Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

I'm pretty sure that it is, not counting discounts or sales on the price of the game, we all paid the same price for the same game and all have access to the same modes. (But whatever we paid we all bought the same game.)

First of all, that's simply not true and you're misrepresenting the core discussion.

However I think you may be misunderstanding the different modes. All modes are part of the exact same game with the same game mechanics and the same galaxy, systems, stations and markets. It's just that if you play Open you can encounter a (more or less) random sample of any of the others in Open. If you play Solo you will not see any other players (even though they may in the same place at the same time) and in Group the "pool" of players you may encounter is limited to only those in the same group.

"Improving" Open (whatever that even means) would make the same changes to Solo and Group but may not "improve" them in the same way, if at all, and may even diminish them.

Yeah I know that. I just want to point out the general disgust from Solo players towards threads that talk about changes. Every time they come in and say it should stay this way and that Open is a plagues and all that. I dont get it, are we Open players ever saying anything about Solo?
I'm going to end the discussion here as Robert pointed out FD already have this in their minds and are thinking about it, so there is no point in circling this anymore.

Have a nice flight Commanders !

That's not really the case here. This are game modes, that's like saying in BF Hardcore and Casual should have the exact same rewards, and they don't...But still everyone pays the same for the same game. I don't get it why Solo players don't want the game to be improoved for Open players. I would never mind adding 100 patches for Solo. Good for Solo players!! But let us have our own candy. And as i'm sure you are aware, there are clearly more players in Open. Yes they are not mature and they troll, but they are the ones who bring in the most money...

Back up your figures of more players in open than in solo with facts not opinions. The only people that know that answer are FD and they do not publish them. Many solo and group players do not even come to the forums because of all the carebear type insults thrown their way by the small gods of pvp and childishness.

I would say quite the opposite. Open players don't come on the forums. Usually "childish pvpers" dont use forums and mature discussions like this. But I can assure you that today's gaming community (in general) is more biased towrds PvP and MMO(MOBA or whatever includes pvp and all that...you know it very well I assume).
Do you think those little trolls in Open even know ED has a forum??

Salute Commanders,

Remember, this is an ONLY online game... Not primarily... ONLY. I do believe you are confusing OPEN with ONLINE...
Now also realize that they programmed in TWO, yes TWO other modes for people to AVOID strictly PvP. Solo AND Group. So which mode do you THINK is given priority?
Given these FACTS, I honestly don't comprehend how the thinking that those that play in SOLO or GROUP are needing punished for choosing such modes. I believe that YOU folks that like to pew pew need to rethink your logic.
Go to SOLO and pew pew NPC's, OR, form your own group and pew pew each other. There; player interaction, PvP, the game you want and the way you want to play it, with NOONE ducking in and out of YOUR game to make you worry about who gets what how.
FD has given EVERYONE their choice on how THEY want to play their game. VERY SMART.
Seriously, no disrespect intended. I believe this whole subject just needs to go away. From now on I will only reprint my two responses from this thread to this subject. It has gone round and round and round already. If you cannot see the other side of your opinion, there is nothing more to be said.

Please you must be joking surely. As soon as any thread is started that talks of open PVE or Solo/PVP there is at least as many trolls as well as reasoned players on both sides of the discussion, and many of them come here. But none of them are representative of the true figures of who plays what in ED. As I said FD are the only ones that can give a factual answer to that. So my statement that you were expressing an opinion not quoting facts still stands, so you shouldn't make unfounded statements about numbers in either to bolster your argument.
The only figure I can give you that is factual is the numbers in the Mobius Group which as I am a member of and is published on the start screen under Friends And Private Groups/Groups, and which this morning stands at 6946 members(fact). By tomorrow that will probably be over 7000.
And I want to add a huge thank you to Mobius for making this so successful, I would guess you have to put in a lot of time to ensure the group runs smooth as well as your presence on our own website.

Another fact is that Open is NOT supposed to be strictly PvP and was never designed to be.

I dont see what the problem is, I play in "open" because I like seeing and interacting with real players, but that is my choice, I certainly dont want to thrust "open" onto players that dont want it, you will only drive them away from the game, or penalise those that play in different modes, personally I couldnt care less.
I think the three modes are good, because they cater for all.

sadly yes.... I am a hardcore RolePlayer from GTA and DAYZRP, where the rules are very strict and its very hardcore RP. And i always love to have a little RP interaction, sadly players instantly drop cargo and off...

If only we could all just leave it there right? It's when one mode is seen as easier, or better, or whatever, than another that we get the problems.

Oh I'm RP all the way back to snail-mail PBM, but sadly PvP isn't about RP it's about payers attacking other players. Yes, many players add RP to it (or add PvP to RP), which is awesome, but it's a separate thing.

I'm not saying " Make the solo play rewards lower." I'm saying, add a little more reward for Open players.

The two are one and the same.

The best option for Open I can see is player interaction sith the world. Let us buy stations, or take them by force from other players. Maybe the controller of the station will get a little CR every time a ship does trading there. This would work both in PVE and in PVP, but in Open it will have a little more reward, since we can have SMALL battles over those stations, and a little fun. What i'm saying is, make Open a little more interractive, while this goes for Solo play aswell, in Open it will be more rewarding "fun-wise".

