Almost 12 hours later (of an estimated 5 hours) and there's still almost 17GB remaining to download. I've had to kill and restart the client 4 times so far as it keeps just stopping downloading anything (no network traffic at all to/from the exe).

This might take a few days... not every impressed. Especially as every time I update it insists on downloading everything again.

Just discovered it had stopped downloading yet again. It's going to be > 24hrs download time at this rate.

It looks amazing, but it being on rails kind of ruins it for me. It will get old real quick.

Yes. If we have to watch that thing over and over again every time we land then that's a sure-fire way of making me stop playing entirely. I hate cut scenes in games to start with, but something that long to hide a loading screen is dreadful.

OK, it finally finished downloading, and now 10 minutes later I'm pretty much done with it.

It's looks pretty enough, but it's a very small area and there's actually nothing to do currently. Flight model is still horrendously broken, so no fun in the combat arena still.

Bit of a waste of bandwidth to be frank...

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
As of today, not much.

Jenner, you are far too charitable in my opinion - but that's a good thing. My own experience was "As of today, none at all" - it's horrible.

It's like Elder Scrolls Online Beta all over again :( I've got the Fable one to look forward to tonight - and I bet it's exactly the same.

Edit - Fable is worse than that. It's absolute garbage.

It's the same amount of game play that the hanger module had...at first release.

Sounds like you should steer clear of alpha releases (you do realize that this is an alpha release...right?).

It's an interactive cut scene, and all planetary landings will be done that way. Very disappointing to be honest, as it's going to get old VERY quickly having to sit though that. And as it's a hidden loading screen there's no way you can possibly skip it.

No, Chris Roberts has repeatedly stated that landing on planets will be an automatic process. You won't ever be able to fly down to the surface on manual controls.

Calling it an interactive cutscene is ok with me, and I agree that it will likely become boring in the long run, and the fact that you can run around and interact with your ship/cargo/equipment will only mitigate it to some extent. But at the end of the day it is arguably a necessary evil, at least I don't know of any game of comparable scale (or larger), which is completely seamless with no on-rails sequences.

Also I don't really no why you disagreed with me at the end of your post, since you're basically repeating what I said. Ianw asked if the video was a placeholder or if it was the plan for the final game, and I said it was a bit of both. It's a placeholder in the sense that CIG is probably going to improve upon it going forward (the surface of Nyx probably isn't finished, and the exact flight route will probably change as well), but it is also the plan for the final game in the sense that whatever we end up getting it will be an on-rails landing sequence of some sort.

I'm intrigued to know what the game play is in the social module?

There isn't any game play. It's really just like a bigger hangar area to wander aimlessly around in. But it's small so only takes a few minutes to get round the map and although there are buildings to go in, they're all pretty small 1 room affairs with nothing to do in them.

You access it by going into the lift in your hangar, and then when you use the lift you basically have a 2 minute loading screen before you arrive in the lift in the landing zone.

You can "chat" with other players, and trigger some character animations (but it's all a bit uncanny valley as everyone has the same character model so it's all a bit Vault 108, if you know what I mean), but there's no way to interact with anything or anybody other than that right now.

I'm not sure I follow your logic or understand it properly, but Frontier First Encounters and Frontier: Elite II had completely seamless planetary landings.

Thanks for the replies.I'm slightly confused though...

Isn't it a bit like releasing the dogfighting module but you can't shoot anything?

I was just correcting you as you seemed to completely misread what ianw was asking.

What he actually said was:

Well I guess it will keep the auto pilot people happy - to be fair I often use the DC in Elite to be able to do something else but it seems to a shame not be able to fly around that scenery at all.

Is that a placeholder or the plan for the final game?

If you read it, he's actually asking whether the whole "interactive cut scene for landing" thing was just a prototype, or the plan for how things will be (ie. not being able to "fly around the scenery"), and we 100% know that the plan for planetary landings is that they will always be these on-rail interactive cut scenes. In fact, Chris Roberts has re-iterated this multiple times recently to try and manage expectations, because of so many people on the Star Citizen forums were getting carried away.

Well that was interesting for all of 30 minutes.

Also, anyone who has never seen seamless planetary landings should step out of the church of SC and look at Evochron, Elite, Starshatter and a few others.

I really can't get excited about the social module.
Frankly it looks boring now and even when there's things to do, it's not going to be something I haven't been able to do in other games from the looks of it.

The landing on Nyx looked great!
I can't believe it's scripted.. it would be sooo great to be able to land seamlessly.
If they mange that someday I'll be enjoying that a lot.

Bland, Boring, Uninspiring, Small are not words that come to mind when walking around the social module city, for me is the complete oposite: Highly detailed, Inspiring, Huge buildings and fealing alive!

Seeing those other people fooling and jumping around in the social module reminds me of the off putting, immersion destroying character of multiplayer in a game like this.
I hate that and I won't take part in it. Not in SC and not in ED either.
The environment looks very cool though. SC has some great designers.

The Nyx landing zone preview is great. Great detail. Beautiful scenery.
The player has no control whatsoever while landing?
Landing in SC will only be cutscenes?
That is disappointing. But it does look good.
