well, it doesn't surprise me that you get different results on reddit.
the audience is quite different.
i for my part don't like reddit at all (not just for ED).

neither reddit or this forums represent the "playerbase" as a whole.

Particularly on the forum. Even more so on this thread. In fact I believe Jockey posted up a handy table on the top 20 or 30 posters or so. Have a check how many are solo/group posters :p

In fact I would love to post Jockey's table again. If anyone has issues with their status I can correct it:

post count2.png

I have already made an error Nedaalex is open.

Asp Explorer is not Solo/Group - he is <Router Fiddling>

I typically don't support combat logging. But like anything I use a little discretion. If you have a 2 day old player that does it, because he doesn't know what else to do. Cut em a little slack, there still getting to know the game, maybe haven't figured out where they need to be. I would never react the way the folks did on the REDDIT forum.

But I do think that anyone that doesn't want to deal with pirates or doesn't enjoy that sort of thing should keep out of there. Like you said some like to be frightened, some don't.

I would cut slack but the amount of combat loggers I see I have no sympathy any more. The other day I got on to play and the first person I pulled over combat logged on me.

I happily help new players whenever I can, I'll gladly chat to anyone in supercruise or station. A lot of the time players have actually thanked me BECAUSE I shot their drives out and then told them how to reboot afterwards as they wouldn't have known how to do it other wise.

The otherday I sat with a trader I had killed previously for 40 minutes giving him tips and a run down on game mechanics.

We got a stickie this time !!!!!
This is indeed, a very special day in my house :D

Edit;

Thought I'd add this for fun from the old thread.

(Robert, you need to post more often :p lol)

<Joke>

Can I get a mod to delete this please, its blatant naming & shaming, Jockey79 (note the seriousness of me using your full name here!, if I was any more annoyed about this I might laugh, ahem, puts on stern voice).

"What did I say about posting facts, you really need to slow down, I realise its your birthday and you might be a bit hyper today, but we have over 9k posts left, there are plenty for everyone (666 pages if you don't mess this one up too!) :D.

<Joke>

Distance, I will rep the next post of yours I see (and a few other people too), your last few posts in the previous thread (which was closed when I read them) deserve that, I have said before I agree with a lot of what you say, some things not, but quite a lot.

I do think (and hope) that the crime update will get around to enforcing proper law responses in "safer" systems, whilst rewarding piracy better (AI too not just pvp) and ensuring they have a safe home in the Anarchys, it will make ED more like Elite, I would be astounded if they left that out (unless they did too in later iterations, I didn't play them, it bought one of them but couldn't get the hang of it, plus I had a full time job then :().

One thing you said:

"When I kill a trader I'm actually the exact opposite. I'm not sitting here cackling with maniacal laughter I'm more disappointed because the Trader couldn't do basic math and I have to pay for my rail ammo"

I say:

Fair play to you sir, in my opinion you are a proper pirate, I will use "when" rather than "if" I come back in to open, well for some of my time at least, as I think I will one day, its how I played from PB to gamma. I took my type 6 into open a while back to get pirated, I found a good RP pirate pretty quick, well actually he found me to be fair ;o), I just traded as normal (Eravate I think or close), he worked for his money (4 tons of crop harvesters IIRC).

I will watch the video again to remind myself of his name (plus it makes me smile & hope I am more competent next time), if I see him again I would add him to my friends list, I would likely do the same with you, Hell I would even take a small detour to your system to give you a chance to rob me if I saw you were on line, just to say hi, I might even have a fight with you occasionally if I think I stand a chance or even for giggles, I am sure I will lose & you would recover your ammo cost.

I guess that makes me a bit weird, I am having fun in solo / groups (not grinding a big ship to troll open, I have an Asp, Vulture & 30 mill CR) and will at some point I am sure risk something in open playing a trader looking to meet a pirate now and again (when I want to). I could do it right now, buy a cobra or type 6 and go for it but I am waiting for CMDR Thrust from Bradford to update me on 1.7, he did say the "wheatons law" patch was having an effect but it was too early to tell.

Ya see now that was funny. lol

I really want more people in open because I think of how much fun a lot of players could have just from seeing other people. This isn't aimed at the die hard solo players you're happy where you are.

When I got ED it was because I played frontier back in the day and thought of how cool it would be if all the other ships were people. Having a taste of that is great.

I fully accept the problems with crime and that it needs a hell of a lot of work to make it safe for your average player. All I'm saying is don't give up on open just yet but right now it's probably not for the fainthearted.

That being said there's only about 20 systems that are pirated (well known traderoutes), about 4 stations that have ram griefers and community goals that are the dangerous places. There's always an unerlying element of danger in open but it's not the hell hole it's made out to be.

Also I've only been to the Lave area once. I find a lot of common sense is needed in any open game world. Even as a pirate it's dangerous so I do the sensible thing and stay away :)

As always I'm perfectly happy with mode switching, I personally think they should add a pve open and the only thing that should be changed is something to do with the cgs.

Does open with your router locked off in a safe at the bottom of the atlantic count?

:D contrary to what many believe - I really do play in unfiltered Open. I don't even have any blocked players, in-game or otherwise. My routers and firewall, for the purposes of Elite, have no special settings other than allowing double NAT traversal. I simply show how things could be done - doesn't mean that I actually put them into action for Elite.

Ya know mate, I actually thinking of heading over there for a bit after I have a little cash in my wallet. No I'm not taking some bad ass ship over there! I probably take a cobra. See how far I can get trading in open. But I might not too. It's very nice to have a choice!

Don't bother. His love, Ms Router, has already said he can't have any friends :)

How many of your posts where the same copy pasted text :p

I'd love to know that myself. But to be honest, I really cannot be bothered to try and find out. (on the post table for the old thread, click the number for my posts and only mine will come up in a big list)

Glad you found it, Dabba was happy with the current mode setup if I recall correctly - so another Solo/ Group status quo advocate.
Last time I spoke to Dabba a couple of Open advocates had become overly insulting in the thread (the ones responsible for comments like: non open players are "cowards" - and related comments.) towards Solo and Group players, he felt is was better to leave the thread and not respond to them.... I kinda wish I had done the same as I landed an "enforced holiday" from the forums (totally deserved by the way).

But to explain that table, most of the folks who attack the modes and mode switching, stuck around for 10 - 15 posts, then gave up and left.
Defenders like myself never left - hence the large number of defenders with over 100 posts (we have to repeat our points to each new attacker, again and again and again)

Hence the reason I think the last Open Vs Solo VS Groups was drowned out by overactive Solo members...

I didn't even have to come up with a reason for it myself.
