"Could it be that there are so many Griefers, that death would be immanent? Could it be that there are large player based organizations out there that are killing every new player they see, in an effort to drive almost everyone to solo or groups?"

No, thats you sensationalizing the issue that for the most part is a non issue. Been playing since the start of the year, 99.9% in open. Never been griefed, never been ganked... despite all the fear-mongering from those who keep singing this song. In fact, I'm downright disappointed at the lack of said griefing. It would make the game a heck of a lot more interesting to me if this sort of thing went on a lot more than it does. I want Elite Dangerous to feel dangerous. Sadly, it doesn't.

Hi 5thNovember - I can't read your post because of the colour you have chosen.

Salute Commanders,

Remember, this is an ONLY online game... Not primarily... ONLY. I do believe you are confusing OPEN with ONLINE...
Now also realize that they programmed in TWO, yes TWO other modes for people to AVOID strictly PvP. Solo AND Group. So which mode do you THINK is given priority?
Given these FACTS, I honestly don't comprehend how the thinking that those that play in SOLO or GROUP are needing punished for choosing such modes. I believe that YOU folks that like to pew pew need to rethink your logic.
Go to SOLO and pew pew NPC's, OR, form your own group and pew pew each other. There; player interaction, PvP, the game you want and the way you want to play it, with NOONE ducking in and out of YOUR game to make you worry about who gets what how.
FD has given EVERYONE their choice on how THEY want to play their game. VERY SMART.
Seriously, no disrespect intended. I believe this whole subject just needs to go away. From now on I will only reprint my two responses from this thread to this subject. It has gone round and round and round already. If you cannot see the other side of your opinion, there is nothing more to be said.

How can you bounty hunt?

How can you stop people doing missions for the OTHER faction?

In fact, it blows so far over your head that it's probably a waste of time even trying to explain why solo/open swapping is bad.

AS a pvp player, i can kil 30 people, drop to solo and repair/rearm in peace. 4 people wing trying to claim my bounty? LOL solo and now i'm invincible.

If the game didn't have Solo/Group modes, I wouldn't have bought it. If it removes those groups I may well stop playing. That's the game I want to play. I'm fairly certain that there are numerous other players who feel the same way.

Open would remain unchanged regarding myself and players like me, with or without Solo/Group mode. If it wasn't there I still wouldn't be playing Open. They won't see me either way.

It makes no actual difference to Open players that Solo/Group mode is there.

Just because you don't use solo to gank/game the system of people in open doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I'l write it again.

AS a pvp player, i can kil 30 people, drop to solo and repair/rearm in peace. 4 people wing trying to claim my bounty? LOL solo and now i'm invincible.

Two seconds work and you are completely irrelevant, and you can never kill someone who chooses to ignore you. Those people are not even interested in your bounty, they just want to grief you by making sure you can never play with them. Perfectly sensible really :D

I would hope that "open" would not become "PvP' simply because I hope to run into other players from time to time. Otherwise I could not care much less. Also not sure I like sharing resources between all of the modes.

I personally don't live to PvP..and typically avoid it, but I like gambling with chance encounters.:D I am still learning the game but just trading and exploring I have not run into more than a handful of other players (3+ weeks into playing) I've just discovered Community Goals so things will change, I'm certain.

And I'm still not clear on the group option. I was surprised that you only see those in your group. Seems like PvE compared to Open being PvP.

Again, not opposed to being attacked, I just do not want to be stuck with PvP'ers and miss running into the occasional trader or friendly hunter. Plus I love the idea of running a blockade with my cargo! :)

Fine have a solo mode if that's what some players want but please stop it having an effect on the main game, i.e. Open, and yes definitely make community goals open exclusive.
cheers.

so a big screw you to those who bought the game for the mode switching then and you want them to lose their content.... that is about as selfish as if I was to say, sod it just drop the open mode and have private groups and solo only (which if 1 mode had to go would be my choice, however unlike some I DID my homework and understood what I was buying before handing over my cash).

why dont you just go the whole hog and suggest anyone not in open have the game removed from their accounts?

AS a pvp player, i can kil 30 people, drop to solo and repair/rearm in peace. 4 people wing trying to claim my bounty? LOL solo and now i'm invincible.

iirc back in the prelaunch interviews it was said that IF you gain a bounty in open you would be locked into open for a set amount of time before being allowed to mode switch to allow players to get their revenge. This is not implemented (hopefully there is a "yet" at the end of that). Rather than demanding dropping a fully advertised feature of the game that many handed over cash for & which the game launched with, why not instead direct your energy into getting it working properly as advertised.

the bounty rinsing fix in 1.3 may go someway to improving this, maybe there will be other fixes too?

It's so unfair that players can circumvent the whole design of a goal by avoiding blockades and suck like using solo to duck under the radar so to speak.

