my guess is that he is suggesting that they make the NPC threats more numerous and/or dangerous.

I like it the way it is now also.

You like that NPC interdictions are about as dangerous/successful as my mum ?
(my mum as a space pirate that is)

I did not meant the expression "fear spread like widlfire" to be insulting, nor calling anyone a coward. I meant that because the constant "griefers everywhere in open" dubious reports, many people that would probably play in open now avoid open not because they were harassed in any way, but because they think that they will be harassed as soon as they login in open.

That video is great, there should be no mercy for cheaters!

I don't think it's that people generally claim that griefers are everywhere- I think what happens is that threads about an individual instance become quite high profile quickly and there are lots of them.

There is a perception amongst some that open is a frag fest when I'd agree it really isn't - apart from very isolated instances (no pun intended) where there is high intense player activity - and these become notorious - but these places can easily be avoided and it's quite possible to survive in them or even be unmolested.

The thing is like Hempstead says, some players are the biggest reason people walk away from open play.
Read the back end of thread 1 in this series and you'll see how many people walk from open - not because anything actually happened, but because of the attitudes of some people.

The likes of some, joining Mobius and then going on a killing spree in Mobius and then gloating about it on the forums repeatedly, or posting videos of glitching through station walls and killing anyone trying to dock,
ram griefing in stations and so on, just makes Elite: Dangerous look like all people do is grief each other.

It is almost as if these people are trying to make open a barren wasteland on purpose - as if they think they will win something for doing it, or as if it will destroy the game.
I think that is why they get so aggressive and forceful when they find out, people just mode jump to avoid them. The player base is still playing - despite their best efforts.
And unless FD step in a deal with them, and stop them trying to make open look and feel like it's full of griefers (and they make a show of it) - groups like Mobius and Solo mode will become more and more popular.

It is a shame such a small handful of people can make one mode look so undesirable, especially when they player base themselves could (but ultimately won't so it seems) deal with them.

I would like to think that people are smarter than that, and that most new players would at least choose to check it out for themselves, but of course there will always be a few who believe the hype.

As I see it the greater risk is that of confirmation bias. If someone goes into Solo for the first time expecting a ganker's paradise and is immediately ganked, no matter how small the probability or how unlucky they were, then they're unlikely to give it a second chance. They'll just believe that all of the rumours were true. And, perhaps more damaging for the game, they may default to believing any future rumours from the same or similar sources.

+1 QFT

For me, a lot of my avoidance of open now boils back to the forums.
Not the odd thread started by someone who played open, was pirated (properly) and is now throwing a hissy fit calling it "griefed". (Those threads make me laugh)

But the attitudes of some of the most fierce open advocates, I don't want to waste my time in game on them.

When the same few people can seriously say;

Open is empty, we should "encourage" people into open,
The modes should be locked because switching is cheating,
Open should be paid more because all the players make it more risky.

So, using a clear lie (the middle one) and a contradiction (top and bottom cannot both be true) to push an agenda - as if we are all dumb enough to actually fall for it. Sorry, but they are people I'm not going to play with.
(And I'm not pointing fingers for the above, but using my links in my Sig you can figure what advocates have used all 3 lines (or similar lines) as their reasons to mess with Solo / Groups)

Now if forum accounts were linked to game accounts, and I could just block people from the forums and ingame in one go - I personally would never have a reason to use Solo or private groups.
But as the block feature in this is borked now (you have to friend someone to block them - FD ???) and you can only chat block them, I'm really not going to bother putting myself in a situation where I may run in to them.
And while I could use other methods to deal with people I don't want to play with, I don't see why I should have to mess about. None of my other games make me mess about to avoid people I don't like.

Solo.
Because the amazon servers are broken, and their matchmaking is broken, if you live anywhere outside USA or EU.
I literally cant even send a chat message to a friend in the main menu, it cant connect. Text. A few bytes of text, cant connect. Ridiculous.
And seeing players in Open has never happened, ever. Even when arranging meetings with friends. Because again, their servers / matchmaking is broken.
I have never played any other online game in my life where i cant even send a chat message.

So thats why, Solo. Its the only mode i can play (i CAN play in Open, but its pointless since i cant see other players, and it leads to more frequent matchmaking disconnects).
So if ED ever decided to remove Solo, or as some people suggest, move powerplay and such into Open only, then i simply wont have a reason / way to play the game anymore.

Elite Dangerous, an amazing game.
Frontier, and amazing dev team.
Amazon Servers, broken pieces of trash that ruins all the hard work of Frontier, and ruins the greatness of Elite Dangerous itself.
What a serious mistake to choose them as the server provider.

I'd agree with that too.

I didn't get properly trounced by a much better player until I had plenty of cash - not because I'm a PVP superhero but because I'd become defacto Elite at avoiding combat - plus having been around since alpha I was used to the idea anyway.

But I still remember that time how things suddenly went south very fast and the feeling of utter helplessness as I couldn't do a damn thing about it - didn't even have time to think.

I laughed afterwards - as I said I was in game rich already - and I learnt a lot from it.

But I can easily see how if someone was relatively new at the game and felt so powerless they might easily imagine that it happens more than it does.

I live in Russia, and have no problems with matchmaking with people in the EU or US...

It's weird, I'm England (UK) and have no problems with linking with a friend in Germany, but my friend in Wales (UK) has a nightmare and we can only play in a small group of 2 - or things go really wrong.

