I made a post mate, I said what I felt needed saying, *Salute* to you too SSGT!, one of your posts was part of the reason too (well two, but I am sure you can guess the ones I mean)!

Now I am gonna ask something!, (I would personally like the Mods to add the word "coward" to the ban list), yes it really does annoy me that much!.

I would also ask that any player that has worked for the military, police, fire fighter or any other job where they risk their life for others, to call out anyone using the "coward" word, they tend to go quiet when you ask about their RL bravery.

Ex Warwickshire Constable here, great job - loved every minute of it out on the street. Station politics was a nightmare, I'd have so prefered a Solo mode when I had paperwork to do, don't really need or want the custody block phoning every 10 minutes for an "update" on how long you're going to be with the handover package (that if done right, crime depending, can take over 3 hours to put together if you have everything you need in the station). All because they don't want to look after them and as soon as they get the paperwork they can bail them and kick them back out.

One thing you learn as part of the job, it is amazing at how fast loud mouths suddenly wet themselves when they realise their actions have consequences.
I recall one night, I was on nightclub duty and some guy decided to show off infront of his friends he would shoulder barge one of the constables in front of the nightclub (the very people there to protect him from violent drunks).
He picked me as his target, but what he didn't bet on - I'd see / heard his plan.

Assaults on constables.[/h](1)Any person who assaults a constable in the execution of his duty, or a person assisting a constable in the execution of his duty, shall be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale, or to both.

After getting my handcuffs out and telling him he was under arrest..... he wept worse than my daughters do when I won't let them eat junk food before dinner.
Even his social group freaked out. Heck even some of my colleagues looked a tad shocked (I was normally quite placid as I used to be a bar manager, so I am used to drunks and their "fun").

I did let him go with a warning and the sound of my voice ringing in his ears, his social group got a talk as well - for "encouraging" him in the first place.

And that is the thing - for the most part people want to be sociable and want others to be sociable in return, but ignoring the idiots or encouraging them is self defeating.
Unless they are shown the error of their ways, or removed from public spaces permanently, the damage they do just grows until it is beyond repair.
Open players want more people in open - deal with the idiots or put pressure on FD to deal with them. And I do not mean this daft 1 week shadowban rubbish either.
If people are shadowbanned, it should not be for laughable time frames, it should be something that makes people worried about the prospect and want to avoid it - not something they laugh about on YouTube or Reddit.

As for the forums.... well, until game accounts and forum accounts are linked and repercussions are 2 way - the Mods will always have an uphill struggle around here.

I was very surprised re-reading the post later that I wasn't given a "vacation" for it. But it had to be said.

<non-violent> Drunks of Sol approve!

I spent a few nights in the cells, back in the day! At least you got a decent breakfast - if you hadn't annoyed the desk sergeant, that is.

Yeah, the decent food went the way of the dinosaur - budget cuts left custody with something like Asdas cheap microwave meals, but not quite as tasty at half the price.
I'm almost sure it should qualify as a breach of Duty of Care, or a breach of Human Rights.

On the flip side - the hot chocolate is crazy nice !!!
I swear some people got arrested every weekend just for the hot chocolate we had.

Well stated sir. I could not say it better myself, so I'll just quote you instead.

Nice post. A bit disappointed that you only shadowbanned him though.
Was it the prospect of 3 hours of paperwork?

The game would benefit strongly from an Open only mode or equivalent now more than ever.

Elite already offers Open play. It's right there on the menu to choose. If you mean a PVP only environment, where Solo players cannot intrude to grief PVP'ers and the constant pew-pew - Elite offers another mode. It's called CQC. You might have to pick up an Xbox to play it right now, but they are dirt cheap and readily available.

Perfect time to get the thread back on track.

Actually, I would beg to differ. One of Elite's greatest strengths and differentiators is that it offers these 3 modes Open/Group/Solo. It allows people to play as they like. Unlike others such as Eve/SC/Black Prophecy, where there is only one mode, Open. I really like this aspect of Elite.

SC had this great debate about PvP vs PvE, and now they implemented a slider (don't know how effective it's going to be.) Black Prophesy was a full open PvP based space shooter that failed after a few months. I played BP for awhile in Beta. When it went live I kept getting griefed while running missions that I gave up. I dislike PvP but did manage to hold my own then.

I really don't see how this game would benefit from having just one mode (Open) and become like every other space based MMO out there. I sincerely believe that ED's staying power, as a game and a business, is going to be based on their Open/Group/Solo mode concept.

I certainly do not advocate one mode for all players. Every player should play in the mode they prefer.

I would like an Open only mode alongside the other modes.

Hello,
Maybe I'm misunderstanding or did not read your earlier posts. What exactly would your Open only mode entail?
Is it a mode that, if you join then you can't switch modes and are locked into that specific mode for all play?

Regards

There is no reason for it and a waste of resources, not to mention NOT how FD wants the game to be. THEY want everyone to effect the BGS, which you want to negate with your "open only" mode.

And for your other question earlier. I was trained as an alternate for Security Forces when they needed additional manpower.

If Ironman existed I would accept that Open Only was less risky and hope Ironman gained more rewards for more risk. :D

We've been asking for Ironman since before Alpha :) It doesn't need more reward. The risk is the exact same as found in Open, or indeed Solo.

The only difference would be consequence - and consequence is something I truly believe Elite needs lots, and lots, and LOTS MOAR!

Exactly - a mode where what you do in Open stays in Open without the background sim affected by other modes.

Thanks for clearing that up.
But I believe that FD did not want this mode or else they would not have made Solo play online only. Their reason for no offline Solo mode was that the game universe should be in sync across all modes.
It seems that this Open mode that you are advocating is contrary to FD's direction for the game.

I believe there is a significant audience for it.

We've spoke about this recently. The benefit you suggested really just amounted to a separate BSG/PP for an open-only mode. You thought a significant group of players would prefer a galaxy that didn't allow for players not in that mode, to affect the BSG. Do you think more players would join up for that, than are in open now? Would it attract enough players to support the BSG?

At the end of our discussion I suggested that it wouldn't be effectively supported, due to a lack of hands to move things along. I'm still at a loss for what you see as a benefit from this segregation. I remember comparing your position to taking 'your ball, and going home'. Maybe I should read back, and continue where we left off.

I would prefer that they remove the ability to kill Player Characters. Everyone's problem solved!

But that's going to happen the same time they split up people from the BGS....when they shut down the game and let people have the server code...yay mods!
