Didn't one of their devs say they were redoing all the character models in one of their verse shows the other day?

And all the others looked at him like a bunch of actors would look at someone who uttered the actual name of "the scottish play".

Did you not read that enormous monthly report linked by Max earlier :p?

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15187-Monthly-Studio-Report

Ooof that wall of text...I just can't. This is not how you communicate development. I certainly hope this isn't how they communicate development objectives internally.

I just want them to put their developer tasks on a board and let me see it. No having to sift through the wordiness of whatever non-technical person wrote all that....material.

- Joe is working on X ship model. Joe projects his completion to be 1 week away.
- Alice is working Y enemy AI. Alice projects her completion to be 2 days out.
- Alfred is working on Z story line. Alfred expected to be complete today, but change requests have pushed this back. Alfred will provide a new delivery timeline in the next update.

This would be so much easier to digest instead of needing the most motivated fans to parse it for us.

That's what the weekly Around the Verse shows are for.

The community asked for a more in-depth periodic rundown, so they decided to do these Monthly Reports. They've been extremely well received by the backers, who these are targeted for.

Didn't they redo the models for or five times now? Wasn't there a huge issue with eyeballs causing all sorts of problems - insurmountable problems - that they rebuilt for back in 2013?

I get the feeling that the SC evangelists see it as negative trolling when confronted with skepticism.

Yes, I am very skeptical of the project. However, I am very hopeful for its success.

^ this

Just my words, well you said it first however I was thinking it :D

I don't believe there is one readily available - I've tried looking but I don't believe such a thing exists. From what I can gather from what is available, development changes focus on a completely random basis - sometimes apparently by the hour. CIG have had a continual problem with focus "We want this, we can do that, this is how we see things working in the future!" but then simply deliver oodles of stuff about plants, or fish, or mixing drinks, or how guilds will entertain other guilds on their posh carriers. Oh, and ship sales - and outfits, and pretty much every other meaningless add-on they can imagine.

SC has made great progress. We can see that in the latest build. I'm just not sure that the amount of progress that is evident is worth the amount of time and money that has been put into it though.

Hopefully future releases will add more content, fix the bugs, and provide a more substantial game background upon which all the other things they want to add can be attached. It's been their design philosophy from the very beginning, but we just haven't seen that really being applied.

They do look gorgeous though don't they, with absolutely no money on the line I enjoy seeing their artwork and designs, I look forward to reading the reviews after release and seeing whether it's worth playing.

This Marine fiasco, what's with it? Why hasn't it been released? I must be living under a rock, last I remember it was looking good and seemingly ready at the very least for beta?

Having to slog through a long video is not better in my book.

Plus, what you get from each of the devs is a summary report. Meaning, it is what they want to share and is not necessarily highlighting challenges (and triumph over challenges).

Show me the development board they are using. Where each card on the board is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and traceable. A board can tell me in 30 seconds what that wall of text and video try to tell me in a significantly more amount of text and time.

Yes SC do have fabulous graphics, I like a lot of the ship designs like the mining vessels and the large cargo ships. I also like the outfit design a lot, some of the helmets are pretty awesome. I would kill to have some of that in ED! What I don't like is pretty obvious and I do not need to repeat it again.

Yes - I don't think anyone can disagree there - they have some very talented artists. While I disagree with some of the design philosophies and aesthetics - what they are modelling does look very pretty.

This explains it far better than I can. http://www.tentonhammer.com/columns/respawn/oh-well-star-marine-now-canceled

Basically it's cancelled, as it's functionality has been built-in to the rest of the game. However, seeing as they are keen on splitting the game back up, I think that may be reversed at some point.

Seemingly SM was only a test-bed small environment for FPS elements. As they now have everything in the PU they would have put in the SM arena (apart from score boards and a voice over saying "Tuub has been eviscerated by a Fiend!") they decided it wasn't necessary at this point.
They will add in the closed Arena some point further through the development.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
The monthly report did say they are working on the fuel collection mechanics for the game, so that's cool. Give us Starfarer owners something to do. :)

As a bystander, I feel their biggest challenge now is trying to instill credibility into what they are doing, for those who aren't already believers. If the plan is for SQ42 for Xmas 2016 (which CR said he hoped would come to pass in the BBC interview for Click at the weekend), are they going to have an alpha of SQ42?
Or will it be the monthly PU updates will include sequential features necessary to SQ42, using the PU as the rolling testbed?

If the latter is the case, things like "Persistence" maybe need a bit of clarity. No need for credits and purchases to be remembered in a single player campaign, beyond a save point, which hopefully Cry-Engine can manage?

Blimey, those comments are heated. SC has an immensely passionate fanbase, which I would typically say is a good thing but judging by the vulgarities in the comments on that article it may have drifted into 'a bad thing'.

I have no doubts that, should the project be completed, it will be split. They will split whatever they can if it can be sold as a standalone title.

The content side of SM is what is missing in the PU. More than just more weapons, there was a lot talked about with SM around deploy-able items, mines and interactions with the environment such as turning the gravity on and off.

The way I look it is this...basic FPS was implemented in PU, Star Marine is still an outstanding deliverable given the large amount of content that is supposed to go with it that is still missing from the PU.

Oh yes - didn't they apparently have that football game they were so keen on, ready for release in a few weeks yonks ago?

This is my favourite bit though.

nitty gritty: what are we doing right now? What are we improving and why? I hope you find it an interesting read and that you understand why Star Marine isn’t like anything I’ve ever developed!