I fully agree with this being a likely scenario. I like the idea that someone came up with about more random station starts, this would help I feel with the chance in Open of starting Insta ganks. Plus when people start in open and have no issue there may be a great while before they post on forums if ever, but if they are ganked the likely hood of them posting about it increases dramatically, which adds to the perception .

I've said it before, griefers are a small group but they are causing the most damage and are Open's only real problem. Those that like open need to help in combating this, since FD isn't or Open is going to hemorrhage more players.

Welcome anyone new to this thread.

It is pointless posting here as the same group of SOLO and Private players will filibuster anything you say.

So to make things easier just agree to the following and move on with your life.

Solo NPC's are just as challenging as real humans

Not true, unless the human is rubbish.

PVP is bad

PvP is fun, being ganked is bad for the players who don't know about high wake.

DB only ever envisioned player interaction, as waving at each other in space and talking about mining or exploration in space stations

DB wanted PvP to be meaningful, not mindless.

People aren't content

People are never content.

Player created content is wrong

People like the fuel rats add to the game, ganking wings detract from the game.

Mode switching is valid to avoid danger

No but it was an easy way to avoid station rammers pre-speed limit, and it will continue to be the best griefer/exploit avoidance mechanism (when required).

15 seconds logout of danger is valid

Working as intended, logging out via the menu is not an exploit.

Another MMO did something that works, so ED should be the same

Which one and what was it.

EVE did something that works and would be great for ED but should never be copied or referenced

EVE evolved into a game for people who like guilds and who regard exploits as normal play. Other people stayed away, ED tries to cater to all.

Mobius is the way the game should be played and anyone who thinks differently is a griefer, I mean they have over 10k of the half million player base "registered"

Mobius is a nice mode to use if you are feeling sociable and don't fancy PvP, they also ban anti-social types which is nice.

NPC pirating and shooting you is fine, players doing the same thing was never designed to happen.

Player piracy is great, unfortunately player pirates are much rarer than gankers who open fire without warning.

People aren't leaving the game on mass

Open maybe, Mobius and solo are doing well.

P2P is awesome for PVE, so why seek improvement

It was marketed as a P2P game.

Powerplay and undermining anything in solo is totally valid because of something DB said which can be applied.

The game has always had 3 modes, it was marketed as having 3 modes. Why waste time/resources running different BGS.

Working against other players in either Powerplay and minorfactions is definitely not PVP

It's either PvE or PvP depending which mode you choose to play in.

You were banned from Mobius because 10,000 + players don't want to play with you, that's why you are lonely and want everyone forced into your mode.

Deal with it.

No! but prats who join the private group mobius and then go on to attack players breaking the rules they agreed to are!.

players who gank in open for the lolz personally i would say are not griefers... but what they are is currently unrealistically unpunished by the game mechanics.

genuine pirates however are however a benifit to open and is a role i think most hope will be fleshed out more.

IF FD had advertised a forced MP mode with EVE as its benchmark for human interaction that is the 1 thing that I and many other KS backers would have stopped me giving them a penny. The 3 mods and its ability to switich from them at will is a genius solution to the problem of most MMOs. Given you had the ability to know about this system your constant moaning about it is silly imo.

in conclusion
why not put your toys back in your pram they are making a mess!. A tiny amount of homework looking at kickstarter and dev videos will hopefully give an idea of what this game will hopefully be 1 day if FD can fullfill its goals. That is the game I backed and I see no harm in trying to holdj FD to that.

I admit I would like multiple saves, mainly because while I love exploring, I can't just do it days on end. I'd like to have a little variety which you really can't do if you are out in deep space. I have great respect for those who can just explore for weeks on end.

Actually thinking about it I would also start a new CMDR to explore, like yourself I couldn't commit a week to it right now, I am still having too much fun doing other things in game.

Remember that some people will be different to you. What will be entertaining and exciting to you will be dull and boring to other people. Frontier have embraced that diversity. Perhaps you should give it a hug as well.

Have a look at this test.

http://psychcentral.com/quizzes/autism.htm

I got 37, which may suggest that Solo/Mobius is the right place for me. You may score lower than I do, so Open may be best for you. I have no problem at all with PvP/Open/piracy, but they shouldn't be compulsory.

Cheers, Phos.

Exactly what sort of cross comparison are you trying to show by comparing open and private modes with different levels on the autism scale?

I can make a hypothesis that people low on the autism scale may be happy working with other players (and so prefer Open). Also, people higher on the scale may not want to deal with others so often (and so prefer Solo/Group). This is only a hypothesis.

A decent society will be able to work with people with high scores. One of the strengths of Elite: Dangerous is that it can cope with the natural diversity in human personality. That's why Open/PvP should not be compulsory.

Cheers, Phos.

You know, I've been sat here trying to figure out if Phos just really, really, really politely called Maj autistic.
My wife and I are cracking up at that post.

I do feel it may not have been intentional, but it has amused us here.

(And for a point of reference, my oldest son has broad spectrum autism and learning difficulties and my oldest daughter was born with brain damage leading to autistic symptoms - so I am quite familiar with this topic and the symptoms)

Actually I think Phos was saying that Maj is at the other end of the scale. According to the score Phos posted about them selves the "quiz" is saying that Phos is likely Autistic. I scored a 32 so for it says I'm possibly. I put no faith in the quiz but I can see where Phos is coming from. IF you score higher on the quiz you are person who may like to do things alone more or with controlled groups, so Solo and Mobius and other private groups are more your comfort zone.
