The Star Citizen Thread v9

How long ago is it now since Ben Lenslock stated he had played all the SQ42 missions, and Disco Landrover said that "the game is basically complete now"?

If I recall correct I believe that was few years ago maybe somewhere in 2015/16......Hmm....anyway Lenslock is nowhere to find for more then a year....

Something Jones over at SA dug through some transcripts and discovered Chris was the one who actually made that statement during Gamescom interview from 2017:

You can already play those missions from start to finish?

CR
Well so, so YES... we haven't BLOCKED what you... what you... what you would call sort of DESIGNER... somewhere between white and grey boxes and levels we're going to take to a more finished state but we're taking ah, certain ones... we're taking, so for instance we were talking about showing, ah, a sequence last year that was, ah, you know ONE SECTION of the story that we were gunna take to a finished level... and you know we're still basically doing that, we're in production on all of them... um... we, you know... we'll be showing some things at some point... ah, just it's not gunna be at Gamescon and I would hate to make promises because, ah, you know, last year I said, "well we're planning to show, uh, ah, uh... you know... a... a... piece of some Squadron 42 gameplay" and then we ended up not getting it to the point where we were happy with... but we didn't show it and everyone was very UPSET and ah, I felt kinda BAD because, one, we also showed some amazing stuff on the planetary tech... Homestead and all the sort of the next level of what the planetary tech was like and...

... that was actually like, in my mind, really great stuff, but... it was sort of... partly the HIGH of that was... was AFFECTED by the, uh... the fact that we didn't show Squadron 42. But no, you know I mean, I would say it's sort of the ANIMATIONS and the AI because we're going for a level of AI that you don't normally have so we want... ah... you know... when you're on, say... the ship you're serving on, at the beginning of the game it's the STANTON which is an IDRIS CORVETTE, you know all the crew have their full, you know... they have a SCHEDULE, they get up in the morning they EAT BREAKFAST, they go about their JOB, you know they go GET LUNCH, go back to their JOB...

After much detective work I don't think Ben ever said it. I could be wrong but I couldn't find anything. However here is Hobo Lando and that Tyler fella from what used to be INN.

This is maybe the source of the story.

Basically both telling porkies if you ask me. But hey what's new? Go to 17.40 f the link doesn't work.

I was hoping to try the free week, but it clashes with my 10 year anniversary.

My rig probably can't cope with it anyway. Just a lowly GTX 770. Lol

What I really don't understand about SC, is how they actually will make money after it's released?
As far as I can tell, everyone who wants the game, has it... I can't see them making $200~ million (or whatever they've spent now) back in new sales, unless they keep the "buy a ship for $6k" stuff going post release.

This is all assuming it ever gets released. :p

Speaking of which, it's been more than 6 years now, and the Hornet Ghost still has no stealth ability, and there's no "avionics" to speak of (no radar or sensor systems, etc.). Is it somewhere on the timeline, or pushed back to a mythical v4.0 ?

I could tell you, but then I will be banned because telling positive things about SC. You will have to find out yourself.

Well it's nowhere to be seen. Also one of my ships now cannot fly anymore due to its thrusters not working properly. Also trying to change the loadout on my ships lead to complete crashes, or ships showing up without doors or anything.. so yeah, where are the avionics ? How do i activate the stealth running on the Ghost ?

SC is a niche game. PC only, and as you say the vast majority of people who want to play this have already bought it. They would have to go to consoles to make anything, but they would never get past Microsoft or Sony's QA.

Your rig is going to be fine. Generation 7 games like Star Citizen require a fast dual-core CPU with HT and an era-adequate GPU like GTX 580 or Radeon HD 7950 with 3 GB VRAM. It runs best on Windows 7 x64. Framerate is limited by AWS cloud processing power and network bandwidth, though lots of memory and solid storage helps with all the bloatware.

They don't need to make that back, do they? They've already been gifted that money by backers, give or take the actual veracity of the counter.

How they'll make enough money to get from now to release is probably more relevant. The problem with that is, the more people give them, the more the "scope" increases, and the further away release gets, and the more money it'll take to get there. Remember when Roberts claimed they had more than enough money to finish everything, about $130m ago? So why aren't the games finished? Because the scope increased. Why did the scope increase? Because people kept giving them money. It'll never end, at least not in a finished product.

That would mean they would break-even at the end. If CIG wants to have any kind of future (such as keep on developing after 'release') they need to turn a profit, which means sales beyond the cost needing to get to the finish line.

I could tell you

Ok. So why won't you? I mean, it's a simple thing to do if you actually can and don't feel the need to come up with some silly lie just to make a wholly baseless claim and then not stand behind it in any way.

Not only that, but since this is (ostensibly) an MMO, they also have to generate a steady profit post-release irrespective of any development or maintenance costs or the game dies instantly because the servers and bandwidth go up in smoke.

Speaking from personal experiences, I think youre wrong here.

Within my social gaming circle there are more people I know interested in picking up Sq42 (including myself) at release and have invested nothing into CiG than there are people who have already handed over their cash.

The last comment I saw from a CIG employee regarding how they would generate income post release was from Ben Lesnick (developer, master of ships, loser of seats) in an interview with Batgirl.

The plan was to sell the in game currency for real money to "keep the servers running".

This is well over 2 years ago.

That's ok if the game is any good, but what if it's just meh or crap. Are you still going to buy it?