I completely disagree with allowing players to buy stations or take them by force, at least as long as the game is online-only with a shared universe (though I could agree with players building new stations). On the other hand, I agree that open needs to be made enticing by making player interaction more fun and engaging. I'm not saying rewarding, mind, because I don't think extra rewards should ever be used as a lure to draw players into open — that only serves to move to open players that actually have more fun playing solo, reducing their enjoyment of the game in the name of providing more fish in the barrel to be shot at.

I doubt it. The pools about whether players are in open or solo have one big, unsurmountable flaw: sociable players are both more likely to play in open and to participate in the forums. And we don't have the data to correct for that bias.

Only Frontier can tell where most players are, and they aren't telling.

I would say quite the opposite. Open players don't come on the forums. Usually "childish pvpers" dont use forums and mature discussions like this. In about every MMO forum I've been to the PvP population is far more active in the forums than their size would indicate. If you look at WoW's forums you would think most players engage in PvP and organized raiding, whereas the reality is very different. In LotRO, a community manager even explained once how PvPers and raiders are over half the players in the forums while being less than 10% of the actual players.

Besides, arena PvP, like what is found in MOBAs, is completely different from the kind of random PvP you find in open. You can't use the popularity of arena PvP as an indication that players might be interested in the kind of PvP that open has; I, for example, love almost every kind of arena PvP (except, ironically, MOBAs), but can't stand the kind of PvP that open promotes.

Do you think those little trolls in Open even know ED has a forum??

Most players in every game don't participate in the forums, and ED is no exception. But PvPers, and players that otherwise want to play together with others, tend to find the forums far more often than the more lonely types.

There's unfortunately the other side of the coin, where jerks use RP as an excuse for their actions because, as they argue, they are just roleplaying a jerk/sociopath/assassin/whatever. In this forum alone I've seen more than once players defending silent, random and unprovoked attacks under the argument that the attacker is just roleplaying a psychotic killer.

Players can switch groups at will without penalty or change to their character's statistics.

All players have an effect on the background simulation regardless of mode they play in.

Feel free to debate below...

The problem with multiple game modes is players abuse it to gind in solo-mode with low-risks (no chance of PVP interdictions), then they buy high-end ships to compete in open-mode.

The different game-modes also fracture the player base which reduces team-work, player cooperation and PVP.

Such as demand of traders for protection by players escorts is severely reduced, because they simply play in solo or private group.

The only way to reduce this abuse of switching modes is to penalize frequent switching. Everytime you switch from Open to Solo you could pay a fine or have reduced profits.

Give special rewards to players who take more risks by playing in Open Mode.

That's not "the" problem, that's "a" problem. In Open Play you have the advantage of wings, and certain wing-based exploits and 'tricks' that Solo players don't have. Then you have PvE private groups which ban PvP - should they also be "fined" since there's no PvP, even though they're not playing Solo?

If you play alone of course you cannot expect to have the benefits of playing together with others (Wings). Open play has other Wings too which increase the overall risks of players.

Then you have PvE private groups which ban PvP - should they also be "fined" since there's no PvP, even though they're not playing Solo?

The only players who should be fined is those who frequently switch between modes to grind with maximum safety and then switch back to Open Mode like nothing happened and buy the top ships and modules with the credits that they made in the safest solo mode.

No perks to someone's preferred pet mode, it's pointless.

If you play in a more difficult game mode e.g. Open Mode that should come with more benefits (higher risk = higher reward).

If there's no tangible benefit to play in open-mode, only higher risks due to increased chance of PVP, then people will continue to grind in solo-mode or private groups, because that's the safest. They'll switch to Open Mode for fun when they got their top-of-the-line combat ships. That's how people who frequently switch modes abuse it.

Frequent game mode switching without any penalty isn't fair for players who mostly grinded in open-mode, because they took way more risks.

You don't seem to understand the situation. If I log into Open with a certain network setup, it's exactly the same as Solo. I can absolutely guarantee I'll never meet any other player, in any system, and still get whatever % trade bonus or whatever perk that people would like to see in Open mode.

If you play in a more difficult game mode e.g. Open Mode that should come with more benefits (higher risk = higher reward).

Why? It's your choice to play any mode. If you choose Open mode that's your choice, no-one forced you to play it. If you think it's more difficult then play another mode. It's not a competition so who cares?

Yes it is your choice, but frequent switching of modes without any penalty or benefit to stay in a specific mode causes abuse and exploitation as explained earlier.

Again, it's not a competition.

Here's three players.

Player A started playing in January. They played in Open all the time and got to 200 million Cr.
Player B started playing in March. They played in Solo all the time and got to 200 million Cr then switched to Open.

What's the difference between player A & B?

Player C starts today and goes to Open.

What's the difference between players A & B from player C's POV?

Frontier adds extra reward to Open. Player C sets up their Internet to block out other players and grinds to 200 million Cr in "Open" (technically Open, actually Solo). What's the difference now?
