For many people, myself included, being attacked by a player is completely and fundamentally different than being attacked by a NPC, even if the end result is the same.

I just don't get this statement at all. Player or NPC what difference does it make, its still a bloody space pirate/bounty hunter whatever...... Why would you not mind being pirated by a computer generated AI pirate but not want to be pirated by a player pirate in what is afterall a multiplayer environment ?

I've more respect for the solo/pve players that play there for those reasons than the ones who complain about being shot in open tbh.

I get that some people want only positive experiences, I've never played a "bad" role in games but in ED I do because outside of CG pirates who play properly are few and far between.

You need the bad guys so the good guys have someone to hunt.

doesn't count for me because i don't care for the "good" and "bad" in open.
i just care for my own character who lives in a, somehow, predictible world.
strange thing for some people, i know.
but it's the way i want to play (at the moment) and i will defend it.

Possibly, at least in part, because the AI cannot take pleasure from the interaction and cannot relate any particularly embarrassing bits to their friends....

For one thing it's about potential intent and being deliberately, consciously, personally targeted by a sentient being. There are other reasons but they aren't easy to explain.

Can any of the network people out there take a guess if I would ever see Fire70 in open, I live in the UK and him Australia, I would guess the chances are low, just curious.

Without adding them to your friend list or directly winging up....it would be highly unlikely, based on ping.

We have been waiting for Sandro to come back to us on the Vox Populi thread but it hasn't happened.

Yeah, Thats kinda what I was afraid of. The last thing we heard was that Vox Populi thread. It would be nice if he posted #10001 though once the thread is closed...kind of like a Summation of Devs current thoughts feelings etc. :D

I'm 100% behind you. My only beef is CG :)

When I kill a trader I'm actually the exact opposite. I'm not sitting here cackling with maniacal laughter I'm more disappointed because the Trader couldn't do basic math and I have to pay for my rail ammo :)

Sincerely, and without any intent of belittling you, if you have to ask I doubt you would understand. It's something highly subjective, and likely different for everyone that feels the same.

The best I can is to ask you this: if NPCs and players were indistinguishable, would you care if the game suddenly was made single player? If NPCs were as challenging, rewarding, and talkative as players, would you mind if you were guaranteed to never see another player in the game again?

But, noone can really "Know" thats how you feel. We all just have to assume the worst

I get that - I do not expect that all players share your viewpoint though.

Its been a long run, this thread has seen alot of blood, sweat, and tears. Good luck to its successor. Good luck to the devs. Good luck everyone, I hope a resolution is found. See you all in game CMDR!!!

I get your point. Most the pirates I speak to are the same though I think you'll find it's the mindless pkers who would be more likely to be increasing their epeens with each kill though :p

Btw, is it ok to post a piracy video on the forum as long as it has no combat logging or swearing?

This has more to say about what you think about unknown players than what someones real intention is. I do not mean this in a mean spirited way, with the caveat that I am a player who does not enjoy PvP in any other game.

To me, the motivation between an NPC or Player should be considered the same. There are any number of programmed AI's that cover the gambit of motives. Would all it takes to make you completely quit the game would be for an NPC to act with some level attery?

I know there are quite a few around that feel they are being griefed by NPC's..which makes me SMH...so what is the difference between the NPC that kills you in a hauler that is empty and a PC that does the same thing?

Technically it is naming and shaming as, presumably, the target's name is displayed.
