Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread - Part the Second [Now With Added Platforms].

You are making the point that is one step away to acceptance to the real design of the game. The game is everything to everyone because it is designed this way. To make the game work for everyone, everyone has to have an even footing. That's why everyone affects the game in the same manner.

Once people understand that the real PvP in this game is between groups of people collecting PvE goals/trophies, this thread will end. This is all that has to be explained and repeated. I have had very contentious discussions with people in RL over this game. Until they came to understand this issue. Then they either stopped playing because it was 'rubbish design' or they continued to play knowing the argument was moot.

The only reason this thread has gone on as long as it has, is that the 'private mode' players are afraid that Fdev might actually listen to the Open crowd. If you accept that the game is designed with the above as hard coded and never changing, why bother messing with folks. You can happily play the game more and do a lot less forum PvP.

But then, ultimately, you don't trust FDev's design...or their commitment to the design..I wonder which it is?

i cant speak for the rest of the solo and group players but i have no concerns regarding FDev doing anything with the current state of play.. the 3 modes are a core element within the game. if open players really want their own permanent mode i'm sure FDev could figure out to give them what they want, i cant see it being the current open mode though as that is part of the overall simulation and shared with all platforms, but.. giving them a shard/server of their own with its own simulation, yeah sure, i'd support that decision, especially if it gives us some peace and quiet. even if it actually got the go ahead, we have a player base that contains many a migratory player, those who spread their time between multiple modes dependant on mood, ping, location and such. being given the option of a permanent 'locked in' open play server, how many of those would actually go for it. open will still exist here as it currently is, so aside from those that decide to stay put, i wonder how long it would take for those that moved to self destruct > delete reset > return to the original? i wouldn't mind that either as long as FD posted a list of those coming back, you know, just so we could say hi, welcome back :p

Hmm. Ok, if you say so...

As I said, I agree with your points, mostly. I don't agree that it's the 'private mode' players who are elongating this thread though, in fact I would say that they are the people for whom the game actually works just fine, as we don't see many posts complaining about Open.

Whether I, or anybody else posting here, trust FD is immaterial, but it's always a good idea to counter things that you don't agree with if you have the option to do so.

I think the reason that the thread has gone on for as long as it has is because every couple of weeks (or whatever time frame you think is appropriate), another person comes along and comes up with an extremely original (yes, I'm being sarcastic) "I think solo mode is unfair and it should be dropped." post, often with an antagonistic and insulting tone. Such posts should be answered, and it seems there are plenty of us who are happy to do just that. :)

I remember when ppl used to thrive on competition and challenge to better their peers. This generation nowadays is all about the "competition is bad. Everyone is equal. There are no winners or losers" bunch of bull crap they teach kids in school now

ah yes.

i agree totally.

i am in the park playing go and backgammon and checkers and chess with people and then you and your mates come along and beat me to unconsciousness set my electric wheelchair on fire and claim to be teaching children the truth that life is not fair.

i should be forced into non-consenting PVP in open even though i can't muster the skills and coordination to kill the weakest of NPC's.

it's completely wrong to call you a psycho killer.
you're point is easily understood, thank you.

I disagree! ;P

I would also point out, 'Sticks and stones....' <btw there is a button on the lower left 'report this post' I find it works quite well against unruly or rude people.>

They already have this...they just need to cheat often enough to get shadow banned....and yet.....

I'm afraid I'm being a bit dense today, and I'm not really getting you. :)

The first line responded to your first underlined point...

The second to your second underlined point <related to the child rhyme 'Sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never harm you>.

Both comments were sarcastic statements showing you that both reasons for response are YOUR reasons to respond...not a necessary reason to respond.

I do it at my own pace without feeling any pressure to respond in a timely manner, if at all. I come to the forum when I want and leave when I want. My terms. I don't have that control in Open. However, I don't need you to understand me, the small number of people I choose as friends do and that's enough for me.

Adding to it, it's why mode switching is great for many players. They get to choose when and how to interact, with no pressure. Without mode switching, the choice of how to interact would be locked at character creation, and the only control over it afterwards would be to simply not play.

FD could create hundreds of opportunities for team and collaborative open game. Some missions for wings, with interesting awards and prizes. Security traders, and miners, some.. transportation of goods through dangerous areas, and of course war, hunting down pirates and so on. But why FD to do this? Why would they expand the possibilities of interaction?

I'm actually very glad they aren't pushing players to interact. I interact with others only when I feel like it; if a game tries to force me to interact, I'm out.

(Though "glad" might be the wrong word here; Frontier has been promising that players would never be forced to play together from the very start, and repeating it ever since, so they more or less are honor-bound to keep supporting Solo mode. And that isn't even taking into account the legal issues they could get into for dropping an advertised feature after players have already purchased the game, or the issue with how it would change the game's rating.)

But then, ultimately, you don't trust FDev's design...or their commitment to the design..I wonder which it is?

After they removed offline, despite repeatedly promising it for about two years? It will take me at least a decade to trust them again. Or to purchase any new game of them that isn't taken from the bargain bin, for what matters.

I guess you can always block me if my posts offend you so much. ;)

I shan't take offense.

They do not offend...they provide amusement in the proper light...which I enjoy shining occasionally! Keep on, keeping on!

Isn't it easier to not play a game by a dev that did that...and warn others of the issue on the wider internet...rather than fight for or against the design of the game?

Actually, the first thing I tell anyone that asks me about the game is how the whole offline/refunds saga went.

And, well, if I had the choice back then, if I had known they would remove offline, I would never have backed this game. But right now I have a copy, complete with a lifetime expansion pass; it would be kinda silly to not make use of it. Just don't ask me to trust anything Frontier, or DB, says in the next few years at least; they will have to earn back my trust before I will believe any of their announcements or promises.

Point taken...and this is a difference between us. Providing support, in any manner, to a company that I felt had 'cheated' me so badly, would be against my capability. Allowing them to count me among the current player base, with log-in statistics, would be more than I would give them. In addition to providing them content within their forum as well as within the game would drive me over the edge. I would be infracted and banned so quickly that it would be a pointless endeavor.

I must agree here, I lost all faith and trust in Cryptic Studios after being lied today too often. I can no longer support them, their game or their forums.
This year, is the first year I've not played the summer event. I even have a life time sub.

I've never understood people who keep taking part in a game or forums when they say they don't like it.

I agree with that if you don't like something. I think DarkWalker is saying he has lost faith in FD, not that he doesn't like ED, or at least some parts of it.

My main gripe with Frontier isn't actually with the removal of the offline mode, but in how it was communicated and the way they handled refunds; if they had communicated it clearly, with the emphasis that such a large change deserved, and offered a no-strings-attached refund policy to those players that didn't want the game anymore now that it was online-only, I would have accepted the decision and even defended them.

But that is in the past now, not much use discussing it anymore. And I did like Frontier before, Elite isn't the only one of their franchises I enjoy, so I thought they deserved a chance to earn back my trust. I do have the game and paid for all future expansions over two years ago, after all.

(Though if they pull a similar stunt again, all bets are off.)
