The predictions are funny either way - if we're going to share details about Guess the 'Verse and 10 for the Defendant we might as well share the highlights of the Warlord

Would anyone care to guess the FPS on this rig?

Quad Xeon Quads 4Ghz

512Gb RAM

4 X NVME Nytro 1Tb

10GbE

2 x 1080Ti

Twelvety?

CIG predicted we'd land on moons, and be able to leave our ships and walk into bases. DS said it couldnt be done. Which is his default response to anyone trying anything. Nothing to do with 'vilification', the dude simply was wrong.

Not strictly true. He said it can't be done how they're saying they're going to do it. It obviously can be done as games do that kind of thing.

Misrepresentation of his claims by over simplification is quite common.

I vividly remember the pre-emptive gloating on this forum. "Oh they will postpone landings!" "Oh, it will just be a small CE map!" "Oh, I'll prove how much crap it is by trying to drive around a planet and fail!"

I guess its also easy to misrepresent false predictions. :)

"Oh, well, sure you can do all of that, I just meant that it couldn't be done in a specific way!"

Anyway, I'm gonna go grab a bottle of wine, some cheese and watch the simpsons from the bathtub. Completely naked. Pleasant evening everyone!

The "small CE map" was said around the end of 2016, IIRC, so it may very well be that it was the state of the game at that time. After all CIG needed another year to release something (barely) usable.

People made some guesses and predictions but you were talking about what DS said - don't move the goalposts.

Certainly doubling the required memory to almost 16GB so you can shove entire moons into the map wasn't what anyone was expecting. They did indeed fail on any of the clever loading stuff that was promised to make it workable inside the current system requirements.

Hope you have fun :)

Dr Smarts perfectly positioned himself, he's been right just often enough to simultaneously infuriate and terrify the superfans so they have to slavishly follow his every word and attack it. It's obvious that most of the time he's just winding them up, but they can never bring themselves to ignore him just in case.

He's turned being scapegoated and subjected to a hate campaign into a hobby.

The thing with Derek Smart is that, when he talks about the technical side of the game, he is usually right. Whether or not you like his games, the truth is he IS a games developer and he has been doing this for 30 years.

He DOES know what he is talking about and about this aspect of SC, he is usually correct and reliable.

It's also evident by now that he DOES have sources inside CIG feeding him information. That is the simplest explanation for some of what he had stated. Indeed, it's the only explanation for some of it.

At the same time, he does seem to take a degree of pleasure in trolling SCs backers. More, the sources he has appear to be unreliable....sometimes they are right, and sometimes wrong. One wonders if the theory that he is being leaked incorrect information is true; given CIG appears to have deliberately changed the name of a ship simply to discredit him, I wouldn't say it is impossible.

But lets give him credit. He HAS pointed out a lot that is wrong with SC, a lot that is wrong with its development and he has been right about a good many aspects.

Sure..he has been wrong about it shutting down but I don't think ANYONE expected CIG to raise $180 million and counting. At the same time, it seems to me that refund requests are increasing, that even the whales are starting to jump ship, while CIG seems more desperate to raise money, so perhaps the end will come sooner than I expected (my expectation being that they'd lose money but would have enough of a reserve to last 3 or 4 more years, long enough to get something out).

In short....for all the negatives people say about Derek Smart, he can be a valuable enough source - so long as you remember he does have an agenda, that he doesn't have a perfect record and that he isn't above trolling SC backers for the LOLs.

Discuss the game Star Citizen. That is, for the avoidance of doubt, the game known as Star Citizen.

9 FPS. Some people may not believe that, so my mate is going to bring it over later tonight, and I'm going to log the danglies off of it :D

I got as low as 4 FPS the other day... interdicted on the way to Delamar (maybe Daymar - I've no idea why they chose such similar names for their moons), spawned in about 500 pirate ships, FPS hit the canvas quicker than Chris Eubank Jr taking on George Groves, PowerPoint presentation for the next 6 minutes until I quit from sheer boredom.

Should maybe have got me a posse of space bros together before setting out, to teabag the fallen pirates and salute a bit while parading around in their RSI underwear.

I don't know if there is any way to track or log this, but the server exe is on scheduled restarts, it'll get more sluggish over time until its next restart.

I'd love to know how quickly it's eating memory on the server and how quickly its performance degrades, purely out of curiosity.

Well, there's a thought. If Microsoft does another Freelancer and bails CIG out via a management takeover, they could rewrite Star Citizen using PowerPoint and still achieve comparable frame-rates....

And here I am still getting 30 - 45, with it usually hovering around 40 FPS......

And there you may be, but my friend with a decently hefty machine, a core* level router, and a far better connection than mine is in single digits.

* and no joking there. Thing cost more than my car.

If you can be bothered, try popping out one of the 1080's and see if that picks things up. Some of the things I've seen on reddit suggests SC gets confused easily...

Naah - that's already been tried. Besides - he won't let me open up the rig just in case I steal back the Mellanox card and SFP+ I "loaned" him.

Anyway - it's not looking to be too fruitful. Between his settings and my environment - it's going to take too long and prove too much hassle to do anything online, especially after a few beers. We're thinking emulated network Amiga Armour-geddon PVP :D

On topic - has Star Citizen been released yet?

EDIT: I guess Evil_Merlin's post disappeared.

What you consistently fail to understand is that many people pledged for the initial pitch, which was well below the $150 million mark. People wanted that game. People here, who are also backers, wanted that game. The increased scope was a bait an switch for quite a few early backers, of which Derek was one (as well as many more). No one could predict people would throw money at Chris Roberts for promises and deadlines he has not and cannot deliver on. However, despite fools and their fleeting relationships with their wallets, I'd say he's been more right than not.

So, um, is there a game yet? Or is everything still in the future tense?
