game) based on the play styles people prefer, and the rules in each can be different. Players will begin in the group “All” but can change groups at will, though it will be possible to be banned from groups due to antisocial behaviour, and you will only meet others in that group.

How do we plan to address PvP (player vs player) “griefing”?
An obvious danger is an advanced player with a big well-armed ship in a busy system spends their time just picking off beginners, for fun.

To understand how this will be stopped requires a little bit of understanding how real player ships will be treated slightly differently to non-player ships. Players will automatically be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” and will be identified as such, together with their ranking and name. Bounties are paid by this Federation – something that is therefore much higher for those that kill other Federation members. It will be balanced so that this cannot be used as an exploit (so a beginner killing a beginner is taken less seriously than an Elite pilot killing a beginner – it will be based on the ranking difference).

There are four separate ways we will address this:

1. The offender will very quickly get a serious price on their head (bounty) and criminal record. That price on their head will attract bounty hunters.

2. Local police or military will respond very quickly and strongly to them.

3. It will be legitimate for other players to attack them for the attractive bounty without attracting a bounty for themselves, as once there is a bounty on their head they are officially a pirate and ‘free game’ for everyone.

4. If enough players complain about the offender's behaviour in a certain time, then they will be banned from this group

according to his argument, LOTRO, WOW, SWTOR.. none of those games are MMOs.. they have instancing, separate servers, people are not all playing together.. so they can't be MMO. I tried to correct his presumption but .. you can only lead someone to knowledge, you can't make em think.

Oh Alone means SOLO MODE. that is really reaching!
Going into an MMO alone always has been always will be an option. I
It says you can "go it alone" NOT You can play alone!!
There is a difference and a clear one. Attempting word play is not the same as proving your point!

I don't know, fly alone or with friends is pretty clear to me. It's not exactly the most complex contextual statement.

That's assuming of course that flying with friends indicates multi-player.

Because they have insanely high expectations for how all players should act that isn't realistic of any online game ever made?

Straw man argument. Perhaps they have been in those other online games ever made - and decided they didn't want to include the Reavers in their gameplay.

<snip>

Sure we may affect markets but thats just another random variation to consider and thus should make your open more real as we are in effect emulating the people you cannot control anyways.

I have been saying this for awhile here; good to know others think about it too. The "invisible people" are just another random variable.

Mouse;2706758]In all seriousness you need to play a different game. All you do is bellyache how bad ED is... when is isn't at all. It clearly is not the game for you.
it is not horrible, it is just not that particularly interesting! But it has potential and that is why I am going nowhere. I have high hopes for it in the future!

I don't play solo often, I play Mobius, I like to say Hi to Bob and not worry about Bob blowing me up because he needs entertained .

The vision and Dream of ED is what we are playing, if you can't get that .. it isn't my fault
No one said it is your fault.
I could care less about the advertised "vision" I think I already made my point regarding their advertising tactics!

If other camp is those that feel that their way of playing is the only right way and want to force others to play then YES they are bloody Obstinate!
I have been called worse :)

I don't have what I want.. I'd like a PVE only Open mode.. but if it comes it comes, if not I will continue to work with what is available in game. Oh and you are way off with your MMO/PVP/group comment.. for one I AM a MMO/Group player.. and I have nothing against PVP unless they try to force it on me.. Which is why I am not in Open. And it is clear you still have no flipping clue as to what MMO means... you think MMO means EVE.. it doesn't .. there is a WIDE RANGE of games that are considered MMO.. surprisingly even ED.
I never played EVE so clearly I don't think MMO means EVE
PVE open is what you want but you have Mobius? I mean exactly what you want maybe not but pretty darn close IMO

When have I said no changes and everyone shut up? Please find those for me... there is a HUGE difference in asking for change and utterly changing the game to pander to a few.. that is what I'm against
I never said you said that, but it is the general tone I get from the responses!
Now I am getting don't go away mad, just go away! You didn't say that either hence there is no quotes around it! I am still getting that impression though!

Your whole argument doesn't have a single basis of fact in it.. about me, about the game, heck even about the ED community.. maybe you should READ the threads instead of assuming as to what they say

I am reading them. that is how I am able to respond to them.
Hmm where I stated something was a fact I posted screen shots as support, where I stated my opinion I require no facts!

I would bet and am betting that ED is a corporation and as a corporation they will seek out the max profits from the market. In order to do this they will try to reach the MMO market ( they are already doing this) and when they have reached enough of them Ed will cater to them just as they are catering to the console market with CQC. Vision or no vision. I could be wrong but time will tell.
I think you know and realize this and this is what makes the solo crowd so hostile (not you specifically just in general)

BTW. Where are all the threads hating on CQC? You solo guys have to know as Robert keeps pointing out that any dev time spent on multiplayer CQC stuff is taking coding time away from solo stuff!

