Cons usually happen for things that exist, so yes.
No, my point is simply that CIG would get criticism no matter what they did.
Makes me wonder though, WHY do they suddenly want to spend MORE money than before? They better have some damn awesome announcement to back that up.
Unlikely. I suspect the real reason is that Chris's ego finds it hard to accept the ridicule that he's gotten due to the technical issues that have plagued previous events, and he wants to make sure this one is slick and professional. The biggest costs are likely to be the external company that he's employing to provide the coverage, which *should* ensure things go well (assuming he doesn't try to micromanage it himself, good luck with that).
Because they want the hype back. Look at cyberpunk, dead cells, whatever the new Skyrim is.
SC is nowhere.
But blizzard are good and have big cons!

Because everything they do is at best clunky half baked, at worst pure nonsense cart before the horse.
Anyone who thinks they waste backer money on an event instead of putting them into the game
Because let's face it, one way or the other there is a cost for that event.
- Some backers will complain if the event is removed
- Some will complain they waste money that could go to the game
- Some will complain that they are greedy who demand payment for it (even though there will be no money taken from the game development)

Just one small problem with this.... they still have to show the game, which should provide plenty of lulz moments, unless of course, all they show is pre-rendered stuff and not actual live gameplay. Or, forget it, they can just show off some adverts for new concept ships.

They could very easily squash that argument though by showing how ticket sales + subscriber funds >= cost of convention. Of course, if that equation *doesn't* hold then yeah, they'd deserve all the vitriol they get because all pledges are supposed to go toward development.
What's really bizarre here is that Chris is saying that they have 2x the budget but 3x the attendees, and ticket prices have increased. That means they're bringing in *much* more this year from ticket sales relative to the cost of the convention, so either last year the equation didn't hold (oops!) or this year subscriber funds are too low to be a contributory factor. Either way the community ought to be asking some tough questions here.
I don't remember anyone complaining about all the other streams being free to watch. Let's face it, CIG should have paid people to watch them.
If they've learnt anything it'll be pre-rendered and they won't attempt to do any of those cringeworthy "live" walkthroughs. They'd take a bit of flak for it, but we've seen from the Cyberpunk footage (which appeared to be on rails) that as long as it's well-presented and shows actual, innovative gameplay - and not just mocap cutscenes - it can still be well-received.
This is the final CitizenCon. It's like going supernova.
So Chris has come down from the mountain to let us know he's decided to "take a leaf out of Blizzard's book" has he?... but hey, waiddaminute, aren't Blizzard/Activision one of those big bad publishers Chris was saving PC gaming from?
