ED - thoughts on PowerPlay - it forces me out of OPEN PLAY

### MODERATOR HAT OFF ###

Many did write about PP pro and cons.

After playing a view days for F.Winters I did get to the conclusion that PP is pushing me out of OPEN PLAY or punishing me for playing in OPEN PLAY.

Playing POWERPLAY alone (not in a wing) in OPEN is not only dangerous - its nearly suicide. I did try to deliver this EXPANSION goods and was attacked (and destroyed 2x) by wings of 4 players from "enemy" powers.

So why should I still play OPEN when I risk to get in a very uneven situation 1 vs 4?

The logical solution would be to play SOLO or GROUP, same rewards - little or no risk.

So 1 great problem is that OPEN is adding RISK but absolute no REWARD for it.... you get the same credits in group or solo. As long as OPEN dont give some bonus many will think 2 before going OPEN.
Of cause this problem is old, and was the same in the combat zones before PP, or in the CG which included wars.

2 great problem is that PP did give me a lot of ENEMIES appr. 8 out of 10 players are enemies - but it did NOT give me more friends..... in fact we are divided in several powers, play now in different power zones, and live in different time zones.
So it did get more difficult to meet old friends.... or now they are even enemies!!

About more friends - where are the NPC wings - we have them in 1 training missions? At least I could hire some "friends" and have a chance to survive when the 4 wing player "heroes" are chasing me (alone) again.......of cause I can also switch to SOLO.....

You also can't have a personal universe - back end database is too large to clone for each player to run their own, otherwise we would have been given the promised offline mode.

I doubt this. Frontier itself said in the past that it wasn't a matter of it being impossible, just a matter of it requiring extra development they weren't willing to do, at least at the moment. And apparently the extra development was, for the most part, related with adding to a galaxy bereft of other players and without hand-crafted events injected by the devs with things to do.

but now we have a whole new portion of the player base that can have a huge effect on PP without anyway to effectively slow or deter them.

What are you talking about ... How do you work that one out ... ??

There will be people duking it out on the Xbox as well, doing all the PP requirements for the various factions.. so whats the difference? The xbox players will contribute and the PC / MAC players will contribute to their PP faction status as well. You may not be able to personally go and hunt down an individual pilot if they are the Xbox version , but who does that anyway ...

I really can't see where you are going with this.

OHOHHO My friend, Now this is something worth a Screenshot, now even the mods say what we have been screaming for, since CG updates. Open play= hard and risky. Solo=ez lyfe ez money... But the devs don't seem to see this, EVER. This makes people like me dust the game and wait for SC or NewMan'sSky, since i dearly hope to God that there there is Open and Solo as separate modes. Also you might want to join the OpenvsSolovsGroups discussion since this is basically what it's all about.

This also seems to be the GENERAL opinion of newcomers. " Yay a MMO i can do everything I want in it yes! Oh wait, are you telling me there are people influencing my world that I will never see? Wait, can i get bounties in the top list in stations from people whop are actually in Solo" Yeah, that's about it with piracy and basically half of the game. No piracy, no danger for trading, ez money and boring times. More and more people go to Solo because of this and people like me who like Open only, leave the game because sooner or later Open is going to be just like Solo, you and space dust, oh boy! What a journey!

insurance costs being either removed or lowered to insignificant levels in open would resolve this issue to some extent.
I don't think it would solve anything, it would make death pointless that's all, "yay I died, back in a moment to help you guys!"

Sure might make more 'action' initially but what would be the point? if people could always afford to die with their biggest ships, it would not come down to player skill but just down to who has biggest ship more or less?

One of my friends joined the same power.
We normally all hang around in open. He sent an email detailing hoe he was murdered doing the delivery missions. For some reason, he is always in Solo mode when I look at my contacts tab now, the same as you.

+1 Rep and seconded!

Couldnt agree more. It's the same argument a lot of us have been posting for a long while now, now confined to the SolovsGroupvsOpeb discussion. So it's *very* interesting to see a moderator such as yourself in agreement.

As it stands, despite being a complete Open player myself, the only actual *incentive* (if you can call it that) to play in Open, is the very small amount of friendly interaction and much more common wings of CMDR pirates (and now CMDRs pledged to enemy powers). As such there is nothing other than pride really keeping people in Open as you can play and earn exactly the same and unhindered in Solo, which I really do think is a shame, because it's just thinning our already small/niche community over private modes.

Clearly FD can track where commodities are bought/sold, as they've shown this in some of the community competitions such as the Titan Black hunt. So in theory prices could be limited if bought and sold outside of Open mode.

Sadly these methods are usually shunned and frowned upon...

To the OP, it's the risk that makes open fun and appealing. In general NPCs rarely pose a threat except in large wings, making solo quite a dull experience.

That said, it would be nice if they offered some sort of carrot for people to play open, such as improved rewards, income or progression.

And give no meaning to destruction and therefore remove much of the risk from the game.

Its not something I would like to see myself, but while ever there is risk regardless of reward and the option not to take risk people will always take the easier path.

There's nothing wrong with that mind, it's plain common sense.

I have to agree, I've long thought that open should offer enhanced rewards to counterbalance it's far greater risk. Otherwise there's little or no incentive to play there. I like to play there myself but I often feel punished for it.

This is is the biggest problem with Open Play. No reward for the risk. I'm still full playing in Open right now, trading, avoiding threats, but for how long? Like you said, 4 vs. 1 is a no win situation. Power play is going to force open players to join groups or just accept a massive amount of risk for no reward at all. Last time I did a CG I ended up leaving it because after losing 20 million in 4 v1s, it just made no sense to continue. I'm a stickler for open so I just jumped to less populated systems and played there. It's a gameplay flaw which eventually will hurt the game if something is not done.