I hit control F (find) on the main page

So, despite you seeing something like this game's solo mode as a deal breaker, you purchase a full price game after only a cursory look at its main page, without due research? You have a specific requirement for the game and you don't look at its forums, at the game's Steam page, at its Kickstart page, developer interviews, no other source of information before purchasing it? And then, instead of accepting you didn't do proper research, you demand that the game be changed to fit what you thought the game would be?

BTW, can you point at a single place where it was said that PvP would be unavoidable? Or that you would be able to meet with everyone? In this day and age where games like The Crew, Destiny, War Thunder, and even mostly single player experiences like The Mighty Quest For Epic Loot are advertised and sold as MMOs, you thought that merely because the game hints at being a MMO it would play more or less like a joystick-enabled version of EVE? Heck, EVE itself is the only MMO with more than a couple thousand players I know of that doesn't use instancing, so the usual expectation in nearly every MMO is to not be able to meet with (or blockade) everyone, even if you don't take into account pesky real life issues like different timezones.

I do agree that the game's home page is severely lacking, that it doesn't have enough information to actually know how the game will play, and for many people not enough information to know if it would be a good match for them or not. But, if you value your money, the correct way to deal with such a lack of essential information should be to seek further information; by blindly purchasing based on something as incomplete as ED's home page is tantamount to gambling.

This topic has been on the forums since before the game came out, you only have your own lack of research to blame.
I've been involved in this debate since November, there was 3 different threads until the mega started in January 2015.

And I can point you to posts in the Kickstart page from less than a week after it started already questioning this. Over two years and half old. It's an old discussion.

Out of curiosity, when did you buy the game? I bought in Dec 26th of last year, and it took me mere minutes of research that that it did include a single player mode, even though it was always online. Which to be honest, didn't bother me at all. I've been Playing Diablo III that way forever now, and now Dragon Age Origins.

For the record, I would not have purchased the game if it was an always multiplayer MMO like WoW. That's not my kind of game. The only multiplayer games I play are first person shooters like COD, where I disable chat and voice.

Mostly because many people on Xbox aren't getting gaming sessions of more than a few minutes before the matchmaker pukes their connection out.

Solo players don't care what open players do or want - as long as it does not unbalance the game or interfere with Solo / Group play, or any other features advertised.
It's open players that want to mess with everyone else - hence this thread.

ROFL, yes clearly I did not do enough research! There is no argument there as if I had done enough research there would be no surprises, none at all.
I did not purchase it at full price, I got it on the Steam sale
I am not buying a house here, I bought a video game! I am not hiring inspectors to inspect the game before purchasing it nor am I spending weeks on research before my purchase. The very idea that I go watch every development video and read every thread page I just find funny. It's $40, I spend that on lunch! Now if I get a bad lunch somewhere I will recover financially from the $40 spent but I still won't recommend that place to my friends!

Just for your edification
I read quite a few steam reviews.
I watched some Youtube video's of the gameplay
I put it on my Steam wish list. Not because I wished for it but I use the wish list as a place to put interesting looking games that I plan to research further.
It went on sale and In the mean time I had finished another game and watched some more Youtube video;s on ED.
I purchased it!

Actually;
Solo play
Starts off in the right direction. You get a starter ship and there are missions available to get the credits to advance in game
From here you can upgrade to
Viper and go the PVP route I find this to be good as you choose a particular path in game and you pick a specific ship to further that goal
Adder ^^
Hauler ^^
From here you can go
Vulture or ASP OK you have your chosen profession and can choose the upgrade ship to be more productive in that task or go another route varying the game play up still good
Now the game looses it's charm as from here
It is a long grind to the
FDL
Python
Type7
No new content presents itself and yet the ship lines continue as does the grind
Anaconda the biggest baddest ship in the game and there is no point to having it other than "to have it"

So based on this I find solo play lacking

So they can add endgame content and this would drastically improve the game play and I would be happy!
They can add guilds and open only mode and player owned space stations and leave the gameplay basically as it, as the interactiveness itself would be added gameplay and I would be happy
They could even add the guild type grouping tools for communication and chat I.E faction chat/Faction voice and have a more coop PVE only open world and I likely enjoy that as well.

I have never said only open mode that is the only way, just that it is one way they could improve the game IMO.

You've jumped the shark now deary. Using that level of informal fallacy and whataboutery is a bit too obvious.

The same Steam that describes the game as:

.... and there's a whole other thread for the topic of Guilds and player owned structures.

Yes yes beat that dead horse some more we already covered the fine print!

.... and there's a whole other thread for the topic of Guilds and player owned structures.

I posted it in this thread as a complete thought and that complete thought relates to the topic of the discussion so therefore the conversation is on topic and it belongs here. Had my post only talked about the topic that is covered in another thread then by all means it is off topic but that is not the case here!
