Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread - Part the Second [Now With Added Platforms].

Adding an additional slot would not, in itself, require each slot to be locked to a particular game mode....

I know, but that's missing the point of what I wrote and is in itself a separate issue (and I really don't want to go down that road). The 'solo/online saves' quote provided is also another issue entirely (personal universe versus shared universe).

Never mind, as I don't want to labour a point. If the majority are content with one character per licence then that's fine. I can accept that, so no harm done.

If the suggestion was really only about having more than one save, why post it on this thread? :)

I'm not necessarily disagreeing about more than one commander slot - simply that there is no need to link the introduction of additional commander slot(s) with a lockdown as to which game mode each commander exists in - they are separate issues.

Multiple commander slots - yes please
Locked to a "mode" - no thanks

You also can't have a personal universe - back end database is too large to clone for each player to run their own, otherwise we would have been given the promised offline mode.

The reason why I thought it would be best to have only one as Open was to prevent some less than welcome playing behaviour. If I was evil (which I'm not) it could be fun to grief people, then switch identity and whip up some ire amongst the other players via ingame chat, maybe at other times spreading rumours about so-and-so being in the vicinity. I could pick a nice patch of players, sneaking in to their midst in my 'clean' identity, then switch over, cause a whole lot of mess and just as easily disappear into the ether again. I could wing up with unsuspecting traders when clean, then when they're not expecting it transform into the devil and have at them. I daresay those sorts of players could think up various ways to exploit it and cause mayhem. Hence, one character slot in Open only.

I'm not suggesting my idea was perfect, either. I just thought it could go someway to appeasing those people who request multiple slots (although they might think two is not sufficient), whilst not making them pay twice, and also allow all of us to follow two distinct paths if we chose (e.g. one independent, one Alliance) although that is not forced upon anyone, or still have occasional pew pew action when 50,000Ly from Sol. It would not cost FD much (some coding time and a bit more storage space for the save information) and each character would be playing independently so could not cause undue influence on the shared game universe. One could always allow players to maintain a single slot which could still switch between Solo and Open, but if two were allowed for the aforesaid reason then it'd make sense to limit them to Open or Solo.

Anyway, that's the last I'll write on the subject. If the idea wasn't liked it's no biggy - that's why we have forums so we can see what others think about stuff. It's all good, innit!

Same argument I have used for some time now - As it stands you have to make 1 choice and be stuck with it. Want to be an explorer for example : well, you have to commit to that choice for a very long time and if you grow tired of "jump - honk - jump - honk" you can't easily come back to populated space for a change. During the KS it was mentioned multiple slots; again on the forum; and now magically it's into the bit bucket.

The only changes that would be required IMO would be that if you ignored a pilot you actually ignore the account - get's round the issue of 1 abusive and 1 clean commander; plus you make wiping a commander time locked. (Hit delete and inversely proportional to the rating it takes a long time to actually delete - until then it's greyed out) This stops the create - abuse - wipe commanders.

All save slots though would be allowed to play how you want - fancy seeing everyone : open mode; just want to see your friends - group mode; feeling antisocial or want to be alone - solo mode; flip at will ... it makes zero difference any more (more so with XBox players affecting back end but not visible to PC / MAC players)
