The Star Citizen Thread v8

Something I've read on the internet : some citizen was waiting 20-30 mins of loading on HDD

HDD's don't fulfill Genuine Robert's Vision. His marketing partners don't believe in them either.

Buy an SSD. An Intel one.

Now, the real benefits of SSD's aside, have you looked at what GIC really do with the launcher? Something as simple as processmonitor will give you a bit of an insight. Assets are loaded, looked at for a bit, thrown away, and reloaded. It's deliberately wasting time, CPU and IO's.

That's been going on for a while, and nobody has come up with a realistic explanation of exactly why it happens. Even getting the advertised SSD doesn't seem to help - as the same loading and discarding process happens - as far as I have seen on a rig that has one.

I don't have one here myself to test or screenshot at the moment.

Ohhh yeah I tried that night all resolutions and no matter what fps stay more or less the same, the things is that even when I turn on 3xmonitor setup on high res(4480x1080)there is no difference at all.....It´s clearly due the poor CIG netcode.....from last night things improved a bit in stability(no more interdiction-bug)but it´s still slide show mostly 15-20fps........Which is actually damn good as some backers with 1080Ti and 8 core CPU´s report less then 10 frames on average....Yeah one more thing that I finding strange is that when I tried PTU release few days ago sometimes I could connect and have almost 30fps on avg and from some reason thats seems impossible now, either servers are much more occupied and thats making problems or CIG did something to limited even more fps in trade to make a game a bit more stable.......

My PC spec are:
CPU Xeon 4Ghz(OC) 6core/12threads
24 Gb Ram DDR3
SSD Samsung Evo
GTX 970 MSI OC

You know the Team Fusion faced something similar with the netcode for I'll-2 Cliffs of Dover. When they took up the task of trying to fix CloD after it was orphaned you could hardly play on it. But a bit of time later (do not recall just how much) they were able to fly 100+ pilots at any given time. Two different games, yes. But if you've ever played CloD (as I have) or watched a video of it, then you'll know how detailed the game is.

So a handful of dedicated volunteers resurrect a detailed abandoned game, reverse engineer it, and work small miracles in a short time, and SC with more money and man/woman power are bogged down with minimal FPS and poor, no terrible netcode? Simply put WOW!

terrible netcode?

I think it's time, with the approval of the mods, where Netcode is properly described again.

As a networking term - it simply doesn't exist. As a networking protocol - it could simply never work. As a networking implementation - it would immediately find a cosy corner to curl up and die in.

Please peeps - Netcode isn't a thing, and only the scrubs who have never seen an interface or coded for an interaction could wish it into existence :D

Issue is that modern games are so complex that if game is network heavy basically everything becomes part of network code.

I think biggest disquisition can be made on protocol which software uses to communicate between client and server. In case of ED it is protocol which governs peer to peer instances. Along with transferrable logic of NPCs, etc. And so on and so forth.

You can already see that it moves beyond simply shifting network traffic.

There's good reason why no one takes FPS engines to create their MMOs. Because your traffic demands, your performance demands can be so specific that you basically sink incredible amount of money just to get engine working.

I played ED during Christmas shipping refugees in Open, seeing at least 20 - 30 commanders along the way. I always play in Open. My framerate never hit 40 fps, I never felt any slow down or unease of watching game flow. This is network heavy game after 3 years work of endless tweaking and improving protocol it is based on, along with 2 years of development.

I mean, CIG hasn't even hit ED Alpha 1 levels. Watching their tech debt, I always think how on Earth they will be able to finish this game.

Its a flight model most think is terrible, one more suited to a twitch based FPS than a space sim, one which provides no feel or heft, one which promoted "jousting" instead of combat, and which has a turret like and arcade style feel and which deserves to be taken out back and put out of its misery and ours.

But it is still a flight model.

Caveat....I'll not get a chance to test the latest flight model myself until/if CIG hold another free fly event but a lot of people are suggesting the latest tweaks for 3.0 have made it even worse.

Flying a Caterpillar in atmosphere does not feel like a twitch fps game. Definitely had a sense of heft.

I've watched some of it... Graphics are nice but Wow FPS was around 10-12 all the time...
I've heard a few people saying they had 30-40, wonder if that was true...

Framerate was bad with 2.6 but I didn't remember it being so low...What happened how could framerate be so low with 3.0???

Do you mean in general or at Levski?

In general I am frequently up around 30 frames. Levski was pretty bad and have not been back there in a while.

This is of course true, but an accurate description of CIG's kludge of XML, NTP, and custard that it uses to get game data from the servers probably wouldn't get past FDEV's naughty word list.

I suggest we define "netcode" as the result of eating a dodgy mutton vindaloo and washing it down with 8 pints of Stella - that way the conversations still make sense.

"Why can't I walk properly?"
"Too much netcode, mate"

"This motion blur is making me sick"
"It's just the netcode, you'll be fine after a good update"

"What the hell happened in the bathroom?"
"Sorry, I went out with Bob last night and did some netcoding"
"It's up the walls and everything!"
"I'll get the lulzmop."

Not saying that it´s impossible as I could get around 30fps from time to time on some servers but then again it´s more than likely bellow 20fps with dips bellow 10....I don´t know maybe you live somewhere much closer to the server...or maybe you believe you heaving those "higher" fps but you forgot to turn on the frame counter :D

well the stream he linked definately looks like its 40+ FPS as it shows, pretty smooth animations and movement all around.

Go watch this guy who is streaming right now:

https://www.twitch.tv/redlir

he gets similar frames, as do many of the streamers.

I'm not gonna set up streaming just for this. I have better things to do like figuring out Star Citizen keybinds.....

Oh yeah that's true. I was wondering cause every time I saw the game running was around 15fps max...

Still weird to have a big moon landing release and not be able to play on the ground because of crappy framerate...

He has the in game fps counter on. It is in the top right. It is pretty small, so kinda hard to read on stream.

Yep I saw that thats why I said 40+ (as its shown in the top right corner)....I also recently saw a stream with somebody showing 35 FPS but it really was a slideshow so the number alone cannot be trusted

As I said it´s not impossible....I saw also few streams where ppl. heaving decent fps....don´t know if they are all from USA or they might be somewhere close to the servers.....anyway still majority of players experience low fps and also huge number of backers can´t even run the game.......

I've got the nvidia FPS counter on permanently.

I'm not saying I never get terrible fps, down into the 10 range, but most of the time it is around 30. Even 30 is terrible by modern standards, but it at least allows me to have fun playing the "game". If it were 20 or less the whole time I'd never bother.

From what I've seen it was looking nice and fluid on the stream sovapid posted.
