Buy Pledge for a ship now so you can name it before all the good ship names are taken!

An excellent argument to avoid SC like the plague.

First, buying jpegs, some for sums high enough to allow buying real-world items of considerable value (Javelin Destroyer: 2,500 bucks!). Now, "pledging"* so that you can reserve ship names.

*"pledge" is a particular pet peeve of mine. It suggests that this is more of a donation, with no fair value in return . . . ironically, this is exactly the case. I mean, seriously? 2.5K for a JPEG?? I can buy a used car for that, or a fancy TV, or 2.5 mortage rates on our house...

Or... about 35 new release games, perhaps?

Capitalism 101: An item is only worth what someone will pay for it.

Sadly there are a lot (as in many more than one might think) of people with more money than sense, across every aspect on earth. SC is just another vehicle for tapping into that particular human 'insecurity'.

Huh… it's almost as if CI±G is a wholly unethical company.

It's almost as if they have discovered databases :D

They really are in a league of their own.

Looks at the list. I see Jango Fett mentioned as being against it, and he is a goon. Thefore all the opposition is just a plot by goons and Derek Smart to undermine CIG. Ipso facto, summa laude, people must be in favour of reserved ship names.

Nice try you Derek alt!

And do you remember the meltdown on here when it was thought ship names in Elite Dangerous would only be visible if a £2 vanity plate had been bought?

Yep, or that . . . or a combination . . . heck, for 2.5K, I can customize a new computer, and a pretty good one, too! (Skizomeoh beat me to the punch on that one. ;) )

Insane. Paying that much money for a ship, one that isn't even in the game yet, is insane. Given SC's progress, it could be years before that destroyer makes it into the game -- if ever. If it doesn't, what happens? Forget refunds, since the sucker, er, BUYER really "pledged," which, in the 'verse of one Mr. Roberts, means that you forfeit any rights you might have thought you had. Caveat emptor!

A stark difference between the two communities - one pushes back, and the other pays willingly and asks for more.

Only one of these communities received a game.

How long do you think a meltdown over SC store items would last on their official forum before being closed, purged, deleted and 10 year bans handed out? A day? A few hours?

Star Citizen backers - without any disrespect to individuals - are in no position to compare CIG selling imaginary items for jpeg ships for a non functional early alpha prototype to a company selling cheap vanity items for a 4 year old multiplatform commercially released game.

Just hand over your money and keep hoping for the best, because that is the absolute best you can do at this point.

Ahah - but at least we get to admire our jpegs whilst watching advanced AI go about their daily lives and visit the most fidelitous hot dog stands that have ever graced gaming.

With the detailed fluid simulation and the sight-based AI task focus, weaponised ketchup is only a few pipelines away.

Very true, but at least the ban would be over before the game (or what remained of it) was out :p

I wish I could find a screenshot of that live-stream where someone flew up to the camera with the "Derek Smart was Right" name plate :)