I could not agree more. Community goals are just that; Community Goals - not solo goals and I see no reason why solo or group play should contribute to / or affect them. But maybe the reason why what I do in my Galaxy affects yours is the same reason why what you do in open affects me and my Galaxy - one galaxy.
-------
I myself choose to play in a group (Mobius) or solo because I don't want the remotest chance of unwanted PvP and I will continue to play like that. I haven't needed multiplayer interaction in any of the computer games I have ever played before and I don't see that changing in the short term. I understand that that might upset some of the open crowd due to one less target but ..... so be it.
------
I also would love for the game to be tweaked so that co-op play is encouraged and griefing / ganking is punished but both of those styles of play are valid and that is the reason I play the way I do.
------
edit - I actually enjoyed multiplayer back in the day when it involved looking over your mates shoulder while he played and visa versa. That was always a great opportunity to read the manual....... back when computer games had manuals :)

We are all part of the same community : ED players.
We have the liberty to choose how we play and we share the same universe which should be influenced by the action of anyone.
The only thing which matter is to have some reflections from one mode in the other modes :
If a system is blockaded in open, then the number of interceptions in solo and group mode should be far more important with same types and level of enemies.
If a great number of cargos try to run the blockade in solo and group mode, it should have more NPC cargos in the system in Open mode.

What's funny is that others actually encourage that to justify them being able to do whatever they like in certain areas. Look at the "Lave is PvP" threads for a prime example.

There are no Blockades in Elite Dangerous. Not in solo mode, not in group mode, not in open mode. That's just wishful thinking for something the game does not, can not and will not supply. You bought the wrong game if you think blockades are/should be part of the game. This is not EVE, forget everything you ever did there, no matter how long or short you played that game, it's NOT relevant. Blockades in space actually don't make sense anyway.

As for the community goals: it'd make sense for those not to exist in an offline mode. It doesn't make sense if they didn't exist in a mandatory online mode. Open and Solo players can both add to the community goal. It simply means the goal is communal, and that both open and solo players add to it. It doesn't imply anything about how the goal is achieved. As far as I care, they throw all self declared "blockaders" into hell-mode for griefing and interfering intended game play.

I would argue the game is richer for having pirates in the lave area and solo players are missing out on a whole aspect of the game by choosing invisibility mode.

I'm sure the traders in solo are gutted to be missing the excitment of having their goods stolen and their ships blown up by pirates!

Yes because so many players want to be interdicted/rammed/sniped on the docking pad and destroyed with no other interaction at all, no comms no nothing, just like Solo... Oh wait, the NPC's do interact more.

I would argue the game is richer for having Mining it it, and those that do not mine 24 hours a day in whatever mode are missing out a whole aspect of the game by choosing pew...pew mode.

.... and you are entitled to that opinion. I would expect that some players do not share that opinion.

In a nutshell, no player is in a position to tell other players how they *should* play the game - we are all told individually to "play the game how you want to".

Yeah, I got that, which is why I found it funny. There are still arguments even among those who want pirates at Lave. But if you want to ignore that then PvP is an area of the game I'm not interested in right now so I'm not actually missing out on anything (apart from annoyances in something I do for fun). I get a few NPC pirates even when I'm "invisible" (maybe you should get the scanners they use because they seem to be able to see me?) and that's enough for my old eyes and PC. Thanks for the concern though but I'm fine all the same.

The problem as I see it with the whole career infrastructure in ED and why it is so important to keep the different modes (and I am not the 1st to say this by any stretch) is that for many traders there is no upside to being ganked by players (sure some will enjoy it)...

But, a Pirate has the potential to gain free loot
a killer gets their jollies for forced destruction in easy 1 sided kills with no challenge
a bounty hunter gets the chance for a spicy dog fight and gets bounty money
All the trader gets is a buttocks splayed pounding, with best case scenario runs away to break even, worst case loses everything.

The theory is, a trader can look at the system information and get a feel for the danger, and know that in lowsec space the chances of getting pounded is relatively high... so they can plan a route accordingly.

However that only works if the police do their thing, which currently they dont. It is all well and good claiming to play the role of a psycho, but right now that role is incredibly 1 sided. No one (or very few people) want to be the bottom of the foodchain and that is where the system protection should come in. So long as I am bottom of that food chain I will ply my trade in mobius and come back to open when i feel like it :)

The ONLY think I lose out on in Mobius is unwanted attention from hughly better specced hardware making my life miserable.

I always play in "open" trading in a T9 and fighting in a Vulure, I like the excitement of open play. When trading, you see another player in supercruise, is it a pirate or a pychopathic killer about to interdict me or just another trader going about his business, that aspect makes the game more alive for me. That is my personal way of playing and enjoying the game, but there are just as many players in "solo" and "group" who like to play their way, I dont have a problem with that and why should I, its their choice.
To me people trying to force players into "open" is mainly about them having more real targets to kill, nothing more!
The same with the players calling for guilds, its all about controlling other players, telling them how to play and where they can and cant go.
That is my humble opinion.

Playing in Open you should expect anything from other players,
since Open is like public multiplayer Server in any other game like Battlefield, Counter-Strike etc. and there you can meet campers, team-killers and ever cheaters (at this moment I do not know how actual is this in Elite...).

Reading all similar threads I have feeling that people are expecting "something" more in Elite from Open mode, I afraid its not possible due nature of people ;)

If you want more "controlled environment":

1) you can join in Group mode, that equals - private server in any other modern game.

2) Play Solo that is basically "classic" single player game.

The best part about solo.

As a pvper:

Gank 20 people, switch to solo to be unkillable and go and repair and rearm.

4 Man wing coming to claim your bounty and uphold peace? Lol switch to solo and come back 30 minutes later

Continue killing player sidewinders and eagles. Any danger, drop to solo.

lol! Game Balance is genius around here
