Reminds me of one bit of data about PvP presence in MMO forums. About a year ago, a LotRO dev gave some info on the imbalance between forum participation and actual number of PvPers. In that specific case, PvPers + raiders were more than half the people that posted on the forums, but less than 10% of the player base.

Hard to tell if this is the case here too, but from what I've seen through more than a decade either lurking or posting in MMO forums, in most games this seems to be the rule rather than the exception.

Yes, very wise words from the LotRO developer in the mentioned link. And well known fact to any game developer since 1996 (when Ultima Online went online).

Those stats would be a bit meaningless though without some long-term trending and analysis. You can't, for example, just look at the total of players and call a percentage, as 100% of players who have ever logged in and played open were still in Solo until their first jump. Players can be in any mode they please at any time, so you can't just say Player X is purely Open, as he may well likely switch to Solo when network or instancing goes wonky, just to continue playing. You can't say Player Y is Solo only, because he may switch to Open when he feels like it, just you never find him.
The stat would best be given in hours. X hours of play time in May was in solo, Y in groups, and Z in open. That would give us a clear picture.

3.Online SOLO play where the player is in the same universe as all other players, but will see no humans (essentially a private group of one).
Solo play is for users using WIFI connection 3G and low board band the Dev.'s said at the start game Off line is not going to happen for the moment but they came up with solo mode to help people who do not have supper fast broad band. This is why we have the to modes as simple as that I am getting some what on tiered of seeing threads bashing this option for those people that rely on this option, In hindsight not every online game is about PVP playing Elite for example is about the way you the player want to take his or her path, Be a miner a fighter a explorer and grind and craw your way to be come Elite of the Elite so lets talk about it but stop bashing something that helps a lot of people who do not live in city areas or who do not as stated have Super fats broadband Thank you all as ways for keeping Elite alive

It's like going to a nicer pub and avoiding the fight at closing time....
idk about you but I don't go to a bar to fight, I go to a bar to drink and socialize. I play a space sim for danger and pirates.

Where is the fun interaction with getting your Type 9 blasted to fish food?
Nowhere, the fun is in not knowing what will happen. Maybe he'll try to kill, maybe pirate, maybe just say hello.

Nope - nor darts or slot machines.

ahh, so its the kinda pub which looks nice from the outside,
but its only after you've ordered your drink that you realise there's nothing to do
and so you drink up and move onto somewhere better then?

for me, a pub has a pool table, darts, table football maybe, fruit machines, music, an outside drinking area and a HUGE TV.

you know.... things to do!

Neither do I - but some patrons of some pubs are significantly more prone to putting on some "entertainment" that may involve "audience participation" (whether they like it or not)....

Most people expected ED to be a great multiplayer expirience in space, kicking your adrenaline level to the top.

No, most people didn't. The kickstarters and backers certainly didn't, as this thing was started on the strength of the old Elite games, which were based on immersion and roleplay. This was never, ever, meant to be Battlefield in space.

If people buy it without doing a bit of research into what the game is, particularly in a franchise like Elite which goes back 30 years and is easy to research, then that's an issue for the individual concerned. If I went out and got a copy of Dragon Age, but expected to be playing as a dragon, and showed up at the BioWare forum demanding to know why I couldn't play as a dragon what do you think the response would be?

HINT: They wouldn't completely re-engineer the game to let me play as a dragon.

For many people that's not fun. It just isn't. And for those people there is Solo.

So do I — but only those of the NPC variety.

Subjective. Not knowing what will happen when I meet another player kills my fun unless I can rule out the negative interactions. I have absolutely no interest in that kind of player conflict, only in cooperation and other kinds of positive interaction.

And thus, the issue. The game attracted players that have fun in widely different ways. The kind of environment you seek is something that I will never be able to enjoy. So don't expect me to simply accept anything that can make my preferred environment any less enjoyable for me, that could render it less meaningful, or that could give advantages to players that prefer other modes.

well, i did play the original elite.
but when i saw that the new one was an MMO, and watched the trailers of a dogfight, and capital ship battle
i thought that the gameplay would involve other people.

only fair really, part of the MMO label, is 'multiplayer', just like forza 5 is a multiplayer, or WOT.

now i accept that it ED has a single player mode, but really, if its about PVE with other players
that makes it a CO OP game.

so not only is ED 'only just' an MMO, you'd also have to squint your eyes to call it a multiplayer!

When I first saw the game trailer I thought it wasn't indicative to the actual game play. Had I seen the trailer and I didn't know what Elite was, I probably wouldn't have bought the game as it didn't portray something I would want to play.

I don't think FD did themselves any favours there, but I guess a trailer of an asp mining fragments wouldn't have the same effect.
