and where's the fun in interaction with only a friendly greeting?
It's like going to a nicer pub and avoiding the fight at closing time....

Reminds me of one bit of data about PvP presence in MMO forums. About a year ago, a LotRO dev gave some info on the imbalance between forum participation and actual number of PvPers. In that specific case, PvPers + raiders were more than half the people that posted on the forums, but less than 10% of the player base.
Hard to tell if this is the case here too, but from what I've seen through more than a decade either lurking or posting in MMO forums, in most games this seems to be the rule rather than the exception.

The stat would best be given in hours. X hours of play time in May was in solo, Y in groups, and Z in open. That would give us a clear picture. Those stats would be a bit meaningless though without some long-term trending and analysis. You can't, for example, just look at the total of players and call a percentage, as 100% of players who have ever logged in and played open were still in Solo until their first jump. Players can be in any mode they please at any time, so you can't just say Player X is purely Open, as he may well likely switch to Solo when network or instancing goes wonky, just to continue playing. You can't say Player Y is Solo only, because he may switch to Open when he feels like it, just you never find him.
Prove it. I can just as easily say that most people expected ED to be a great single player game, and I'd wager that my chances of being correct are higher. Your declaration is meaningless without proof. Most people expected ED to be a great multiplayer expirience in space, kicking your adrenaline level to the top.

does that pub have a pool table?
idk about you but I don't go to a bar to fight, I go to a bar to drink and socialize. I play a space sim for danger and pirates. It's like going to a nicer pub and avoiding the fight at closing time....
Nowhere, the fun is in not knowing what will happen. Maybe he'll try to kill, maybe pirate, maybe just say hello.Where is the fun interaction with getting your Type 9 blasted to fish food?
Nope - nor darts or slot machines.

some "entertainment" that may involve "audience participation"....

So do I — but only those of the NPC variety.I play a space sim for danger and pirates.
Subjective. Not knowing what will happen when I meet another player kills my fun unless I can rule out the negative interactions. I have absolutely no interest in that kind of player conflict, only in cooperation and other kinds of positive interaction.Nowhere, the fun is in not knowing what will happen. No, most people didn't. The kickstarters and backers certainly didn't, as this thing was started on the strength of the old Elite games, which were based on immersion and roleplay. This was never, ever, meant to be Battlefield in space.
If people buy it without doing a bit of research into what the game is, particularly in a franchise like Elite which goes back 30 years and is easy to research, then that's an issue for the individual concerned. If I went out and got a copy of Dragon Age, but expected to be playing as a Dragon, and showed up at the BioWare forum demanding to know why I couldn't play as a dragon what do you think the response would be?
HINT: They wouldn't completely re-engineer the game to let me play as a dragon.
For many people that's not fun. It just isn't. And for those people there is Solo.
well, i did play the original elite.
but when i saw that the new one was an MMO, and watched the trailers of a dogfight, and capital ship battle
i thought that the gameplay would involve other people.
only fair really, part of the MMO label, is 'multiplayer', just like forza 5 is a multiplayer, or WOT.
now i accept that it ED has a single player mode, but really, if its about PVE with other players
that makes it a CO OP game.
so not only is ED 'only just' an MMO, you'd also have to squint your eyes to call it a multiplayer!
