Always go open. If you don't like it, you can still switch to solo. I guarantee that from open to solo, it will be far easier than from solo to open :)

Depends on why you signed up I guess. You seem curious, so I would suggest trying Open as soon as you feel confident enough and get a feel for it. May as well while it's cheap to rebuy :)

Once you get into the bigger ships it becomes more of a "business decision".. lol

The timer has officially started as to when this gets merged into the "Solo vs Open" thread..

Only if it doesn't get moved to the new player forum ...

If you choose Open, then run to another system, about 50 to 100Lys from the start should see you alight, but no guarantees. You can go solo, for as long as you wish, NPCs will still try and kill you, so look at their ranks, as this is an indicator of their danger. I used solo until I was happy with my weapons and skill. That said, been in open over a month now and not been attacked once. This space stuff, is very very big and once you get away from the starter systems, it can be hard to find other players. Don't look at Solo as the soft option, it is not, look at it as a training and testing ground. Or you can go to Morbidnes or whatever it is called. I still Mine and trade in solo, but am beginning to really enjoy Open, but I look it as just one big combat zone and fly accordingly. Shielded and well armed and always ready for a fight.

I stand corrected. 9 hours of boredom isn't that long but considering how short lived and infrequent the joy is, it doesn't seem worth it to me. I like piracy but I would have trouble finding the strength to travel 9 hours to do it.

There's nothing to pirate from an explorer....

Live a little. Go open. It's just more exciting, more fun, and you'll make more friends. I don't really get what others are worried about as I pretty much only play open, I've hundreds of hours in the game, and I've always loved interacting with others in open. I've only been first-attacked maybe three times, and of those, I probably deserved it twice (being wanted).

If you're really a very green newbie, then you stand a chance of being killed simply because you don't know how or are too slow to escape danger. But that's ok too, because your ships will be worth very little and nothing will teach you faster.

Still, if I were you, I'd do a little reading into how to disengage from a fight as fast and safely as possible, just in case someone decides they want to kill you.

And remember, the most lethal entities in the game (that's yourself, and anywhere with a landing pad) are present no matter which you choose. No joke! =)

Don't listen to the forums, killing happens occasionally but it's not that common.

If I were you I'd play in solo until you get a good handle on the game and mechanics, then switch to open. With solo you're missing out on a lot of positive player interaction, some bad too, but the good/neutral outnumber the bad by far.

worst case scenario, you die, so what? You'll die a lot in elite. It's part of the fun.

I hear so much about combat logging and griefing in the game that it seems like you can't fart without somebody trying to interdict you or shove their brightly colored pulse laser up my tight, little, startwinder behind.

I wanna enjoy the game but if I keep getting killed right out of the station then should I just play solo?

I just finished the tutorials. I don't wanna hate the game because I'm so new I suck at everything and people keeps of killing the new guy out the door.

anybody?

I've played in Open since Elite was released back in December of 2014. I have been attacked ONCE by another commander in all that time. Don't believe all the hype.

How many people stand in 2 or 3 hour lines for a roller coaster ride that lasts 90 seconds?
Alton Towers (UK) is a prime example, they had an incident with "The Smiler" and 4 people got badly hurt, in less than an hour some people were asking when it will be open for the next load of customers line up for and ride on.

Even when I took my family to Disneyland Europe last year, even in the rain people were waiting over 2 hours for a short ride that was 60 - 90 seconds.

People are weird.

This may sound a bit sad but most people only play solo or private group now, and I will probably get told of again but to say Elite Dangerous is a massive multi player online game is in my opinion just wrong you will never see more than 7 or 8 players at one time. Once you leave the start system and the dock were every single Cmdr starts from you will be very lucky to see any body, yes every body starts from the same location because the random multi play start never worked.
So if you do play open play you may get lucky and see other friendly Cmdrs or you may get very unlucky and have a Cmdr shoot at you but the odds are you will never see any body.

Well I may be partial to this as I always played open, but in my own personal opinion, open is where "all of the game" is, for better or worse.

My advice, get a better FSD as soon as you can and start to move away from the starting region.

Anyway, being attacked by other players is extremely rare (there are more posts about it than actual attacks), unless you are doing certain CGs or flying around in player-populated areas in extremely vulnerable ships.

edit: oops the merge was fast on this one :D I was responding to the new guy asking if he should start on open or solo.

Victim is pretty strong...in a game where there are expectations of crime occurring.
My use of the word victim was in response to its use in the post I was replying to.

My original use of 'victim' was purely to identify someone who has had a crime committed against them.

This definition: a person harmed, injured, or killed as a result of a crime, accident, or other event or action.
Not this definition: a person who has come to feel helpless and passive in the face of misfortune or ill-treatment.

There is a lot posted (!) about open vs solo on this forum. What seems to be forgotten is the origins of the grouping mechanism - the idea was that anyone could play how they like by grouping with players who had a compatible playstyle. This, the idea was, would make griefing etc largely a thing to be policed by players without FD having to get all on one side or the other.
To demonstrate the possibilities of the grouping mechanism FD included two presets to get people started, "open" which is the least restricted as far as rules goes and most inclusive as far as players goes - basically you agree that you can meet anyone who is playing by any rules here, and "solo" which is the most restricted as to who you can meet. Players are encouraged to try open and if they want to play with a more restricted style to join or make a group. Solo is the closest thing to single-player.
The advantage of this is freedom - you can choose one extreme or the other or anywhere in between.

Edit: wow, was responding to an OP in a related thread... That got merged quick - I was vowing never to read or post in the Open vs Group vs Solo thread. Dammit...

I've mostly played in open since the start. It's a big galaxy and you can easily find places where you're unlikely to even see another commander let alone be attacked by them. There are a few hotspots in which you are more likely to be attacked; the starter systems, Lave and a few surrounding systems or anywhere hosting a community goal. From your description it sounds like someone is out greifing newbies at the station. Be aware that you can easily switch between modes Solo, Open or Private group and it won't affect you progress. Best advice is start in solo then get clear of the starter system. Once you've got a few systems away you can switch back to open.

Fair enough, I accept that some people are weird. I know someone who camped out for 4 days to get a ps3 when it launched.

Yes, and I think everybody, including Roybe knows what is being said. ;)

I guess we often devolve into semantics, since all the arguments have already been stated, many times. :) As I said later in the post, a person who is robbed or destroyed may well feel like a victim, and I guess that if the thing that robbed / destroyed them was a human, that feeling might well be stronger than if the game (an NPC) had done it.

Most of my friends think I'm weird because I play a computer game... :D
